Guest guest
Cassandra, I think you should ask your surgeon these questions. I doubt the bone grows back................I have had this surgery however I am not sure what you mean by the durapalsty......this allows the spinal fluid to flow more freely..............I also had a duraplasty .............ask your Neurologist and or neurosurgeon pre surgery so that you and yours understand what is happening. ACM surgery is a delicate surgery, be sure what you are looking for ahead,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I can assure you, as one of the lucky ones, who have had this surgery and it was successful, however everyone one is different. Good luck with your surgery, keep us posted on CCI how everything goes. Be sure to check everything that CCI has for pre and post surgery in their files...............the main thing I can say is if your are in a car get a sheep skin headrest for ever and a day................post surgery............. I still need it ...be it if I AM THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER!! Biddy. ACM1 Posterior Fossa Decompression with Duraplasty, Sub-Occipital Craniectomy, Partial C1 Laminectomy. 2006. Does the bone at the base of the skull regrow after decompression? Or is it the dura holding the space and it's not bone? We ask because I ride a motorcycle. It'll be difficult to wear a helmet if my back of my skull is not solid after all is healed. Thanks all!! Guest guest
I agree with the post, to ask your neurosurgeon what s/he will do. Not all surgeries are the same.  Let him/her know about the importance of the helmet to you. Ask him to draw a picture for you where the important cuts will be inside related to the outside. Then compare it to where different helmets sit on the back of your head. You may find a helmet that irritates the h* & ^ out of that space, one that sits above it, one that sits below it. You could try them on ahead of time, but maybe wait until after surgery AND RECOVERY to decide which helmet will work best for you, or if you need some extra padding in the back.  I was decompressed in 2002, so I am 8 years post op. I have a titanium mesh plate where they had to take out the skull bone and cow heart tissue to replace the dura. The back of my skull is not bigger and there is no bone overgrown. I have had several follow up MRI's and it always look fine. I might be having another one soon, so I will ask them if they can see if there is any overgrowth of bone.  I agree with the other posts, too, start looking now for headrests and pillows you like. My surgery was even more successful than the surgeon estimated, but I still need to keep up with when my head hurts, especially in the back on the left. I can set off migraines and what appear to be old symptoms if I don't pay attention to the signs of pain coming on and do something about it. The more my head is supported while driving, reading and relaxing, the less problems I have at the end of the day.  This reminds me, that I wanted to get or make a headrest for when I drive. I drive so little lately, only 5 miles to work, I forgot to replace the one that I used to use.  Best wishes. I hope your surgery goes well. I was so scared that the whole time I focused on how great I would feel 6 months after surgery. And it came true.  Hanna     Subject: Bone regrows?? Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your replies. We will be asking the surgeon this question, but we don't see him until just before surgery on the 22nd, so I wanted to ask my experienced friends. I'm sure he told us at my consult, but that was November and I don't have it in my notes from the visit. And I can't just make an appointment to pop in and see him - it's a 2 hour plane ride... And please don't worry, I'm not planning on jumping back on my bike right away. Maybe next summer. But, if I'm not ready then it will be later still. I was told I couldn't race, but I was told I should be able to ride again. I wear a full face race helmet which comes down quite low on the back of my skull. Plus armoured leather gear and race boots. Even for street riding. I've seen people with asphalt in their thighs and elbows - no thanks!! I laid my bike down once, and loved having my leather protection!! And I already gave up rollercoasters.... gotta have something left to look forward to Thanks and have a painfree day!!! Guest guest
The hole is usually very small even in nonenfoscopic PDF. If the hole is bigger than say a quarter, most surgeons use harvested skull, like a layer from an adjacent area or they use a metal mesh plate. Dr. Said I could play soccer so I think you could ride. I just found out that mine is not covered. Had it done 1.5 weeks ago. Good luck! > > We're just 18 days before my decompression surgery.
