Guest guest
What is her resting pulse? Are her extremities hot or cold? Beware of suppressing cough if she is prone to pneumonia. Was the cough present at all before cold? - some beta blockers may cause cough, even cardio-selective ones.MaggieSent from my iPhone Dear herblist, May I tap into the collective wisdo on the following case please. 43 year old woman with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy , hypothyroid and vasovagal syncopy. At the moment I am treating her for a persistent cough (post cold, but she is prone to pneumonia, congestion?) but she has asked for help with stress issues and also the above with a long term veiw of coming off meds. She is on cardicor (betablocker) and thyroxine. So first question I am thinking heart and circulatory tonics Crateagus, Leonorus, borago, convallaria. But not confident about the use of crateagus with a beta-blocker, what is your experience on this please. Second question, she is screaming out for relaxing nervines but I am worried of 'slowing her down' too much and relaxing the heart muscle too much. I have read that antispasmodics are contraindicated with a trophic heart. I am considering melissa and withania at the moment, possibly Scutellaria lat? She is not sleeping well. Guest guest
Hi Maggie, her resting pulse was 58 with a BP of 110/80. Extremeties quite neutral but she does have varicose veins. I gave warming, diffusive lung tonics, inula, angelica archangelica, althea and mucous membrane restoratives hydrastis (only 5 ml) and glyc with euphrasia, poke and a bit of ginger as there was also sinus congestion. I did wonder about the cough being drug related. Also as its worse when she lies down at night I am slightly worried thats it is of a congestive nature, but having said that she experienced immediate relief after only one day on the herbs! At next visit I will do a thorough CV and respiratory examination. I also gave her a tea of sambucus flos, hysoppus, solidago and mentha pip with the instructions to add a teaspoon of Scut lat herb to her nightime cuppa. She slept well. It is the use of relaxing nervines of an antispasmodic nature that I am worried about and had thought of , although having read Mathew Woods account of it today I am not sure of that either now. Also particularly interested to hear whether folks would use Crateagus with beta blockers in this instance. I do have another pt on beta blockers and hawthorn, different scenario, she has beginnings of left heart failure and is doing well on hawthorn. Thanks again -- Carol Burnett
Guest guest
I would build nervine action round Avena, which has a tonic action on the heart and is said to increase a person's 'mental strength'. We were taught that it was a restorative nervine with a stimulant action - thymoleptic and antidepressant.
