Hi a! Well, how my PCOS diagnosis came about is a long story.

I've NEVER had regular periods. In high school and college I would

get one once a year if I was lucky. I went to my GYN after college

and told her about it and she immediatly put me on birth control.

Come to find out years later that she knew what was going on, but

never told me.

5 years later my DH and I decide we want to try and have children. I

go off the pill and back to my old cycles. I went to my new GYN (we

had moved) and told him what was going on and about my history. He

tells me he thinks I have PCOS. They schedule a battery of blood

tests and an ultrasound. My blood work shows classic PCOS (something

about the ratio of FSH and LH? I can't remember) and my ultrasound

show LOTS of little cysts. I was put on glucophage several months

later because the doctors (and a lot of research) shows that insulin

resistance may be linked to PCOS and glucophage helps your body deal

with your insulin better.

Right now we aren't actively trying to have kids, we moved to VA from

NY and the timing isn't right...so I'm not on glucophage but then

again, I'm not really getting periods...I'm not on the pill

either...so technically we haven't been doing anything to prevent

getting pregnant and I still haven't gotten preggers...

The thing that annoys me most about this is that it's been made clear

to me that I won't be able to have kids without medical intervention

and that we'll have to schedule everything...ya know? That's why I'm

hoping to lose some more weight...weight loss does help ease the

symptoms. I haven't noticed anything yet. I've lost about 25 pounds

in the year and a half since I've been diagnosed...but I'll keep going!

Sorry this is SO long!

Jen,

Did the Glucophage help your weight at all when you were on it? I

know a lot of people loose while taking the medication. I was on it

for a while (can't afford it now) and I noticed I was less hungry. I

don't think I lost any weight because of all the other medication I

was on at the time which encouraged gaining weight. I still don't

havea diagnosis, but my periods are atypical PCOS. I have heavy

although very irregular periods when I am not on the pill. Sometimes

my cycles go 40 plus days (but I am only 15lbs off from my ideal

healthy weight). But i do have some of the other symptoms, pre-

diabetes, cysts, build bigger muscles than most girls, top heavy,

hair issues (on my stupid belly!) and etc.

I want kids someday as well. My man needs to get his act together

and marry me already J/K. So I'm extra-determined to keep it under

control as well. Taebo and other forms of exercise have really

helped me. Don't be afraid to try new things in fitness. It will pay

off. And no matter what you see on the scale, remember the benefits

are more than just physical.
