Urinary tract infections

Does anyone know of any trials/research re the use of herbal medicines

and urinary tract infections? I've looked on PubMed etc but can't find

anything.

I recently went to see a very elderly lady who resides in a care home,

at the request of her daughter. The daughter did not want her mother to

have prophylactic abx for her frequently recurring UTIs so spoke to the

GP before asking me to go and see her. The GP has now said she will not

approve this as there are " no trials/research into drug interactions " .

In the letter I wrote to the GP I confirmed that there were no

interactions with the current medication the lady is taking - I referred

to various texts, including Simon Mills/Kerry Bone book.

Also, do you think it is worth following this up with the GP - not

necessarily to force the issue re medicine for the patient, but to

impress upon her that we do actually know what we are doing!

Having said that, I go on holiday for 2 weeks, so won't have much chance

to do anything until I return.

Incidentally, at the care home, when I was asking the manager(?) whether

staff would be able to dispense teas etc etc., she became quite angry

and referred to it as " covert " medicine! I have to admit I nearly

started laughing!

Yours frustratedly,

Liz
