How do you know you are resistant to a med?? Do you just start coughing up more??

Hi ,

I think we know best when an antibiotic is no longer working, when there is no decrease in sputum, and we are not feeling any better. A sputum culture will confirm what bug is growing and the sensitive antibiotics. However, the culture sensitivies are a guide only. My pseudomonas tests "sensitive" to a number of antibiotics that in practise do not work. In some cases, it's just a matter of trial and error until the right combination is found.

Take care and keep well.

Resistance to a med isnt just coughing up more..the med just stops working. You can tell this by symptoms, discolored sputum ( green or yellow )..change in body temp..( you should know what your normal body temp is..mine is normally 97.6. Anything over that I know another infection is developing)..body aches..etc..

HI Do any of you ever get a really LOW temp when you're sick? Also that description of how the inhaler works confirms for me why Dr won't let me use it due to increased blood flow it may cause.

Albuteral is called the 'rescue inhaler '...if you're gasping for air it sure is a life saver..I don't understand why your Dr would choose not to allow you to have that on hand in the event of a bronchiospasm..if used properly it helps us..

I also use a preventative advair inhaler - its a combination inhaler containing both a longer acting bronchodilator, Serevent and a corticosteroid, Flovent.

I take Advair..it's a diskus and it's powder form..mostly for those w/allergies/ashtma..

I used to take Servent..my dr switched me to Spiriva..a stronger compound

Hi Sandie, I agree with you. In fact, some of my CF friends with severe hemoptysis problems still have inhalers and masks. they only respect their masks and physio during bleeding episodes and even than many are still allowed to take their bronchodilators. in my case, salbutamol and ipravent are helpful. I used both in my aerosols (masks) four times daily and have inhalers to use should the power go out or if I'm very short of breath (SOB) at the mall, etc. I also use a preventative advair inhaler - its a combination inhaler containing both a longer acting bronchodilator, Serevent and a corticosteroid, Flovent. Anyhow, I have found that doctors tend to have various ideas and philosphies. Ssome may not believe in prescribing bronchodilators for bronchiectasis if someone does not appear to respond to them during the PFT test. Alternativey, I've read that some

doctors think bronchodilators (rescue inhalers) may make asthma worse, but I think this is often when the asthma meds are not be used as directed. My brother upon reading some of the bronchodilator research (he's not an MD) was wondering if some of my inhalers could be contributing to my lung disease. I've aways found them helpful, however, it will be interesting to see where the future lies in respect to various inhaled meds. Spiriva is good for many and helpful. My pharmacist says its really like a longer acting form of atrovent type med, and is not the same as Advair. I was on both Advair and Spirivia at the same time. Spiriva a good med for many. Unfortunately, Spirivia was not as helpful in my case and was stopped given the expense. Its hard to continue coverage when my doctors could not say this med was helping me. http://www.spiriva.com Hugs:0) LizPre-Lung Transplant Journey - For updates please visit my carepage and leave a message. I, too, am using Advair, and like its delivery. I also have albuterol inhaler on hand for emergencies and of course a liquid form for the nebulizer as needed. My doctor does not recommend Spiriva for me at least, prefers I use Advair as I guess Spiriva does not have a prednizone component which delivers direct anti-inflamation to the lungs only.
