Guest guest
Restharrow is wild licorice, Jean: Ononis repens . It's called restharrow cos it gets tangled up in the harrow and the plough. So far as I am aware, it is (or was) mostly used for gout and other rheumatic conditions. Since birch is a bladder herb, I wonder if this is a generalised - if ill-thought-out - detox formula? Whenever someone comes to me on a regular dose of senna, I work towards getting them off it. It's a first principle for me. Problem is that if someone is on an irritant laxative for many years, they may already be dependent on it with an a-tonic bowel. I have no idea where you might get restharrow from, though. Sorry. Cristina i have a patient who has been using a senna supplement for years. It contains senna, birch and rest harrow. Can anyone tell me what the rest harrow is and what its used for medicinally. Also can it be supplied. obviously this product is now being discontinued so I am attempting to replicate it for her since she has great faith in it. The senna and birch I have but not the rest harrow. Jean
Guest guest
Hi Mrs Grieve says a little about Rest Harrow (see www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/r/restha11.html) It seems to have been used for “stone in the bladder” and in fact Alfred Vogel compounded Birch and Rest Harrow with Goldenrod for bladder problems. But maybe the thick juice extracted from the Rest Harrow root could act as a bulk laxative? I wonder if you could replicate the effects with Psyllium or Flax seed? All the best, Jan i have a patient who has been using a senna supplement for years. It contains senna, birch and rest harrow. Ononis sp.: http://www.henriettesherbal.com/plants/ononis/spinosa.html I've seen it grow on the sandy shores of Wales, near Swansea :-) - it's pretty small, and pretty pretty. Guest guest
Hi Jean Ononis spinosa (spiny rest harrow) was a favourite herb of Geoff who used to teach at Balham. Favourite as in " testing students to see just how much they know " , not in using it. If patient didn't turn up, you'd have materia medica quiz. It's diuretic, but also laxative. Used for stones, gravel, UTIs and also for gout. You set me off curious to find it mentioned somewhere. Culpeper and my old 1975 edition of Potters Cyclopedia both have it in, along with a couple of minor books (e.g. 's Traditional Folk Remedies. Potters says it was popular remedy for dropsy in France. And mentions Parkinson - if you happen to have a copy..... Parkinson says boil roots.... in Canary wine.... stone pot... " and so set to boyle in a Balneo Marie for 24 hours is as daintie a medicine for tender stomachs as any the daintiest Lady in the land can desire to take..... " Also says it is " commended against a stinking breath " and takes a way the smell of wine in those who have drunk too much. Which suggests action on digestive tract/liver - and therefore laxative? Potters also says jaundice and rheumatism. And externally for ulcers, hydrocele and enlarged glands. n Barker might be able to tell you more - he usually knows the less frequently used herbs pretty well. best wishes > > i have a patient who has been using a senna supplement for years. Guest guest
It grows round here in poor pasture, and if I recall correctly it degrades the pasture because it is parasitic on the grass, and farmers do tend to try and eradicate it. It's also quite s robust plant, hence the name, and slows harrowing. Sally > Hi Jean > > Ononis spinosa (spiny rest harrow) was a favourite herb of Geoff > who used to teach at Balham. Guest guest
Hi all thank you all so much for the invaluable information on rest harrow - it is hugely appreciated. What a wonderful resource we have here!!! I agree Cristina - I find constant use of laxative extremely destructive and would always aim to change this practice with any patient. This lady is 80 years of age and has been using this product for about twenty years. I have been working with her for a year and she responds extremely well to herbal medicine and indeed the bowel habits have improved dramatically on her herbal prescription. She is just " stuck " on the fact that she has always taken it - even although when she started seeing me it was because she was constipated. I wonder what the ethics would be of making a " placebo " capsule of different herbs!!! Jean Re: rest harrow Restharrow is wild licorice, Jean: Ononis repens . Guest guest
A long time ago Phyto used to offer this as a tincture, but I don't know whether they still do Tel 0 or www.phyto.co.ukTo: ukherbal-list From: jeanrdow@...Date: Tue, 13 Dec 2011 05:03:23 -0500Subject: Re: rest harrow Hi all thank you all so much for the invaluable information on rest harrow - it is hugely appreciated.
