Any general advise would be a appreciated on what in your experience for lets say for a cardiac bed what would grow well together, or defiantly don't grow....... Wondering if anyone has grown licorice successfully? and were would be a good sourse to get some root stocks? Also has any one had any luck growing Vitex or Black cohosh? Thank you for your time. Guest guest
If this is a charity or community project, yes, Rutland would be happy to let you have a few growing liquorice plants. Ours seem quite hardy (survived last winter anyway) and although they quite disappear over winter, they come back a bit bigger each year. Traditionally harvest is by digging around the roots, taking the periphery and leaving the centre of the plant alive and in tact. But they take sooo...ooo long to produce any size. We have a few Black Cohosh growing quite well in forest conditions (shaded from direct sun). Again terribly slow. Vitex we don't do and leave that up to friends in southern France and even hotter places. I do recall a 'vine' of Vitex grown in a greenhouse at Bodle Street in Sussex and it had knocked to roof out and grown through it. Hope that helps, > > > Hi > Ive under taken a massive herb garden project and would appreciate some > advise. Guest guest
I have liquorice, vitex and black cohosh all growing here for about 8-9 years in Norfolk - no protection. I got vitex and black cohosh from the Poyntzfield nursery in Scotland as plants http://poyntzfieldherbs.co.uk/ and started liquorice as seed (can't remember where but not difficult to find). My vitex is about 4 foot tall shrub, and flowers every year but no fruit. Leonorus would be nice for your cardiac bed but give her space as mine gets to 7 foot easily and makes babies every year; you could also get some convallaria bulbs... best wishes On Mon, May 16, 2011 at 9:47 AM, juliaherbalist <julia@... > wrote: > > > Hi > Ive under taken a massive herb garden project and would appreciate some > advise. Guest guest
Dear ,I've been growing licorice and vitex in flower pots for years - however, this winter may have finished vitex - on the other hand it often does not show the signs of life till June. I remember vitex bush growing outside at Bodle Green and flowering beautifully. For cardiac bed I would recommend Leonorus and convalaria - both dead easy to grow and spread nicely (but not rampant), and look so lovely. Also broom as a focal point is good.Hope it helps > > > Hi > Ive under taken a massive herb garden project and would appreciate some > advise. Guest guest
Hi just to add to what & say really. Poyntzfield is great and where we sourced our original plant stock from for our herb farm. We are just trying to germinate our liquorice from seed, but got vitex and black cohosh plants. The trees are out in the field and we are seeing how they grow this year. They will not produce fruit unless you perhaps try them in a polytunnel. But alot of what is in the fruits will go to the leaves instead if not fruit is produced. I have this on good authority from a herbalist who has grown and done just that with vitex in clinical practice. I may even get some liquorice plants from pontefract, who have some from the original liquorice growers plant stock from years ago when we had that industry. Lends a little romance to your project. we are planting our black cohosh in the woodlands beneath an oak tree, got that advice from the great Winston at Herb Fest last year. Best wishes all Jacqui > > Hi > Ive under taken a massive herb garden project and would appreciate some advise. Guest guest
Quite an undertaking! I have been working a similar scheme for a local non-profit- educational garden mostly. I have a cardiac/circulation section that also includes Dan shen- Salvia miltorrhiza- a beauty and easy to grow from seed (Horizon Herbs here in the states). Crataegus and Vib op- nicely pruned ones, rose- all full sun. Achillea, rosemary (in a pot). You could probably grow cayenne pepper too?? What I found difficult was to pigeon-hole plants into one system - I'm thinking maybe of a constitutional garden vs. body systems may be more appropriate.Good luck! To: ukherbal-list From: julia@...
