I have done this, it does work, I do high fat, low carb, it lowerd my

cholestrol (tryglycerides), and blood pressure, I used to take 5 pills a day

for high bp, now one ace inhibitor for kidney protection.

I still use insulin, have more than cut my insulin in half, but I haven't

lost weight on it, so go figure!!! LOL :-) I don't do super low though,

around 100 a day.

As in any eating plan, its all individual, my endo says every single case of

diabetes is different, thats why so difficult to treat.

Sam,

That's another reason that I haven't gone on the Atkins Diet... I don't want

to trade one problem -- high blood sugar -- for another -- high cholesterol.

I'm trying to make the lower fat choices, but I won't choose low fat if it

means higher sugar, such as low fat mayo. I can't say it doesn't work,

though, when trying to lose weight... several friends have lost large

amounts on it.

Yes some will produce horrible coughs, ask again you need it if you're a

diabetic, there is a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor (type

AT1)antagonist Cozaar is one of the drugs for this purpose and doesn't

have the side effects many can't handle with the ace inhibitor, your dr

should know these drugs, it might be your answer.see if theres a generic like

it, it protects kidneys too.

Hope this helps

headache I would think would be preferable to kidney failure, no? :-)

Hi Sandy,

There is nothing wrong with lowering your fat intake on Atkins if you wish.

You're right about the animal fats... they make you feel full and

satisfied.

The reason the typical high fat, high carb American diet causes heart

attacks is that it is the COMBINATION of fats and carbs that cause your

cholesterol to rise. When you eliminate the high level of carbs, your

cholesterol levels drop like crazy.

The whole diet was created to help people with heart problems. :)

She was referring to the low carb diet which lowered her cholesterol not

the ace inhibitor.

If you are at a good weight then you are very probably what some call a type

2 1/2 or a Type X diabetic.

Some type 2's - the ones who are overweight... have become resistant to

their own insulin. Losing weight helps the cells to become less resistant

so that helps their bg's get lower.

People who aren't overweight are more likely to be having a problem creating

enough insulin, rather than being resistant (altho that can figure into it

also)

Hope that makes some sense! :)

It's been shown again and again that Atkins lowers cholesterol. Read his

book to understand why.

check out Atkins_Support_List for some real people and their cholesterol

drops :)

Yes, my doctor did mention these drugs, but he said that the side effects

were headaches... I just didn't want to try a new drug. I never got to the

coughing stage with accuprill.... I just couldn't breathe.

i have a real problem with water, I gag on it, was always afraid of fluid

overload, a life threatening condition of too much fluid and not adequate

output.

Sure enough, while I was at the hospital for hernia repair surgery about 6

weeks ago, didn't I end up with fluid overload!!!!

The idiot dr's forgot to order my diuretics that I've been on for over 15

yrs!!! Lots of IV fluid though.

So now I know if I can't urinate, I stop drinking fluids!!! I was very

lethargic for 3 days and really don't remember too much.

I drink lots of diet soda, about 64 oz a day. with nutra sweet or splenda,

but still fluid, so goes to show I need to get over this!!! LOL

I've been on zestril for 15 yrs, so I don't have any kidney problems, except

during fluid overload, and no heart disease because I've been on estrogen

patches for years. I guess it really does protect the heart.

Hi Sandy,

I understand completely :) My father had severe hardening of the arteries

and was senile in his 60's. His brother dropped dead from a heart attack in

his 40's. My mother had CHF (congestive heart failure).

I was afraid of eating this way too :)

but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. :) Seeing those numbers drop,

and seeing them drop for others is exciting. The fact that Atkins is a

cardiologist is encouraging. And seeing my bg's normalize is wonderful -

might as well have a heart attack as be on dialysis - and high bg's cause

heart damage too.

Also, I work in a hospital and am seeing more and more of the doctors

following this way of eating, so thats motivational :) Just a few years ago

all the docs and dieticians were saying NO to Atkins - since they learned

different tricks too :) but now some of them are actually following it, many

others are saying welll... lets see how it works.

My suggestion to anyone starting is get checked out. If your heart,

kidneys, etc all check out healthy then try it for a month and see how you

feel. After 6 months get your labs checked again and see if they aren't

better. If you don't feel better, see good results, and have better labs,

go back to low fat :)

You can get all the same vitamins from veggies that you get from fruits,

just lose the sugar :) As to the grains, once you lose the weight you'll be

less insulin resistant and will be able to increase your carbs somewhat.

You can have some grains then. So the tight portion of the diet, when you

need the extra vitamins and minerals, is temporary.

I consider a good multi vitamin with minerals (I use Radience - found in my

grocery store) a good thing no matter what kind of diet you may be following

(or when you aren't dieting). I Take a multi vitamin, vit C, vit E, and a

fish oil capsule every day.

I don't take Atkins supplements. At first I did but after talking with

people who'd been on Atkins for years I discovered there was no need to pay

all that extra price :). Some people take potassium during that first

week - says it helps them get thru that punky carb withdrawel period :) Just

don't take more than the minimum dose pill (think it's like 99 mgm) cause it

is something you can take too much of.

Likewise with Vitamin A. I took 2 multivitimins a day during the two week

induction, then went to 1 a day after that.

Why the fish oil?? >>

My endo recommends this " cocktail " vitamin C 500mg , Vit E 800 i.u., folic

acid 1mg, 1 baby aspirin 81mg, 1 aspirin 325mg once a week (can't do this

one, my tummy) with multi vit every day

I used to take all kinds of supplements but don't work, was just wasting my

Two years ago my potassium level was " critically " high, the doctor's word, not

mine. Besides a delayed enema I was given copious amounts of some substance

intravenously as well as beaux coup needles in other parts of my body. It came

down in about 6 hours but it sure was an interesting time

No... not anymore. I haven't drunk much for a couple of years, so I don't

think that's the problem. That's interesting, though... I didn't know that.

I prefer Sweppes lime seltzer with an extra squeeze of lime.

When I was a practicing midwife, protein in the urine would mean that you

were protien starved, and we would put our clients on a turkey and lettuce

fast for a day, and it would clear up! Also to note that for me, pre

diagnosis and pre Atkins I had bladder and kidney infections almost

monthly. No more for me! (Thank heavens) I think that one unfamiliar

with Atkins buys into the myth that a person eats a pound of bacon and

butter a day! not so. I eat tons of veggies and some meat. If I ate like

people think I would hate it, especially in the summer!

Also are you getting enough water????? A person needs about 3 quarts of

water a day. I found that after I was diagnosed I was drinking less (not

as thirsty), so now I keep bottled water with me at all times and make sure

I am drinking those 3 quarts! Not enough water puts a strain on the

kidneys...it is better for the kidneys to be constantly filtering, as the

longer between elimination, the better chance for bacteria to grow!

Carol,

Forgive my ignorance... I didn't think that was possible -- unless one had

kidney disease. That's scary! I drink water all day long, but if anything,

I tend towards dehydration.

so many that I have to have regular dilations every 3 mos.
