Guest guest
Dear all, I was just wondering if I could have some advice please. I seem to have repeated difficulties when treating skin problems and particularly children with eczema. I feel this is something I really should beable to treat easily and I am hoping to get some more training for it (maybe Whipps Cross). However at the moment I wonder if anyone could give me any feedback. I have recently seen a 4 year old girl with ezcema. Started age 6 months and was extensive, it is now predominately on her legs and arms and is red, very itchy and very dry. Her skin in general is dry. Her mum does not tend to use steroid cream and for the last year has just concentrated on keeping it moisturised with Aveeno lotion. She scratches alot and the eczema tends to be worse in hot and humid weather. there is no family history of allergies. Her mum uses hypoallergenic products on her and a non-bio washing powder. She is generally a warm child and gets hot easily. They tried cutting out dairy for 1 month when she was 1 year old and this did not make a difference.. I have advised them to switch to goats milk products anyway as she is having a large amount of cows milk in her diet. I have recommeded Omega 3 oils (fish oil and this was all we could find that she would take - doesn;'t like the taste of other oils) Her prescription was: Echinacea glycerite 15 Stellaria media 20 Urticaria dioica 20 Chamomille glycerite 20 Plantago maj. 15 Rose syrup 20 Glycyrrhiza glabra 1:4 10 Althea rad. 15 135ml sig. 2.5ml bd Cream: Calendula cream 20g Stellaria cream 30g Hemp seed oil 15ml Neem i.o. 2ml Aloe vera gel 5ml Chamomille water 10ml 60g Apply bd or as needed. I was trying to concentrate on cooling and soothing. Anyway her mum has rung to say the eczema has flared up alot on her legs. She does not seem worried and thought that this might happen before it improves. However I am not quite sure if I should try a different tack or drop the dose. Do I need to look at further possible allergens ie. food. Any ideas please - I just find skin so hard! Guest guest
Hi sally I always give all eczema patients calendula and chamomile tea when they first come in case of flare ups. I tell them to bathe it with the cool tea, and it does help. I have to say, although I arm them with this flare ups don't often happen. The secret i learnt years ago was to make sure the " channels of elimination " are open first. Kidneys, liver, lungs and skin are all excretory organs as you know (sucking eggs here) so when you treat eczema you aim to make sure anything released from tissues has an exit. That sounds so incredibly unscientific. Maybe i should just go for it - I'm in a rush (3 pm patient just cancelled and I came online to find sometyhing urgently so brain might not be focussed) Ok - atopic eczema - start gently and don't flood the system with toxins (don't give me hard time for using such words at moment) deal with the allergy side of things (Urtica, chamomile) make sure kidneys, liver, lungs are working well - skin obviously is overloaded cleanse gently and slowly so as to avoid flooding system and having flare up cool, soothe, relieve itching, moisten, lubricate etc as appropriate symptomatic relief while you deal with underlying stuff lifestyle issues e.g washing powder - avoid Ecover - it's based on dairy produce be careful of oat baths, I was trained that oats soften the skin- I had one little chap years ago and his main allergy was oats (breastfeeding mum ate porridge daily) and the wash covered him in a horrible flare-up. We found out what his problem was though. In fact he turned out to be coeliac. Sorry, I haven't got more time at moment. I'm sure someone else will give you more help, but I'd consider teh tea for her flare-up. best wishes ======================================== Message Received: Nov 01 2007, 10:19 AM To: ukherbal-list Cc: Subject: RE: help please Dear all, I was just wondering if I could have some advice please. Guest guest
Hi , > washing powder - avoid Ecover - it's based on dairy produce > I've never heard this before; would you explain? Does this hold true for all of Ecover's products? Their liquid laundry soap, liquid dish soap, etc.? Guest guest
Hi Sally just to echo what says about elimination and detoxification. I do pretty well with eczema, I nearly always use galium for the lymphatics (but calendula is a good alternative), and for the liver berberis aquifolium for adults and dandelion root for children. I usually use either trifolium or viola tricolor, plus matricaria or urtica. and, if necessary a nervine. Obviously diet is also very important. My most recent case has improved markedly after only 3 weeks of medicine, (and no cream, as I was out of stock) , so I'm a happy herbalist today! Oh and if you can get round to making it - elderflower ointment is excellent - I made some for myself when I used to suffer, and it was great - I don't know where I got the idea, I think it was probably one of those lightbulb moments, (infused oil and beeswax) Sally O > > > > > > > Dear all, > I was just wondering if I could have some advice please. Guest guest
look, you don't need to be long-winded about eczema. 1. do an allergy test or refer to somebody who can. It can be set off by the wierdest things. If the condition started at weaning, look at milk and wheat as primary allergens. otherwise - anything. 2. always treat the gut. 5 or 10ml. of agrimonia in 100 is often enough to seal a leaky gut. 3. make sure bowel, liver, kidneys and lungs are in good working order BEFORE adding Urtica, Arctium or whatever pokey thing you fancy. 4. use nervines. 5. provide an external wash or herbs to add to the bath eg stellaria, matricaria, calendula 6. add Urtica fol slowly and carefully by increments of 5ml in 100 after 3 or 4 weeks, and once you are satisfied 3 is effective. 7. always use viola tric. for itching internally and externally. This hasn't failed me once in 12 years of full-time practice - that's a lot of eczema! nne oh and of course essential fatty acids and zinc internally in vast quantities. nne Last MNIMH Medical Herbalist. Guest guest
it is very important to TAPER off Prednisone. Just going cold turkey isn't good from all I have read. In the meantime there are things your husband can do to boost his WBC. I put down what I did and I have been EN free for over a year. My health has never been better. Prednisone is a suppressor of immune system so it makes sense that he would have the rash and infection.below I have cut and pasted what I do. I hope you find it helpful. IT IS A LOT OF INFORMATION. This comes from many years of experience and trial and error. See what applies to him and do your own research. *******Here's what I have discovered: Adrenal Fatigue is a very real illness. One of its symptoms is EN, rashes and numerous others. If you go to this site http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/ there is a questionaire, which is a poor mans adrenal fatigue test, that's for free, he also sells a book, which is wonderful and inside his book is a test to determine what level of fatigue you are: mild to extreme. I suggest buying his book. It is only 14 bucks. There are saliva tests you can do, which are very accurate, the blood tests are not. This will cost money. I always encourage people to get the saliva tests so they can be as accurate as possible. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW AMAZING I FEEL ON HIS SUPPLEMENTS. NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENT. He talks about prednisone and its effects long term.THE PRODUCTS I TAKE FOR ADRENAL FATIGUE:FROM FUTURE FORMULATIONS, LLC: http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/ ADRENAL REBUILDER 1PILL 3X A DAYADRENAL C FORMULA 1PILL 3X A DAYSUPER ADRENAL STRESS FORMULA 1PILL 3X A DAYHERBAL ADRENAL SUPORT FORMULA 15 DROPS 2 times a dayCost for me on my adrenal fatigue supplements: 150 bucks for 2 months supply.WHEATGRASS JUICE is a huger booster of immune system and WBC. Probably one of the best. He will feel better immediately. I TRY to drink FRESH wheatgrass juice at least 3 times a week. I drink 3oz. When I was really sick I drank it five days a week for a month till my legs healed. Then tapered to 3 times a week. You have to get accustom to the taste. I can drink it straight because I love it, but at first I had to drink it with apple juice. He can go to any healthfood, even some Jimbos and juice chain stores have Wheatgrass juice. I don't know where you live. Start with 1oz and build up to 3ozs. If he can't tolerate the taste ask them to mix the fresh wheatgrass juice with fresh apple juice and lemon. It tastes wonderful.*NOTE: SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT AS EXTREMELY FATIGUED AS I AM OR AS HYPOTHYROID SO THIS IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO FIGURE OUT OR RULE OUT WHERE YOU ARE.**ALSO WITH ADRENAL FATIGUE IT TAKES YEARS FOR ADRENALS TO BECOME FATIGUED, SO IT TAKES TIME TO HEAL. ROUGHLY 2 YEARS. SO THIS IS SOMEWHAT OF A LIFESTYLE SHIFT.However, I feel terrific on these supplements and I couldn't imagine being without them.THYROID: Thyroid TSH levels. I found out I was very Hypothyroid which is connected to Adrenal Fatigue and all the systems not working properly together due to body being overburdened with stress and more. I take Armour, but since the swine flu outbreak Armour is in short supply so most of us have had to go back to generic Synthroid which is better than nothing but it isn't as good as Armour which addresses both TSH 3 and TSH 4.ESTROGEN DOMINANCE (both men and women suffer from this): which is also connected to Adrenals, thyroid and basically the very unhealthy environments we live in today. Currently, I am going through an estrogen detox. Avoiding soy, coffee, caffein, red meats, and anything with estrogen in it. Going as organic as possible is most important to eliminate estrogen. It is pretty amazing when you really study this how much estrogen we ingest. Even men. This too seems to be an epidemic since we have hormonally inflated our foods, dairy, bottle waters, etc. For me I am detoxing from too much estrogen using a certain program. The results have been very promising. It is very easy to get an estrogen test to see what your levels are at. VITAMIN D AND ALL SKIN VITAMINS: There are many great Integrated MD's who can do a full nutritional panel (costs a lot) to find out if you are deficient in any of the skin vitamins. I take 4,000 units of Vit D, as well as Omega 3's in conjunction with my Adrenal supplement.sand finally if he's willing...GLUTEN FREE DIET: This will help detox the body from additional stress due to foods which can trigger EN as well. I would try six months gluten free just to see how he feels. ***************I am not a medical doctor, just an expert on having EN and knowing what works for me. After spending tens of thousands of dollars on this illness, I know what works and what doesn't (for me)It is of my opinion if more people would really take time to understand the adrenals and how we can exhaust them: through stress, loss, chemicals, hormone overload or underload, foods, etc we could really get on top of this EN issue.Sadly, most MD's do not take Adrenal Fatigue seriously. They do, however, oddly enough, understand Adrenal Failure, which is Addissons Disease. So... go figure, they acknowledge the failure of adrenals, but not them fatiguing to failure. Classic example of not understanding what you don't study or deal with.Hopefully, this information will prove useful to him and you can find some peace and some relief, like I have.PeaceML GemmillEN 1975below is cut and past on how to boost WBC I just got the below off google. I would only use organic and wash you veggies since pesticides will wreak havoc on his immune system.Step 1Balance every meal for a healthy diet. Diet is the single most important aspect to keeping your body healthy. White blood cells are produced and function at their peak when you fill your plate 2/3 full of vegetables, beans and whole grains. The rest should be lean meat or fish. Step 2Eat the right vegetables. Certain varieties of vegetables help increase white blood cells more than others. These include broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, pumpkin and carrots. Step 3Exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. You don't have to do a physical workout, but make sure you keep your body active for 30 minutes. That could mean gardening or walking around a mall. Keep your blood pumping and your muscles working to increase white blood cells. Step 4Drink green tea. Green tea helps stimulate the production of white blood cells. Decaffeinated green tea is better for your body, and 1 or 2 cups a day should do the trick. Step 5Take a multivitamin specific to your age and gender. You don't have to take a pharmacy full of supplements to improve your white blood cell count. A simple multivitamin formulated for you will help substantially. Zinc is important, so make sure it includes a healthy amount of zinc. ML GemmillWriter - Creative Ideatorlittlesumo@... I'm not sure but it is red rash. I found out I was very Hypothyroid which is connected to Adrenal Fatigue and all the systems not working properly together due to body being overburdened with stress and more. ML GemmillWriter - Creative Ideatorlittlesumoearthlink (DOT) net I'm not sure but it is red rash. Guest guest
I was taking 20mg for week one, 40mg for week 2, and 60 for the 3rd week, which I never got to. My neck was so tight, swollen feeling, along with blurry vision, and rage, drop of a pin rage. I called the dr. and tried to find out out to quickly down dose the pred. They told me to stop taking it immediately. To this day, my neck gets that same tight, swollen feeling. I did know about the tapering off of it, and was surprised they had me stop, but I did try to dose down at a very quick rate. I just hate pred and would rather deal with the EN. Of couse for the first week, I felt no pain anywhere in my body, sort of a 18 year old feeling, invincible in a way. I took my stairs at home 2 at a time with no pain. I loved that part. They do, however, oddly enough, understand Adrenal Failure, which is Addissons Disease. So... go figure, they acknowledge the failure of adrenals, but not them fatiguing to failure. Classic example of not understanding what you don't study or deal with.Hopefully, this information will prove useful to him and you can find some peace and some relief, like I have.Peace ML Gemmill EN 1975 below is cut and past on how to boost WBC I just got the below off google. I would only use organic and wash you veggies since pesticides will wreak havoc on his immune system. Step 1 Balance every meal for a healthy diet. Diet is the single most important aspect to keeping your body healthy. White blood cells are produced and function at their peak when you fill your plate 2/3 full of vegetables, beans and whole grains. The rest should be lean meat or fish. Step 2 Eat the right vegetables. Certain varieties of vegetables help increase white blood cells more than others. These include broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, pumpkin and carrots. Step 3 Exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. You don't have to do a physical workout, but make sure you keep your body active for 30 minutes. That could mean gardening or walking around a mall. Keep your blood pumping and your muscles working to increase white blood cells. Step 4 Drink green tea. Green tea helps stimulate the production of white blood cells. Decaffeinated green tea is better for your body, and 1 or 2 cups a day should do the trick. Step 5 Take a multivitamin specific to your age and gender. You don't have to take a pharmacy full of supplements to improve your white blood cell count. A simple multivitamin formulated for you will help substantially. Zinc is important, so make sure it includes a healthy amount of zinc. ML Gemmill Writer - Creative Ideator littlesumo@earthlin k.net I'm not sure but it is red rash. Guest guest
Debbie you should really look into the adrenal fatigue. I too had a stiff neck for the longest time. I ordered Dr. 's book, took the test and bingo, I learned I was extremely fatigued. I ordered his products and experienced relief within the first week. Guest guest
Fresh is always the best. And drinking it right a way is the best, too. Like I said, if he can't stomach the taste have them put it in fresh apple juice with a touch of lemon. It's wonderful. Some people call this drink a grasshopper. start with one ounce week one, two ounces week 2 and 3 ounces week 3 and just try to be consistent for a month. Then go to 3 - 2 times a week for maintenance. His skin will look terrific.I put the health food stores down too, because another life saver is Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother in it. I take 1 oz in 8 oz of purified water and a little organic honey, molasses, maple syrup to taste. And when my lumps break out (they haven't for a year), I soak paper towels in Braggs ACV and wrap them around my legs while they are elevated and my lumps go away very fast. If his ankles swell, like some folks do with EN wrap those as well. It's a little stinky, but it WORKS. So I am very used to the smell, because I think Braggs is a miracle product. Trader Joes has a great list at their help desk of all gluten free products so it makes it easy to shop. Also a health food store that is rather large like wholefoods does too, although wholefoods can be a little expensive you might find some great gluten free deli foods for when he gets really hungry. Anything green is wonderful-veggies etc. Quinoa is the best and so easy to cook and tons of different tasty kinds. Beans are great source of protein, too and chicken (organic farm raised) is also good. If you have a moment order that book from Dr. or take his survey online for possibility of Adrenal fatigue www.adrenalfatigue.org I tell you I have spent thousands on supplements. Literally, thousands, and his products WORK. His book is terrific, too. They address everything someone with EN and rashes, swelling, skin issues, has. I get the entire line of stress and adrenal products. They usually ship in 3 days because he is in Arizona. If your husband needs a doctor that thinks like Dr. , just call their help line and ask for a referral. But I strongly suggest for the next 6 months just try this system and see what happens. I keep a photo diary and calendar so I can see what works for me. This way when your husband is well he can help others by passing on all these great solutions to others who need help too. 3 links below show a list of places that possibly server fresh wheatgrass juice. Call a head to find out. To this day, my neck gets that same tight, swollen feeling.I did know about the tapering off of it, and was surprised they had me stop, but I did try to dose down at a very quick rate. I just hate pred and would rather deal with the EN. Of couse for the first week, I felt no pain anywhere in my body, sort of a 18 year old feeling, invincible in a way. I took my stairs at home 2 at a time with no pain. I found out I was very Hypothyroid which is connected to Adrenal Fatigue and all the systems not working properly together due to body being overburdened with stress and more. ************ ***I am not a medical doctor, just an expert on having EN and knowing what works for me. The rest should be lean meat or fish.Step 2Eat the right vegetables. Certain varieties of vegetables help increase white blood cells more than others. These include broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, pumpkin and carrots.Step 3Exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. You don't have to do a physical workout, but make sure you keep your body active for 30 minutes. That could mean gardening or walking around a mall. Keep your blood pumping and your muscles working to increase white blood cells.Step 4Drink green tea. Green tea helps stimulate the production of white blood cells. Decaffeinated green tea is better for your body, and 1 or 2 cups a day should do the trick.Step 5Take a multivitamin specific to your age and gender. You don't have to take a pharmacy full of supplements to improve your white blood cell count. A simple multivitamin formulated for you will help substantially. Zinc is important, so make sure it includes a healthy amount of zinc.ML GemmillWriter - Creative Ideatorlittlesumo@earthlin k.netOn Jun 17, 2010, at 8:11 AM, Ereeny wrote:I'm not sure but it is red rash. Guest guest
I found this on internet. Maybe you want to read it.... Its clear now that (why) normal vinigar doesn't work.Greetings,G RSent from my iPod Debbie you should really look into the adrenal fatigue. I too had a stiff neck for the longest time. When I learned it was one of the symptoms of Adrenal fatigue, along with rashes, EN and swollen ankles that is when I looked into it. I ordered Dr. 's book, took the test and bingo, I learned I was extremely fatigued. I ordered his products and experienced relief within the first week. I have now been on his products over a year and feel great. No stiff neck, no EN, no swollen ankles, and my energy is amazing. His site is www.adrenalfatigue.org I swear by his products, books and Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother in it.This route is far less expensive and far healthier then all the drugs the doctors love to put us on.I thought I would say something since you mentioned a sore neck that won't go away, which is a sign of adrenal fatigue.Anyway, best, ML Gemmill I was taking 20mg for week one, 40mg for week 2, and 60 for the 3rd week, which I never got to. My neck was so tight, swollen feeling, along with blurry vision, and rage, drop of a pin rage. I called the dr. and tried to find out out to quickly down dose the pred.
