Please see below details of NIMH PTB seminar to be held on 5th November

presented by the herbalists from Whipps Cross Dematology unit.

Know Your Skin

- developing a herbal toolkit in dermatology

Led by

Laird MNIMH, MCPP, Beatriz Linhares MNIMH MRCHM and Krishna Ramamurthy

MCPP from their experience at Whipps Cross University Hospital, East London.

With guest speaker Dr Shefali Rajpopat, Consultant Dermatologist, Whipps Cross

University Hospital.

This seminar will provide a wealth of information on how to treat skin

conditions from three practitioners' perspectives. Dr Rajpopat will talk about

the latest understanding of the skin, including autoimmunity, inflammation and

infection. We will look at what factors affect it and how to break the cycle of

disease, along with the important role played by food and nutritional

deficiencies.

The seminar will cover conditions including alopecia, acne, rosacea, eczema,

psoriasis, urticaria, alopecia and vitiligo. Case histories and slides will be

included.

Learning from each other is vital to our work as herbalists, so there will also

be an opportunity to share our clinical experience in smaller groups and

feedback to the whole group.

The Presenters of the Programme

Laird DipPhyt MNIMH MCPP

has been a practising medical herbalist since 1999. She set up the first

herbal clinic in a hospital dermatology department at Whipps Cross University

Hospital, where she is tutor-practitioner to BSc Herbal students. She also

practises at The Haven, the breast cancer support centre in London, and has a

private clinic in Fulham. is a visiting lecturer at several universities

for herbal and medical students. She was a TV producer for 12 years, then

trained as a medical herbalist while running aromatherapy clinics at Chelsea &

Westminster Hospital and at centres for drug users and those with HIV. She

co-founded Living Medicine (www.livingmedicine.org), a vision for Britain's

first world herbal medicine/food centre of excellence with a web of community

healing gardens nationwide. Living Medicine herbalists currently run workshops

in Newham, exchanging knowledge between cultures and reskilling people in how to

use food and plants for their everyday healthcare.

Beatriz Linhares DipPhyt MNIMH CertCHM MRCHM GHR GQHP

Beatriz has been practising herbal medicine for the past 29 years, based in

North London and Hertfordshire. She qualified from the College of Phytotherapy

in 1982 and from the School of Chinese Herbal Medicine in 1996. In 1997 Beatriz

undertook further clinical training in Nanjing Provincial Hospital in China. She

combines both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches in her

practice. She has been a member of the Whipps Cross Hospital Herbal Dermatology

Clinic team for over eight years.

In 1987 she qualified as an Active Birth Teacher with Janet Balaskas and taught

ante-natal, post-natal, couple classes and baby massage classes for many years.

An active supporter of home birth, she attends births and prepares women for

birth with the CE Hypnobirthing Method. In 2010 Beatriz qualified in

Hypnotherapy with Corinna Elsey of CE Hypnotherapy Training and specialises in

regression. She has a special interest in treating the underlying emotional

cause of stress and ill health which she finds an invaluable tool in her

practice.

Krishna Ramamurthy DipPhyt MCPP

Krishna has been practising as a herbalist in North London since 1998. He

trained at the College of Phytotherapy. He worked for six years until 2010 in

the herbal clinic in the dermatology department at Whipps Cross Hospital, where

he was tutor-practitioner to BSc Herbal Medicine students. In 2008 he conducted

a service review of the herbal medicine service at Whipps Cross.

Dr Shefali Rajpopat, Consultant Dermatologist

Dr Rajpopat graduated in Medicine from King's College London in 1999 and trained

in Dermatology at Barts and the London and The Royal Free Hospitals. In 2008 she

undertook a two-year MD research project looking at genetic skin disease with a

focus on harlequin ichthyosis under the supervision of Professors Edel O'Toole

and Kelsell at the Centre for Cutaneous Research in London. Since November

2010 Dr Rajpopat has been a Consultant Dermatologist at Whipps Cross University

Hospital and a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Queen College (University of

London) where she has a special interest in medical education and is a course

director for the international postgraduate diploma in clinical dermatology.
