I'd like to add my $.02 to the Methadone discussion. Btw, first post to this

group...I'm an intermittent lurker ;-)

Unfortunately, I'm very sensitive to most medications and suffer with some very

bad reactions to many of them. As a result, I've taken just about every pain

med on the market. Methadone included.

Methadone did not induce weight gain. No elevated withdrawal symptoms. No hot

flashes, etc.. Just the usuals...constipation, etc.. So don't let all the

horror stories scare you.

I took the liquid form as it was the easiest way to monitor the initial dosages

and less harsh on my stomach.

Btw, I agree with the poster who was dismayed by the medical community's

reluctance to prescribe methadone for pain. It's very inexpensive, long-acting

and, IMHO, should be tried long before going to the oxy's, etc..

But, that's just my opinion. I'm a " pain patient " what'll I know. lol

What do you mean " the methadone we use now is synthetic " ? Methadone *is*

a synthetic; there is no other kind. It was discovered by the Germans

shortly before WW2. The story has it they were looking for an

alternative to morphine to replace opium supplies, although this is

somewhat controversial.

Generics are supposed to be of the same dosage of the primary

medication according to the FDA however, many times they are not. They

allow a tolerance range with generics and add to that the fillers.

Oftentimes they are not as effective as the name brand and vary by the

manufacturer as well and on a real rare occasion sometimes the generic

form can be more effective than the name brand. I always try to pay

attention to the generics, especially when it comes to Pain meds

because I too have seen a difference in even something simple as

Vicodin.

Constipation is such a troubling problem with nearly all narcotics. I

try to keep my fiber at least 20 - 30mg and lots of water but

sometimes that doesn't even work. I guess that's a small price to pay

to have some pain relief :)

Hi,

I have been on methadone for a few years, to help

with the chronic pain that I suffer from an accident

at work. I fell, and ended up with disks in my neck

pressing on my spine. This causes pain from head to

toe. I was told that methadone is a generic drug.

Methadose is made by a different company. I can't

stand methadose, as it doesn't hold me as long, and I

need a much higher dose, if I have to take methadose.

I am also very sensitive to the liquid methadose. My

blood pressure shot through the roof, when they

changed me to liquid. I take 200mg methadone daily. I

need 220mg to be confortable, but thats another story.

The really irritating part, is I am sure that the

above facts are true. Yet any expert will tell you

that the above statements are impossible. At least

thats what the nurses always say. They act like I am

the only person that has ever said that methadose aint

as good. Or that liquid caused a reaction.

Hi I was wondering if anyone has been prescribed this for chronic pain. My Dr.

just put me on it yesterday and I'm a little concerned with the information I

have read about it. I would love to hear anyones experience with this. Thanks.
