HI and welcome to this group there is a wealth of information here for

those who want to learn and I also belong to another group and they don't want

protein and they want to use Tums instead of calcium citrate and I could say

more but this sis not what you asked for anyway I want to be healthy so I get my

health stuff here from my Mom and sisters and brothers

Introduction - Long

Hi All,

I was reading Tina's " GOOD NEWS " email and thought it was time I wrote.

First.......Congrats Tina! We have the same doctor. I'm having WLS on March

29th at Torrance Memorial Hospital in California with Dr. Owens. He sure gets

around. I like him, too!

A little about myself. I am 47 yrs. old. Have one daughter and two beautiful

granddaughters 2 and 3 yrs. old. I'm 5'3 " at 270 lbs. BMI 47. I went to my

doctor concerned about sleep and breathing problems, bad knees and back. I have

rheumatoid arthritis, but for the most part it is in remission right now. My

doctor wanted me to start yet ANOTHER diet. She works her butt off everyday

exercising. I told her I was 47 yrs. old and have dieted most of my life

and...............I'm still fat. I told her I was scared about poor health and

she suggested WLS. I was so surprised. She wasn't a 100% on it, but she said

she would start the process since it takes so long and I could research the

surgery in the meantime. Next thing I know I have a date with the surgeon.

Filled out my paperwork and was approved the same day it was submitted to my

IPA. It really threw me for a loop. I just sat there and cried. Mixed

emotions of fear and happiness.

I feel so bad when I hear of those who have been fighting the insurance

companies and their GP's for the right to have this (for many) life saving

surgery. I was prepared for a fight, but there was no one to fight with.

Please don't give up. It's your life. I've read where the only way someone got

approved was after hiring a lawyer. I know everyone can't afford that, but

thank God for this group of supportive and knowledgeable members. There is a

wealth of information here and on the net. I should mention that I have since

found out that my doctor has a contract with my IPA and that just about everyone

who uses him and has Blue Cross of California gets approved. If anyone wants

more info you can check him out at www.obesityhelp.com or feel free to write to

me at cinlyn1@... if I can be of any help.

This is the best part.................while I was reading about Dr. Owens on

obesityhelp.com I found a post from a dear friend that I had lost touch with. I

wrote her and found out she was also waiting for approval from her insurance co.

Her GP would not recommend her and she had already been turned down once. We

were more than excited to reconnect! When we told our story to Dr. Owens office

staff they suggested we try and schedule our surgery on the same date. Long

story, short, it happened, we are both scheduled on the same day, one after the

other and we are going to try and room together.

The hard part is telling my friends and work. My best friend is freaking out

and says I will die of malnutrition. My work knows I'm taking off for major

surgery, but assumes it's because of female problems and is very concerned about

me. Told me to take off as much time as I need. I intend to explain to my

boss, but she works in another facility and I want to tell her in person but I

haven't had a chance yet. I have a feeling she will not be thrilled to cover

for me at my office for " elective " surgery. I'm a nervous wreck over telling

her and trying to explain why this isn't just " elective " surgery.

Anyway.......thanks for listening! I am so impressed with this group of

loving, supportive people. I've learned so much here!

Thank You Everyone!

Hi ,

Thank you for the " Welcome " . I understand what you are saying. I belong to

three email groups and have listened closely. This group has given me the most

information, although the others arn't bad, just not as active.

My doctor will have me on fluids for the first 4 weeks. I will buy the protein

drinks from him for that time period. After that I will be checking out the

samples from, I believe it is " vitalady " :)

Hi Ava Lee,

Thank you for the warm welcome and for sending all that information. I'm an

information junkie, lol! I really appreciate words of wisdom from those who

have gone before me. ly, I don't know what I would do without this group

to gleem from. I have been so amazed at the consistently supportive people

here.

I was so stunned when I got accepted so fast that I couldn't really talk to

anyone. Think I have come back down to earth now.

I hope you are feeling better real soon!!!

Dear ,

I didnt respond to your question because I dont have an answer.. If you

have stopped losing weight, I suggest that you might want to call your doctor

and get his/ her opinion on what needs to be done to determine why your

weight loss has stopped..

Take care.. let us know

You are more than welcome girl I am always happy to help out . That is a great

idea to find out what they are and post back here !

Re: Introduction - Long

Yes Hon it is vitalady at www.vitalady.com and be sure to try her sugar free

syrups too I really like the cookie dough and the chocolate Macadamia nut .

this group has been wonderful to me from day one . I would also think it would

be good to get your samples now reason being if your protein level is up that

means better healing after surgery .

Good luck and keep us posted . When did you say your surgery is ? You will

need an angel when it gets closer to time !

Re: Introduction - Long

Hi ,

Thank you for the " Welcome " ! I spent a month in Brunswick, GA many years ago.

1988 to be exact. We met so many warm, friendly people there :) Are you near

that area? I was wondering if you had a website where you have talked about

your revisions. I don't expect you to repeat information you have probably

shared here already, but I am curious as to what you have been through.

I have been on egroups before for other subjects like crocheting. I have been

on this list for about 2 weeks, but wasn't sure if I should post. My experience

has been that people fight all the time and I didn't want to get involved just

to leave a few days later. I truely feel I can speak freely here and it amazes

me. I'm not saying that people should always agree, I know I have learned from

people I didn't agree with at first. BUT, I have seen some pretty ugly flame

wars.

Thank you again!!! So glad I joined this group :)

in California :)

Surgery date: 03/29/02

Dear ,

I want to welcome you too.. I have been in Washington state for several

weeks and flew home about the time you joined the group.. home being GA..

Anyways, I am beginning to return to Eastern time and be more alert and

aware of what I am reading these days.. so welcome..Ask questions, seek

opinions on whatever is on your mind, share your feelings, just feel a part.

1) Why doesn't anyone ever answer my questions?

Did I miss something? I am pre-surgery, so if it was something post..... I

don't know.... YET.

2) Has anyone ever lost just 50 lbs and quit loosing? I am 262 lbs and

having

a hard time dropping more.

I have heard it said several times to go back to the beginning again. what you

did in the beginning that worked. If your on a plateau, I have heard others

say they were on a plateau for 6 weeks or so. Increase exercise.

Sounds like you're on a plateau. Have you been drinking protein? How about

water? Seems that if you up your intake of these it helps break the plateau.

No milk or sugars... right? And watch your intake of carbs (pasta, rice,

etc.), 'cause those will sneak up on ya fur sure.

JULIE--We don't mostly have trouble getting questions answered here,

hon... I usually suggest that gals look in our file section first; we

have tons of good info there! Then, if they still have questions, ask

one or two questions at most per post; more are apt to be

overwhelming and some folks won't have time for a long answer and

will just skip the whole thing. It DOES help if you develop a

personal relationship with some of the gals on the board (I know I

can always ask Vic///Theresa etc. and they HAVE to answer

me on pain of a beating! LOL!) And, of course, how we approach folks

makes a difference in their response too...

We DO try to be there for everyone, but it's not always possible.

That's when we turn on our understanding, forgiving nature and

promise to bake somebody something (SF of course!) If you have a

really important issue, put 'really important' in your subject line--

stand up and scream in other words--and that should help!

Tracey, Well I will apologize for not answering your questions sometimes

with all

the new members and questions, some gets lost, but please don't take it

personally.

As for the losing weight thing, well hon you have to remember that your body

is healing

and in the beginning you will drop quicker than later on. I know I am

there, I have only lost

2 lbs in a month and its very heart breaking but that's when you work harder

and up your

water, protein, exercise and don't worry so much, one way or another the

weight will

come off, its slowing down, and then boom as fast as it slowed down it will

start back

up again. And then it will happen all over again. But please remember this

wasn't a

quick fix weight loss we still have to work hard. As someone said, watch

your carbs,

sugars, and milk. Those are big weight stoppers.

Again I am sorry I didn't answer sooner.

Hugs.

Love,

Theresa

Re: Re: Introduction - Long

I just have one question, ok, maybe 2

1) Why doesn't anyone ever answer my questions?

2) Has anyone ever lost just 50 lbs and quit loosing? I am 262 lbs and

having

a hard time dropping more.

:) Are you near that area? I was wondering if you had a website where you

have talked about your revisions. I don't expect you to repeat information

you have probably shared here already, but I am curious as to what you have

been through.

My experience has been that people fight all the time and I didn't want to

get involved just to leave a few days later. I truely feel I can speak

freely here and it amazes me. I'm not saying that people should always

agree, I know I have learned from people I didn't agree with at first. BUT,

I have seen some pretty ugly flame wars.

Hi .......

I appologize for being touchy this afternoon. I did go and weigh myself

this

afternoon and i weighed the same as i did on Feb 19th, 266 lbs. I ran into

the

surgeron who did my surgery and he asked how i was doing. So i told him.

He asked me when i weighed myself last and i said Feb 19th. He said don't

worry, and that it's no big deal. He said not to weigh myself except for

once

a month. He mentioned something about muscle being the reason i didn't

loose.

I guess i am just used to loosing my 3-6 lbs a week, is all. I'll just keep

plugging away and drinking as much water as i can.

Thanks again.....

Tracey
