There is a beautiful bird park called Kakatou or similar, will look it up if I

have time, where there are divine birdsongs to be heard, not herbal but lovely

anyway. MArilena.

Hello all

Not wishing to rub it in on a snowy day here in Sussex but I am off to Australia

on Sunday (hopefully). Wine tastings and cricket are organised but would welcome

any suggestions on anything I should see/ do to satisfy the herbal side of me. I

shall be visiting Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. I am going to the Mungo

National park but other suggestions would be appreciated. Also is it possible to

buy Kava kava there?

It is going to be the trip of a lifetime and really want to make the most of it.

Thanks

Permaculture started in Oz - I think there must be some inspirational

sites there, try googling it?

Lucky you I had a trip in 2003 (for the rugby!). I tried to find out about

plant medicine but much knowledge was lost as the settlers did not creat the

aboridgines with any knowledge. I did buy one book called Australian Medicinal

Plants EV Lassak & T McCarthy.

If you have time in Perth going South is the best place to see wild flowers but

maybe a little late now (my nephew is there at the moment and its over 30 but

not humid). Sydney - the Blue Mountains to see the haze from the volatile oils

and smell them. Melbourne not sure about plants but a trip to see the pengiuns

would fun.

Hello

Have fun, I would stick with more wine tasting, to be honest there is not much

Herbal stuff to do here ( I live in Queensland) . Most of the Herbs we use are

exactly the same as are available in the UK , actually less choice and much more

expensive! Most people are naturopaths here and very into supplements. I am sure

there is traditional herbal knowledge still around some where, but I have not

found it easy to find. The only form I have found Kava Kava in is in tablets

from Mediherb.

Fingers crossed for the weather

Hi

Have never thought of herb tours for visitors to Australia - and if I

was going anywhere for that, it would be Tasmania. They really do

have some amazing herbs/herb farms.

For other herb gardens - check out those at the Botanical Gardens of

all the major cities, particularly Melbourne and Sydney. Also in

Melbourne go and check out the kitchen garden at Heidi Art Gallery

If you have a couple of days in Sydney, drive out to Hill End (quite

a ways on dirt road) it is a fantastic old gold-mining town, now

almost deserted, with some amazing hawthorn trees and a few

interesting herbal artefacts in the museum. You would probably need

to stay overnight from Sydney, or it would be a very long day.

In South Australia, Jurlique, the herbal/bd/upmarket skincare

company, do tours of their farm which is in the Adelaide hills and

would be lovely to see - you need to book through their website.

Yes you can get kava - only water-based extracts, which are available

in tablet form

Kakadu is a wonderful national park, with amazing birds, but it is in

the Northern Territory, (relatively) close to Darwin, around 3000k

from Adelaide. That is days to drive.

And of course there is the fantastic, extensive herb gardens here at

Southern Cross University in Lismore, northern NSW. But that is

around 12 hours by road north from Sydney, 2.5 hours south of

Brisbane, so not on your itinerary.

enjoy the cricket. And the wine. And the rain over so many parts of

the country after sometimes a decade of drought means that the

wildlife and birds are quite spectacular.

best wishes

Sue
