If I were you I would get heel spurs ruled out and see a podiatrist to rule

anything else out. Whether or not TC causes foot pain directly I don't know,

but I suspect it could, depending what nerves are being affected. I do think

that when you have TC everything else gets compromised and other problems show

up (eg due to leg length difference, tight legs and calfs, drop foot, improper

gait, back pain, etc). I remember having terrible foot pain in my late 20's for

no real obvious reason. I was given orthodics and with diligent use the pain

did go away. However, to this day I am only able to wear birkenstocks and

orthodics in my runners to feel truly comfortable but have never experienced

that terrible foot pain again. I do wonder if TC could have played a role in my

pain however as the pain was pretty severe for such a young fit person that I

was back then, so I would be curious to hear what others have to say about this

issue.

Your toes being like claws sounds like TC -- I think Nina in this group has had

this symptom?

Can anyone elaborate on heel pain and tethered cord? Do you

need to get heel spurs ruled out as the cause of heel pain, to know if this pain

is associated with a tight cord?

My NSG doesn't recognize this as a symptom of a tight cord and is telling me to

do calf stretches.

Do I need to go get x-rays to rule this in or out? What have others done? My

toes are also like claws and I have had pain in the soles of my feet for about

15 years now.

The heel pain is fairly new.

Thanks,

Pam

Hi Dee

Yes I do have clawed toes, mostly on the left foot which was most affected

by the tethering when I was young, but also on the right foot which

deteriorated as I got older. The clawing didn't improve after my

detethering, cos the bones were set in their deformed position from an

early age.

The clawing is combined with the high arches on both sides, previously

lengthened achilles tendons, and weak thigh muscles, which means my left

foot always falls out to the left and gets extremely tired extremely

quickly. My left foot is always painful, whatever I am doing and I get

annoyed that it is just one joint in my body which lets me down (the ankle

joint) if I try to run or walk a long way.

The clawing of the toes is due to the tension on the L5 and S1 nerves,

which enervate the lower legs and feet, due to the tethering between L5-S2.

S1 is for the outer edge of the foot and the 4th and 5th toes and that's

why the clawing is so bad there. The L5 nerve is for the inner lower leg

and 1-3 toes, and that's why my feet have hammer big toes, and the left big

toe has no power of its own! In fact my footprint looks very odd - I giggle

when I think of people seeing it in the sand and wondering what walked by!!

TC - why did we have to end up with it, eh!
