Guest guest
I take Provigil. What's the other medicine? I want to see if it will be cheaper with my insurance. I think Provigil sometimes makes me feel weird. Thanks, I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory. ____________________________________________________ IncrediMail - Email has finally evolved - Click Here

Guest guest
THANKS CHARLES, YOU ARE RIGHT AND PROZAC IS THE ONE I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER AND YES I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ALTHO I HAD NO PROBLEM WITH IT I HAVE A D-I-L WHO YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE AROUND IF SHE DOES NOT HAVE HER PROZAC. THAT IS ONE OR THE MAIN REASONS I TRY TO CALL HER OFTEN JUST TO SEE HOW SHE IS DOING. BY THE WAY WELCOME I JUST SEEN THAT YOUR INTRO CAME IN LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING TO KNOW YOU. HAPPINESS AND BUTTERFLIES TO YOU AND YOURS LYNN Mister Zig wrote: Lynn Anti-depressants. The big ones that come to mind are: Prozac Wellbutrin Zoloft Paxil Effexir I believe that the big problem with Prozac is that like most anti depressents, you have to ramp up to the right dosage (co-ordinated with the health care giver) but dont ever you or let anyone else suddenly run out of Prozac. You have to ramp down on that one as well. People suddenly without their Prozac figgure that Suicide is selfish, Homicide is sharing. Guest guest
I am really anti-drug Tom, I applaud what you do for yourself....I used to do it too...vitamins, herbs, aroma therapy, teas, even putting certain foods together for optimum results.....I still have a slew of natural medicine books that I still use.....however, I have come to believe more in traditional medicines in the past few years...my daughter diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at barely four (yes, I know, insulin is a hormone and I *argue* that point with some folks when they ask her about her medicine), my daughter has depression , neuropathy and non specific seizures, my son diagnosed bipolar in 2002 - without meds he would have been successful with his suicide attempts, I believe...but we still use as little as possible, then he was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Malformation 1 last year, immediately followed by my daughter's diagnosis with the same thing - both has brain surgery last summer, my son further has hypothyroid, sleep apnea, pseudo tumor, GERD and on and on.....he is looking at a couple of more surgeries.....I am grateful for the meds for them both as it allows a reasonable level of functioning for them......then there are my three leaking heart valves and MS.....I still rely on vitamins, herbs and especially aroma therapy but have come to believe that some drugs are necessary to balance out what is deficient in the system......JMO........started Provigil today for fatigue and sure hope it helps as we are closing on our house Thursday and moving Saturday......yep, I am single....I was talking to the hubby of a dear friend last night as they has come over to help pack some things that are very difficult for me.....I used to do almost anything myself (even homebuilding) and it is very difficult at times to have to have others do what I know how to do but I believe it is time for my life to move in a new direction.....I just have to figure out what that is :-)........wow, my hands are doing pretty good this am...... Guest guest
Wendi, I am really not the one to ask. I am really anti-drug and could not give you a credible or knowledgeable answer. I firmly believe that once we accept that we have ms we can manage it and overcome it as good or better than traditional medicine and it's drugs. I know a lot of ms'er's that take so many drugs they don't have a chance. Regards, Tom
Guest guest
Hi Beverly, I also applaud you and what you are doing and have done. There is definitely a place for traditional medicine AND alternative medicine. Fortunately, I have a doc that is familiar with both. My anti-drug thoughts ONLY have to do with me and my ms. I certainly and wholeheartedly believe that we must and should do what our knowledgeable people advise. My hat is off to you, you surely have your hands full and are doing the best that you can........and that is all you can do. Keep up the good work. Guest guest
Wendi, There are several meds available if fatigue is an issue: cylert and provigil are two of them. See issues of TMA Newsletter (www.myelitis.org) for further discussion of treatment. TMA is Transverse Myelitis Association, a group of those who have what we used to call "single sclerosis", involvement of the spinal cord but not the brain. In these newsletters you will find excellent discussions of treatments for the symptoms caused by this disorder, which in some cases converts to MS. Fatigue is such a general symptom, though, that it's important to be sure that nothing else might be causing the fatigue. I think that Tom has a point, that other things may also work, and should be tried if you can so that medicines can be avoided if possible. ...." I firmly believe that once we accept that we have ms we can manage it and overcome it as good or better than traditional medicine and its drugs." Tom, I think that accepting the diagnosis, understanding that it is not the end of our lives but a different path we're on is very important-essential. I am glad that you've been able to function without the need for medications to help with whatever symptoms you have. There are many things by way of non-traditional, adjunct therapies that can indeed help. However, without medications I would be unable to walk, or lift my hands above about shoulder level, or reach out my hand without significant spasms drawing it back. I would be in severe pain throughout the day,and even though I was exhausted, the pain and leg spasms would prevent me from sleeping. My blood pressure would be so low and my heart rate would be so high that even when I stood up I would immediately have to lie down. I would be unable to even sit up. I've discovered that these symptoms persist even when I take a "drug holiday" . I don't like having to take medications to treat all these symptoms. But no amount of meditation or other adjunct therapies have been able to control them. We should not throw pills at every little symptom, for sure. And we need to find a sympathetic provider who can in addition to traditional meds can help us with finding such things as relaxation exercises, tai chi, physical exercise, meditation, etc. (I'm not wild about alternative meds because of their unpredictability). Personally, I think a mix is the right approach. I am glad for you, though, that you've been able to avoid meds entirely! Sam in Boston--it must be Spring, the Sox are at Spring Training!
