Guest guest
I have heard of one person for whom a low grade slight strep infection caused these sx. It might be worth trying some Chelidonium and thyme to see if she has clearance, with some anti-inflammatory herbs. This one person had had latent strep for many years, and it did clear and the seepage stopped. Female, no children, pre-menopausal has in the past three years had occasional clear discharge from left nipple. Up to a year ago it was happening two to three days a month but in the past nine months to a year it has become daily. Discharge is spontaneous but if you squeeze the breast in any way it will occur too. This has become quite distressing an embarrassing to the patient. She has had a full hormone profile which has come back within normal range. She was referred to the breast unit and has undergone mammogram and ultrasound. The fluid was checked and does not contain blood. The results from the ultrasound were clear of pathology but came back showing that all the milk ducts were dilated and inflammed. It has been suggested that she has a ductecomy - cutting the direct supply to the nipple for two reasons. Obviously it will stop leakage but more importantly, the consultant stressed that a constant state of inflammation in breast tissue had the possibility of encouraging growth of papillomas which could thereafter become cancerous. It has been explained that when the ducts are cut, the ducts themself then collapse and stop producing any fluid and the inflammation should disappear. My patient is healthy, has a very good diet, had been vegan for the first five months of the year to see if this would help both this and a chronic constipation problem, with no long term change. Is now eating all foods but restricting dairy. Supplements with Vit C and omega three oils. Normally she would not consider the surgery but when the consultant suggested that the chronic inflammation may become a problem in itself is now considering it. She has delayed any surgical intervention until February. Any suggestions? In the past i've used Vitex along with other balancing/lymphatic herbs with success for hyperprolactinaemia but this patients hormone profile suggests this is not the case. Any ideas would be appreciated. Jean
Guest guest
From my experience there is a connection between chronic constipation/sluggishness and breast swelling/tenderness and sore nipples. The reason may be increased FSH and the best way to reduce that in my experience is with Lithospermum officinalis. It is sold as a tincture by lind Blackwell. I have found this to work really fast in most cases although in some patients the symptoms returned after some time although were much milder. It is also really important to detox via the bowel. Liver herbs help with constipation as do all the lubricating bulk laxatives. How about using plenty of linseed and other soft fiber?I am finding Komboucha drink (1 glass twice a day) quite effective for chronic constipation amongst other things. I would concentrate on helping the chronic constipation asap. Congestion tends to have many knock on effects in the whole system. Hope this helps Any suggestions folks. Guest guest
Hi , I find this really interesting. I know the constipation is worrying her. She had a sigmoidoscopy a year and a half ago which was clear. She is very self aware of what makes her bowel worse (wheat, red meat, dairy). She has regulated her bowel for years using pulse and veg fibre which has always worked. Then suddenly it stopped working. She has self treated with bitters, valerian, liquorice, fennel with no effect. Gp gave her laxatives which she doesn't want to become dependent on. She uses them only when all else has failed, usually after about seven to ten days of no movement. She has to take up to four times the normal dose to have an effect. I think there is frustration at the fact that all her normal food methods have failed. She is vata so certainly I would have thought warming herbs, bitters would have helped. She has had three years of stress but this year has been dramatically improved so I think she thought everything would get better. I've never used lithospermum. I'll look it up. Thank you for all thoughts, suggestions. Sent from my iPad From my experience there is a connection between chronic constipation/sluggishness and breast swelling/tenderness and sore nipples. Guest guest
Hello Jean Maybe don't overdo the bitters if she is vata - maybe too drying. More water and oils, linseeds soaked overnight/hempseed oil/aloe/marshmallow root as a cold decoction produces mucilage (one tablespoon soaked overnight) strained/okra (mucilage). 2 x triphala capsules at night. As she is approaching menopause and is vata she may naturally be tending to more dryness which might be why her usual diet isn't doing the job any more. I am wondering about red clover to help remove waste products.....? Hope this is of help Verity
Guest guest
Thank you verity, Linseeds soaked? Do you then just add these to porridge or cereal. Great suggestions. Thank you. Guest guest
Hi Jean Soaking them releases the oils and they become quite gloopy, you then drink the fluid and eat the seeds and make sure patient has an an extra glass of water as well. I don't think it would work in porridge or cereal. Do let us know how you get on. Verity  Thank you verity, Linseeds soaked? Do you then just add these to porridge or cereal. Great suggestions. Thank you.
