It is depressing.. going through similar stuff. My doc put me on precose

in addition to my present glucophage.

Like to read? Look for a book named " The Feeling Good Handbook " , but Dr.

D. Burns. Helps you to sort out feelings. My wife has severe PAD,

and she said it was a helpful book.

Dave, how do you like taking precose.I ask because in Diabetes Education the

nurse told us they only like using that in Europe and the side effects are

many. She said it wasn't used much in the states. I had asked if she had used

it {she had said earlier she had been a diabetic for 7 years} she had said

no.I had also asked how much weight she had lost, she had gain, also asked

how she controlled her type 2 diabetes, her answer was insulin.I wanted to

ask why she was teaching us, but husband asked me not to, he doesn't have my

sense of humor.:+} D.J.

According to my doctor, it's fairly newly accepted here in the US of A.

Precose is Acarbose, as I found on RXList. She says that it helps to

slow down the digestion/absorption of carbs.

The side effects are the same as glucophage: possible stomach pain,

flatulence, and diarrhea (per RXLIST). I haven't had any stomach pain or

diarrhea, but the dogs don't hang around me. I've been on glucophage

which has similar side effects for a long time.

Unlike sulfonylureas or insulin, an overdose of PRECOSE ® will not

result in hypoglycemia. An

overdose may result in transient increases in flatulence, diarrhea, and

abdominal discomfort which

shortly subside.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

PRECOSE ® is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to

the drug and in patients with

diabetic ketoacidosis or cirrhosis. PRECOSE ® is also contraindicated

in patients with inflammatory

bowel disease, colonic ulceration, partial intestinal obstruction or in

patients predisposed to intestinal

obstruction. In addition, PRECOSE ® is contraindicated in patients who

have chronic intestinal diseases

associated with marked disorders of digestion or absorption and in

patients who have conditions that

may deteriorate as a result of increased gas formation in the

intestine.

DJ, you have hit on a sore point, what right does a non-diabetic have in

teaching diabetics? Or as you point out a not particularly successful

diabetic, but I guess they do the best with what is available.

I lent a neighbor a Profile meter so I could print out a graph of his

sugars, his nurse at Kaiser threw it in the trash without a glance, yes

she's still there. My nurse at Kaiser took one glance at mine, and

pointed out something I had not taken note of, yes and I'm skilled in

graphig. She is now up in the Kaiser heirachy. Someone asked how I got

her, just lucky I guess. Sam
