Hedley has been in private herbal practice for 25 years.

He is a senior lecturer on the BSc herbal medicine course at

Westminster University and has taught herbal medicine for many years

at all levels, from beginners to MSc. is well known for

his ability to communicate complex issues in an accessible and

engaging manner.

is committed to working with people with mental and

emotional problems. To this end he trained with the mental health

charity MIND and worked as a volunteer at one of their day centres

for several years.

This seminar will cover the following topics:

· how the insights brought from traditional knowledge of mental

and emotional problems can be applied to modern practice

· keeping a safe space

· basic counselling techniques

· dreaming techniques

· dealing with psychic issues and maintaining boundaries

· identifying support systems

· when to refer on

· working with psychotherapists

· herbal materia medica & use of flower remedies and other

interventions

· the main classes of orthodox medications including anti-

depressants and anti-psychotics - side effects, withdrawal and

possible interactions with herbal treatment.

Herbalists often find that patients will open up on many levels and

bring issues to the consultation, which they have not raised with

anyone else. What do we do in such circumstances and how can we be of

most use? Sometimes it is just a matter of providing a safe space for

patients to voice their concerns and fears in their own terms.

Sometimes the problems seem overwhelming but there is always

something that the herbalist can do, even in the most serious cases.

Contributions from the floor will be welcome – please bring along any

interesting cases and information on useful resources.
