Guest guest
If you have bronchiectasis: Lie on the side of your bed with your arms and head hanging over, so you can read a book that is on the floor. Take deep breaths and cough, you will probably bring up lots of mucous. That is one of the things you can do. Unfortunately, coughing IS brochiectasis and something that may be eased but will never go away. Are you seeing a pulmonary doctor? Guest guest
Hi Di ... welcome to our group. Using lozenges may help ease your coughing .. drinking lots of water (but not really cold water) is a big help for me. I have it with me all the time, even in church. Learning to relax as much as you can is a help too, at least it is for me. As far as explaining what we have, I tell most people that I have a lung condition, most are satisfied with that explanation. For others who really want to know more I explain what Bronchiectasis is ... the bronchial tubes become stretched out due to multiple infections or due to heredity and therefore, whatever I can inhale can lodge in my lungs and set up infection. I tell them that because of this I am prone to get infections easier than most 'normal' people. Looking up information on the internet is a good way to learn more, as is being in this group with people who have dealt with this far longer than I have. Hope this helps, stay encouraged! Louise Hopeful Hello, I have just joined the group and I am felling bad after reading some of the emails. Iv'e been felling sorry for myself and thought that maybe I'd let my cough get away from me without helping myself too much. It appears that I don't have a lot of control over my fate after all. I felt alone like many others but now understand how wide spread this disorder is. People are kind to me and say I should fix up of my cough, but I get the impression that most times they are worried that I may pass it on. I work in a classroom and try not to let it interfere with daily tasks. What I'd like to know is how can I ease the cough? How can I help myself improve? How can I perhaps help educate others? I am isolated, on a farm in a small rural town.Ever hopeful, Dianne
Guest guest
Dear Dianne, I read your email and it touched me and I'm sure lots of us. I'm really pretty new to the group and still going through a lot of tests for the bronchiectasis treatment. When I read the emails at first it was scarey but comforting to know there's many of us in the same boat! You really need to try and find a pulmonary specialist even if you have to travel a bit to see one. A general Dr probably won't have the background to treat you properly. Is there a larger city near you? Guest guest
Hi Diane and welcome, You need to educate other people that coughing is a "good" sign, as it is clearig your lungs. It is a chronic condition and not contagious. When I worked, I didn't like to cough in the office too much, as it always attracted comments. I would go to the ladies room and have a few big coughs, whenever I felt congested, and this prevented a lot of annnoying coughing in between. It's not the ideal thing to do, but it did help to get me through the day. Take care and keep well. Love Bunny (Sydney, Aust)
