Antibiotics for bronchitis?

My three year old nephew picked up a nasty respiratory virus. It spread quickly

and everyone in my family caught it, including me of course. I've been sick for

going on two weeks tomorrow. Feeling like crap and tired of being sick so I

will probably go to the doc tomorrow. I know I've got bronchitis but no fevers.

My question is for you veterans - what is the rationale for always putting

asthmatics on antibiotics for viral bronchitis? Everything I read says they

only work for bacterial infections. Can someone explain this to me? Thanks

I used to take antibiotics every month for a whole year for sore throat infections. What I learnt is that the more I took antibiotics, the weaker my immunity is. My theory is that the rationale for giving you antibiotics for viral bronchitis is to prevent a secondary bacterial infection, to which you may be more vulnerable during the viral attack. The other possibility is that they just give it to you because they think that you, like so many other people, simply expect to be given an antibiotic every time you get sick. It's easier to hand them over than to explain why they won't help and that there is no drug that can help you with the virus.Also, they say when you have a respiratory infection, if you aren't feeling considerably better 7 days after the onset of symptoms, you should go to the doctor at that time. Two weeks may be longer than
