Guest guest
I am new to this board but found it because I was, and still am, concerned about my 6 year old being on Miralax for any amount of time really.I was very reluctant to start my dd on Mralax and, after being given the prescription, I still tried other things to help with her constipation. After a week or so of her still have the same symptoms that prompted me to take her to a urologist, I started her on the Miralax. My concerns are the fact that laxatives are very habit forming. The thought of my 6 year old being on laxatives for the rest of her life, or even a few months or years, is disturbing to me. There is some underlying reason why my dd is having constipation. All the Miralax does, is force her body to have a bowel movement with the use of chemicals. Miralax does not address the underlying problem, whatever that may be. Would you care to share your story? have used this product on a 4yr old several times no issue i'd love to know what im missing
Guest guest
I didn't see an immediate reaction. It took a few weeks and when I put my son on it every day..he ended up needing more and more. We never saw very loose stools. Then I noticed side effects and took him off, went back to the oxypowder, magnesium/c rotation. Our new Dr had my sons stool tested by Metamatrix called GI effects. It tests by DNA analysis. Come to find out he has H. Pylori. Usually only diagnosed by invasive biopsy. After treatment he is going every day no problem. Always good to find the underlying problem. He always tested low beneficial bacteria and yeasty but treating H pylori really helped 40 and Mom to threeTash 23 ooops..new Mommy ( I'm a Grammy to Kyri 2 )Casey-Mae 14..sweet as pieElijah 3.5 .. Guest guest
,If you don;t mind me asking, why does your daughter see a urologist? My 3 year old sees a gastro and urologist. We don;t know why she has chronic constipation that we have been dealing with since birth but she has reflux in her bladder. She has been on miralax for 2 years and is up to two full doses. Then they changed it to 1 dose and milk of mag but my husband and I have pulled her off it slowly ourselves and are trying more natural stuff like high fiber foods and cutting out or limiting sugar, gluten, and dairy.ThanksFaithTo: miralax Sent: Mon, November 23, 2009 7:35:47 PMSubject: Re: i see nothing wrong I am new to this board but found it because I was, and still am, concerned about my 6 year old being on Miralax for any amount of time really.I was very reluctant to start my dd on Mralax and, after being given the prescription, I still tried other things to help with her constipation. Guest guest
H Pylori simple definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicobacter_pylori) A bacteria that can cause ulcers and in my son cause GERD and constipation. I have to say that the Dr who tested my son was a pediatrician, still is, but went more towards holistic style. He has followed Dr Buie's work ( whom we couldn't get in to see, even though we frequent Mass General Hospital ) he just has too many patients. But anyhow, the test covered alot of things those regular stool tests dont. (http://www.metametrix.com/content/DirectoryOfServices/DNA-Stool-Analysis-GI-Eff\ ects) My friend has a child she wanted tested but no doctor to order it, so she ordered it through (Directlabs.com) called Gastrointestinal Function Profile GI Effect..same test we had. Just more expensive that way Hope this helps (http://www.metametrix.com/content/DirectoryOfServices/DNA-Stool-Analysis-GI-Eff\ ects) > > What is H. pylori and how did you find it? > > > > > > ________________________________ > > To: miralax > Sent: Mon, November 23, 2009 7:57:18 PM > Subject: Re: i see nothing wrong > > > I didn't see an immediate reaction. Guest guest
I would also like to add that with anything at lower doses, you wouldn't see the damage. That's what makes this drug so evil, it's internal and you can't see the harm it's doing. There are hundreds of testimonies on here stating that ah ha moment they realized what their child has been doing and never corrolated the two, nor did the doctors. Please read the files section. There are some who claim this didn't have any adverse affects, but, the company states, "Do not give to children" for a reason! Guest guest
I don't mind at all but I " m not sure it will help anyone. But I hope it does :)In January 2009, my then 6 year old dd had her first seizure. She had another one when in our small, local hospital as they were stabilizing her to transfer her to the childrens' hospital in our area. there she was given an eeg which showed brain abnormalities and abnormal brain activity when exposed to blinking lights. she was put on Keppra to prevent any more seizures. Within 5 weeks, she had an allergic reaction with hives, swelling of her arms and legs, itching, and an eventual refusal to walk because it hurt her so much, that she ended back up at the childrens hospital for 5 days. While she was there, her neuro changed her meds and she started having urinary hesitation issues. She would sit on the toilet for many minutes and couldn't pee. This went on for months. I was convinced that it was the new meds (Depakote) since its occurrence coincided with it. Her neuro didn't want to change her meds again since he wasn't convinced it was the depakote. he put her on valium because he thought it was her anxiety (she is an anxious child. i'm still trying to address it). I held onto the valium prescription for days before i finally gave it to her for 5 days. it didn't do a thing for her except keep her awake. Back to the neuro we went and the neuro did change her meds to topomax. Her urinary issues improve very slightly. By this time, I was running the water in the sink, giving her drinks of water, and putting her fingers in cold water, all things (old wives tales, maybe?) I had heard would help if you couldn't pee. In the end, I don't think it helped her at all. It was a very frustrating time for us both. I took her to the childrens hospital urologist because I didn't know what else to do. They did an ultrasound on her bladder and intestines while we were there in the room and it should that she was so severely constipated that feces was back up. I don't remember how far backed up the urologist said the feces was but she made it sound really serious. She mentioned having to have her cleaned out or something to that effect if the miralax didn't help. The thought of her having some procedure to clean her out and the thought of her being on laxatives made me very afraid. I held onto the prescription for the miralax for over a week, trying to take care of her constipation with diet. It didn't work as she was still having urinary issues and her bowel movements were the same. She was on Miralax for 2 months. She took a capful in her juice in the morning. It fixed her urinary issues. After 2 months, I took her off the miralax. I was hoping that the miralax got her over the hump and i could now treat her with diet. She had also started fighting me about taking it. She has had a couple of incidents of urinary hesitancy since then. Her anxiety has also gone up a few notches. I'm not sure what the anxiety is related to since there are certainly things going on in our lives that are anxiety provoking. So i don't know if the anxiety is a miralax issue or related to an issue in our lives. although I thought our lives had kind of calmed down by the time her anxiety ratcheted up. She was sensitive to milk when i was nursing her. So much so that I had to cut out anything with milk or casein or anything like for over a year. I slowly added it back in but I've always thought she had dairy issues. She also had sort of dried skin behind her ears for years and years. Her pediatrician told me it was kind of like dandruff and to put head and shoulders non it but that is not something i wanted to do. I am interested in an elimination diet but am not sure how to go about it. I tried her on rice milk, soy milk and almond milk and she doesn't like any of it. I don't give her much milk to drink (and so now of course I am worried about if her calcium intake is enough) but do cook and use cheese and yogurt fairly often. Enough of my book. lol.If anyone has ideas for an elimination diet, I'd love to hear them. One caveat: it must not be overwhelming. lol. I've looked online but the places I " ve looked have overwhelmed me. I also am a single parent so funds are pretty limited. I can spend some money but i don't really want to throw away food i already have. I also don't want to have to cook two meals 3x a day. Is that what others do? Cook a meal for the person on the elimination diet and then other food for everyone else? I don't know how to best approach it so I would appreciate any and all advice. Thank you. ,If you don;t mind me asking, why does your daughter see a urologist? My 3 year old sees a gastro and urologist. Guest guest
Well, my son was tested for milk allergy...tests shows he is not allergic to milk. I see a difference, so maybe he is just sensitive to it. Anyway, he loves Orange Juice, I buy the Minute Maid ABCDE plus Calcium. And yes, most families make at least 2 different meals due to kids on elimination diets. We did it for 4 months...that was living He*l. I'm on another yahoogroup (eosinophilicgastro). All of the kids on there are on elimination diets...lots of the families have multiple children on different diets...I don't know how they do it. If your only trying to eliminate milk, then cooking with the soy, rice, etc...shouldn't be noticeable. Now, drinking it or eating cereal...nothing tastes like real milk...that's the hard part. For constipation this is what keeps my son going 1 day skipping 2, going 1 day skipping 2. GI doc says that is fine as long as it doesn't hurt. 1 daily probiotic 1 daily multivitamin 2 daily vitamin c 2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil before bed 2 times a week: 2 tsp Milk of Magnesia 2 times a week: 1 chopped fresh clove of garlic Milk is not eliminated but his intake is minimal. For his calcium needs we go with the Minute Maid ABCDE plus calcium. Some times he goes every other day, but usually every 3rd day, and it is a lot....but it never hurts anymore. Guest guest
- you've been through a lot. I know it can feel overwhelming to consider an elimination diet, but it was tremendously beneficial to us - particularly regarding constipation/withholding cycles, painful urination, congestion, eczema/cradle cap, and behaviors. Please consider not trying to cook separate meals if you do an elimination diet. It's too complicated and way too hard to avoid cross-contamination. there are plenty of options on an elimination diet and in my opinion (and I'm NOT a medical practitioner, just been in this and several other discussion groups for a few years now) if one child benefits from elimination of certain food/foods, then others in the family very likely will as well. From what I've learned, the top contenders related to constipation seem to be gluten and casein/milk, with soy, egg, and corn also being problematic for many. You should know, too, that if you think you'll want to do lab tests for food intolerances, these should be done _prior_ to elimination of any foods. I see you've tried alternatives to milk, but to truly eliminate dairy - must eliminate ALL sources - milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and anything that contains a milk derivative (e.g., casein, whey, etc.). Sounds like you were doing this while breastfeeding her. There are a lot of sneaky sources of gluten out there as well. FWIW - my ds#1 was intolerant of milk/casein when I was breastfeeding him, also corn, soy, egg, nuts. I only wish then that I knew/realized gluten was also a problem. But is severe reflux, painful stools with mucus, vomiting, etc. got so much better with my elimination of milk/casein, soy, egg, and corn, that I didn't realize he was still having other isses (e.g., occasionally mucus-y stools, crusty scalp/cradle cap, etc.) He was gaining weight like crazy and growing so the pediatrician always gave glowing check ups. We eliminated gluten when DS#2 was about 1 year old & his cradle cap/crust behind ears cleared up nearly immediately. It would come back shortly after accidental food infractions and take weeks to clear back up. Doing an elimination diet is really not too hard if you stick to real food - foods that came directly from a plant or animal - avoid processed foods, buy all food as fresh as possible. If you do buy processed foods - scour the labels and if you buy pre-made and/or restaurant food - be very careful in screening & asking questions about ingredients. Also - for us, we could not tolerate many of the gluten-free flours/grains like sorghum, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, bean flours, etc. - so be cautious of using pre-made gluten-free items which likely contain one or more of these flours. It took me a long time to tweak those out - I wish I'd known to avoid them entirely & introduce one at a time, slowly. A few of my older posts on elimination diet & what worked for us: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/message/14281 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/message/11509 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/message/12076 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/message/11989 and info on food allergy/intolerance in the beginner's file of this group: http://tiny.cc/EUtVb hth!!! best, > > > >> > >> > >> have used this product on a 4yr old several times no issue i'd love to > >> know what im missing > >> > >> > > > > > > >

Guest guest
, I'd try the Kirkman chewable probiotic. It's not that expensive and helped us tremendously. They also make a trial size for just a few dollars, this way you aren't spending a lot for starters. The sorbitol acts like a laxative while replenishing the good bacteria. http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/ViewProductDetails@Product_ID@184@Product_Group_ID@... Siezures can be caused by many things, here's a few I'd eliminate if you're using them: Flame retardant Pajamas *** biggie*** The retardant soaks in their skin all night, use 100% cotton Pesticides in, or around the house Lawn treatments, Fertilizers, herbacides that kill the dandelions, crab grass, etc. Eliminate any child from being around remodeling of house, pulling up carpeting, tearing out drywall or windows Their very own mattress flame retardant http://www.pr9.net/health/environmental/9423september.html http://www.snugorganics.com/ http://wildlife-conservation.suite101.com/article.cfm/peregrine_falcons_and_chemicals http://www.5minutesforgoinggreen.com/299/avoiding-flame-retardants-in-cozy-childrens-pajamas/ mattress's can be a biggie http://consumer-alerts-product-recalls.suite101.com/article.cfm/arthritis_caused_by_toxins_in_mattress_materials have used this product on a 4yr old several times no issue i'd love to know what im missing
Guest guest
Part 2. My computer freaked out and wouldn't let me finish the email. If you can find the way to start baby steps and slowly work up to doing this I feel your child fits right in to GAPS. The way you discribe her unfounded anxiety seems very much like overgrowth to me. I had been trying to figure a way to do an elimination diet and this is the best way that fits my liking. Maybe it will work for you. I ignore the suggestion to go organic. I am not a single mom. but between my dh partial disability and the lack of work we live on a shoe string. If you want to learn more about GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) you can find info on these two sites: http://gapsguide.com/about/conditions-addressed-by-gaps/www.gapsdiet.comHope this helps! Guest guest
Thanks , I've been looking for a mattress myself, I would have never found this if it weren't for you, It looks like IKEA is the way to go........... http://www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/blogs/organic-parenting/organic-mattress-55121201According to this, all mattresses have some, but any less is better if you ask me http://dld123.com/q & a/index.php?cid=10125 It's sure worth a try...............also, Pfeiffer Treatment Center in Naperville IL does testing to see what toxins are in the body and you may be able to pinpoint what is causing these seizures. They are a non-profit organization with real MD's. I've been there myself. They have clinics set up all over the world. IMO (In my opinion) The idea is to find the source, take it out of her enviorment. Not give medication to suppress could becausing it. Guest guest
My ds has food sensitivities (as opposed to allergies) that only make his constipation worse when he eats them, so we use a form of elimination diet...during holidays like now, it's tough when we're constantly traveling to other peoples' homes...lots of carrying our own food and having to explain over and over, "No, it's not your cooking..." Know what I mean? Well, my son was tested for milk allergy...tests shows he is not allergic to milk. I see a difference, so maybe he is just sensitive to it. Anyway, he loves Orange Juice, I buy the Minute Maid ABCDE plus Calcium. And yes, most families make at least 2 different meals due to kids on elimination diets. We did it for 4 months...that was living He*l. I'm on another yahoogroup (eosinophilicgastro). All of the kids on there are on elimination diets...lots of the families have multiple children on different diets...I don't know how they do it.If your only trying to eliminate milk, then cooking with the soy, rice, etc...shouldn't be noticeable. Now, drinking it or eating cereal...nothing tastes like real milk...that's the hard part. For constipation this is what keeps my son going 1 day skipping 2, going 1 day skipping 2. GI doc says that is fine as long as it doesn't hurt. 1 daily probiotic1 daily multivitamin2 daily vitamin c2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil before bed 2 times a week: 2 tsp Milk of Magnesia2 times a week: 1 chopped fresh clove of garlic Milk is not eliminated but his intake is minimal. For his calcium needs we go with the Minute Maid ABCDE plus calcium. Some times he goes every other day, but usually every 3rd day, and it is a lot....but it never hurts anymore. DeannaFrom: katie slavnik <kaos2megmail>To: miralax Sent: Tue, November 24, 2009 11:39:30 PMSubject: Re: i see nothing wrong I don't mind at all but I"m not sure it will help anyone. Her neuro didn't want to change her meds again since he wasn't convinced it was the depakote.. he put her on valium because he thought it was her anxiety (she is an anxious child. i'm still trying to address it). They did an ultrasound on her bladder and intestines while we were there in the room and it should that she was so severely constipated that feces was back up.. After 2 months, I took her off the miralax.. One caveat: it must not be overwhelming. lol. I've looked online but the places I"ve looked have overwhelmed me. Thank you. Guest guest
Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions. After I posted last night, I did look at the GAP diet a little. To tell you the truth (I was reading testimonials) it sounded a little scary with lethargic and vomiting kids but I'll definitely look into it further. Something that jumped out at me when looking at the list of conditions that the GAP diet covers is bed wetting. My now 7 year old dd doesn't wet the bed but my 4 year old does. a lot. I know she is still pretty young but she also doesn't make it to the toilet during the day either. I think some of it is that she just doesn't want to stop and take the time to go to the potty. But since this has been going on for over a year, I think there might be some other issue going on. I did check out the Kirkmans Jeanie and thank you of the reminder about the sample bottle. I will get that to make sure my girls like it before investing in a larger size. When my 4 year old was a baby, I had some powdered probiotics that I would give the girls when they were having tummy issues and they enjoyed the taste. I can also get that locally. Do you think that would be alright to use? Do you give probiotics every day? Thank you for the links about the elimination diet. I'll check those out and see if I can make small changes at first. Maybe I'll start with eliminating milk. I've heard a lot about gluten free diets but haven't really done but research into them. I'll have to do so. Guest guest
That makes more sense than anything to me. Allergy or sensitivity to antibiotics...you know 10 years ago I became really ill for months. I had severe joint pain...couldn't work or even take care of my baby without my husband there. After finally getting to see the right doc (rheumotologist), then I was diagnosed with drug induced (minocycline antibiotic) auto immune disorder with lupus like symptoms. It took a year to get over that. And, my mom got 's syndrome from Celebrex. So we are evidently sensitive to drugs. By the way, I haven't been on here in a couple of months because my mom's cancer took a turn for the worse and she ended up in Hospice and is now enjoying her sweet rewards in Heaven. It really was a great loss for us, but we are doing better now and done with all the responsibilities that come with death and are trying to get things back to normal, so I will be back more regularly now. Guest guest
Sorry to hear that Deanna, but I'm glad your back. How is everything going? From reading your posts it sounds like your DS is doing much better than the last time we spoke. I I've been researching all the diagnosis's people have reported since you came on and mentioned they were diagnosing your son with Guillian Barr and I'm pretty convinced they label people with these condition names when they know the body is reacting to something and they call it one of these terms. In other words, it's kind of like "Otherwise Specified As".............or "we don't know", but they have a condition. Looking the other way instead of looking at WHAT the person/child was taking at the time. They must feel that parents need a diagnosis to let them rest. It doesn't change a thing. Why don't they just call it a toxic reaction to Miralax? This is what he took...........and this was the reaction! Check out the FDA adverse reactions in the files section. There are 1,403 now. There are a lot of those conditions on there. Glad your back......... Guest guest
Cody is doing much, much better...thanks. I watched a video on Dr. Mercola's website a month ago...It was an old interview from the 50's or 60's, about a women who took the Swine Flu vaccine and ended up with Guilliam Barre Syndrome from it. It was caused from toxicity from a drug...same with Cody, huh? I know he will never take that S*it again!!! I have been seeing the commercials on TV for it...it makes me ILL!!! Guest guest
It typically is caused from viral issues. We suspected my son had it 5yrs ago following his 5yr vaccine round(viral injections). He was pretty severe. We treated him for viral and intestinal healing with anti virals. My son was so bad he quit walking(took a lot of work to get him out of a wheelchair to begin with and then that!! We was devastated, thank GOD his is walking again. He had severe drooling during that time also.
