Guest guest
Thyroxine could if the dose is too high - usually when the adrenals are pushing the thyroid problem Give strong adrenal support and the thyroid dose should lessen. I have had success with some insomniacs when I have given strong antiinflammatory herbs before bed, or even when they wake i nthe night. Inflammatory cytokines rise at night and some people genetically are programmed to make too many. (See SPelman's notes from a CCP meeting a couple of years ago.) Curcuma will lower these and I have seen it reduce high TSH readings too, as well as antithyroid antibody. One, in her sixties, has had it since childhood. The other, in her seventies, says she had no problem sleeping until she had to start taking thyroxine 20 years ago. Does anyone have any super effective approaches to insomnia? and could thyroxine start insomnia? many thanks Katharine
Guest guest
I have also seen this problem. In one case of insomnia in a 60yr old, with or without night terrors, the insomnia was likely triggered by sexual and emotional abuse, which is now being worked through. Delicate area, obviously, which needs sensitive handling and not to be named or diagnosed by us, I would suggest, but to see whether there was any emotional trigger in childhood and suggest referral to appropriate psychologist/psychotherapist if px feels this is worth exploring. Guest guest
Hi Katharine, the Pt who's had insomnia since childhood may also need non-pharmacological intervention (i.e. cognitive behavioural therapy - CBT) to deal with behavioural issues to help her get over the pattern of insomnia - this could include sleep hygiene, sleep restriction etc. She probably needs a therapist for this, but in milder cases some CBT approaches could be used as self-help - e.g. instead of tossing and turning, get up after 20 minutes, stay up for 20 minutes, then back to bed and so on. I used this in the past during exam times, when no herb would help, using the 20 minutes to take down wash, or sweep kitchen or any other inane non-demanding activity. It definitely reduced the anxiety of expecting/dreading sleeplessness and dramatically cut latency. Hope this helps Sabine insomnia > Dear List > > I am having difficulty making any impact with a couple of women > patients presenting with chronic insomnia. Guest guest
Many thanks , , Sabine, and offlist for useful food for thought. , it was precisely starting to take Thyroxine aged 52 that started one of the patients' insomnia. my rx includes Glyc gl FE & Withania FE ( & Hypericum, Scut lat, & Humulus). Do you know how long it may take to have an effect? best wishes Katharine > > Thyroxine could if the dose is too high - usually when the adrenals are pushing the thyroid problem Give strong adrenal support and the thyroid dose should lessen. > I have had success with some insomniacs when I have given strong antiinflammatory herbs before bed, or even when they wake i nthe night. Guest guest
Some pts notice a problem within hours. Others don't have a readily noticable reaction to Thyroxine. Guest guest
I did a search on Chiari and insomnia. Lots of sites list it as a symptom, but non gave a reason. Several years ago, they didn't list it as a symptom. I have heard theories, but nothing concrete. I didn't have insomnia until I had surgery. Both of my children have insomnia and haven't had surgery. My oldest hasn't slept well since birth. If anyone has a reason, please share it with the list. Kathleen Does anyone know why this happens to us?Currently the longest I get to sleep in one setting is around 45 minutes to an hour. Then I wake (wide awake) until I konk out and do it ALL AGAIN..ugh..Sound familar to anyone? Also have any of you tried Melatonin, herbs, or OTC meds? What seems to work best for you all? Anxious to hear!
