My 91 year old grandmother has been in the hospital for almost a month and they had expected her to pass away two weeks ago, due to congestive heart failure, fluid on her lungs, Alzheimer's, and other assorted problems. I think the fact that she had robust health almost all of her life (walked for excercise almost every day until she was about 88) is helping her body continue to hang on against the organ failures. At this point, they have just been treating her pain and giving her oxygen treatments. We've been taking turns staying with her day and night. Today, they are sending her home just to make her comfortable until the inevitable. During the times she's awake, she still remembers us, but short term memory is almost non-existent after 2-3 minutes. It's really hard to see a grandparent change in this way. However, I feel fortunate that she is one of three grandparents still living and I have been able to know them into my thirties. Joe D. Deaver Age 34, Type I 17 years joe@... This is a most difficult time. We share the pain of this difficult time. Just make sure you constantly tell her how much you love her, even if she doesn't remember who you are.
