Hello n,

How about a soothing massage oil like 1 gtt dill EO to 15 ml sweet

almond oil, massaged in a clockwise fashion over the infant's abdomen?

Kind regards,

Kerry

Get her onto Goat's milk formula (Nanny) - if formula fed.

Get the mother drinking Filipendula tea if breast fed and try - as much as

is possible, depending on weight & age of the baby - not to feed at night,

prop the cot up and make sure the clothes aren't tight around the waist.

Good luck

Also, look at mum.

Is this her first baby? how relaxed is she with him/her? Is she relaxed

or stressy around feeding time? Is Mum getting enough

support/encouragement?

Hi n,

It would be a good idea if the parents got an ultrasound done. A friend's baby

had reflux which was dismissed by the local specialist baby clinic and had U/S

done privately where they found the baby's stomach was underdeveloped and it was

allergic to normal milks and now on special formula and thriving. Maybe worth

trying?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a 4 month old baby with reflux?

Thanks.

This is not herbal advice but may be of interest....

If the baby's reflux is mild, and baby is still feeding well and isn't too upset

by it, then the following may help:

- hold baby upright for up to 20 minutes after each feed

- try smaller but more frequent feeds

- ensure loose clothing/nappies

- if bottle fed, burp baby every two or three minutes during feeds

If the reflux is more severe, they may benefit from a 2 week trial of feed

thickeners, pre-thickened formula, antacids or prokinetics (or herbal

alternatives mentioned).

The symptoms of reflux can be very similar to the symptoms of a cow's milk

protein allergy (CMPA) or intolerance.

If " reflux " is not responding to antacids/prokinetics/feed thickeners, and baby

is having feeding difficulties, or is unhappy or uncomfortable after feeds, has

repeated effortless vomiting, excessive crying or back arching, or is failing to

thrive...consider cow's milk protein allergy. If breastfeeding, mum may need to

stop drinking cow's milk or having food or drinks containing cow's milk. If baby

is formula-fed they will need a hypoallergenic formula. Ask GP for a 2 week

trial to see if a change of formula helps.

If this baby has CMPA, it will also react to the proteins in goat's milk formula

as they share similar allergenic proteins. Therefore, an extensively hydrolysed

formula should be used instead. Also, soya formula is not generally recommended

for infants under 6 months of age.

Re goat's milk formula.....Infant formula made from goat's milk is not permitted

for sale throughout the EU as their scientific panel concluded that there is

insufficient evidence that goat's milk is nutritionally adequate or safe as a

protein source for infants. Currently, only cow's milk and soy based products

qualify as protein sources for infant formula under the 2006 EU Directive.

However, Nanny Care is still available to purchase on the internet, and has got

around the ban by avoiding any reference to being an infant formula on the tin

and instead uses the phrase: " goat milk nutrition " .
