im not sure why slippery elm would be contra indicated in pregnancy but there was the problem of slippery elm bark sticks being used to induce abortion which is why it is only sold as powder these days.

Pregnancy

Dear ListI have a px coming on Thursday who is just pregnant with her second child (my first pregnant px). She had hyperemesis gravidarum throughout the first pregnancy (thanks for all the posts in the List archives re n & v!). Also has acid reflux of longstanding and a suspected anal fissure.I was wondering about giving her psyllium husks re the latter. I notice Stannard posting to say slippery elm is contraindicated in pregnancy. An internet trawl is ambivalent about psyllium husks in pregnancy - most sites say it's probably safe but not tested.Do you have any experience of this? Ideas welcome for this px who I haven't met but whose mum was a px of mine for gall bladder issues.thanks Katharine (Locke)

Ulmus fulva used be proscribed herb for us because 'quills' used be used for abortions, like knitting needles. I know of no reason Ulmus pwd be contraindicated in pregnancy. On contrary cld be v. Safe tmt for constipation depending on the etiology . Robbins
