Hi, Tracey:

Just wanted to say that I have had problems with my legs for a very long time.

First I had one leg that jumped around of it's own free will.  Then I was

diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome.  Then the other leg started jumping

around. And the tingling, like electrical currents started   Years after the

symptoms started,a wonderful nurse practictioner ordered an MRI of my lower

back.  Turns out that all that jumping, tingling, etc., is caused from

deginerating discs pressing on nerves.

Numbness is a possible symptom. You may want to discuss this with your doc.

I've seen on here much talk of degenerative disc disease... is this yet another

problem caused by FMS?

Rosemarie,

The mask is a great idea, I should have thought about that.. my bedroom window

gets eastern sunlight... and this also might keep my husband form poking me in

the eye when he roles over!!!!

I too get very sensative to light.... I have also noticed if i have too many

electrical things on in my bedroom it makes me edgy and not sleep well.

Yes I too have leg problems. I get restless legs at night, plus a lot of

numbness in one leg and pins and needles. I have leg cramps at night

sometimes very painful on the outside of my leg not just in the calf and big

toe area.

What I have done that has helped me are the following:

1. magnesium every night before bed. (I found liquid magnesium on line. No

IBS then)

2. potassium every night before bed.(I have prescription strength from my

doc. 25 Meq)

3. I sleep with a hot water bottle in a towel and if I feel a leg cramp

coming on I touch my leg to the hot water bottle and the heat relaxes it. I

wrap a hand towel around the bottle so it doesn¹t burn my leg to though so

be careful of that. I have burned my leg but not serious and it helped me

so much I do it every single night even on vacations.

4. I go to sleep with a sleep mask on because it blocks the light and I get

into a deep sleep that way. Without a sleep mask I don¹t ever get into a

deep sleep. I take it off half way through the night if I wake up because I

don¹t need it then and sometimes it starts to make a wrinkle in my cheeks

that takes hours to go away. LOL

5.. I take amino acids before bed.

That¹s about it if I think of something I will tell you.

Vicki,

Could you please give me more detail on your diagnosis? I am very

interested in what you have to say about your degenerative joint disease /

degenerating discs. My DH is trying to figure out where his leg pain and

numbness is coming from and still think that maybe it is not FM and maybe a

problem similar to yours.

Thanks,

Jen

I mis-spoke...er...typed when I said 'disc'.  My husband has disc problems,

which cause tingling, sciatica, and weakness in his legs--mostly just one leg,

but the good one is weaker as a result of the one that is affected.  He had

surgery on one disc after bulging became a rupture.  After the surgery he did

much better for a long time, but other discs are causing him minor pain now, so

we are careful with his back.

I have degenerative joint disease in my lower back--in particular, L3 through S1

vertabrea.  The bones are slowly crumbling.  I think this was the cause of my

'restless leg syndrome' diagnosis several years ago, in California.  At that

time the doctor asked questions, did a brief physical exam and that was that.

When I started seeing a nurse practioner up here in Missouri, she listened.  She

ordered tests and found the real problem.  An MRI was the determining test.  No

one has mentioned any kind of surgery, etc., which makes me happy cause I really

don't want back surgery.  Despite my husband's great response to surgery, I've

known many people who had back surgery and ended up with more pain than before

the surgery.

So, I could wear a brace to stablize my lower back, but I don't want

to--compression is not comfortable for me because of the fibro.  What I need to

do is build the muscles that stablize the lower back, to protect what is left of

the bones.  That means work on my core--abs, back--all the muscles around my

body from the bottom of the ribs to the top of the hip bones..  I use ice packs

to reduce swelling around my spine.  I would take NSAIDS, but I'm allegic.  I

use pain pills when I'm driving, or if I have to sit for more than a few

minutes.  I would love to have access to the lidoderm patches, but haven't

gotten a response from the manufacturer yet about getting them free.  They

really help, but are really expensive.

Hope this info helps you.  If you have more questions, just ask.

Yes Joy. It took me a long time to figure out the mask. I read about it in

a book on insomnia. My husband can¹t believe the difference in me. I used

to yell at him to shut the lights off. Now idon¹t care. I fall right

asleep :)
