Guest guest
In a message dated 11/14/04 7:27:46 AM, Dan summarizes various people and writes: << " imo, contraceptives and first-term abortion have freed women from the tyranny of their bodies, and allowed us the same sexual freedom(s) always enjoyed by men. " Dan: It does always come down to hedonism, doesn't it? But hedonism is not a good enough reason from the pro-life pov (my own opinion is that the " virgin-whore " dichotomy was probably a better solution to the problem you point to). Anybody else? Can anybody find an argument that might move the pro-lifer whose opinion is that (1) the fetus (and for that matter the zygote) is as much a human being as you or I, and (2) that there is no personal " right to self-determination " held by the individual as individual? >> This doesn't address your question specifically, but sexual urges are not hedonism. (I realize you are not saying that, but you have repeated the mantra.) They are as natural as breathing, and as basic to human existence. Calling them *hedonistic*, that is, broadly self-indulgent and ego-driven, is part of the problem and one that has been fused into the basic response of many institutions which oppose abortion. It's a bit mind-bogling to assert that having children is a wonderful, God-given thing, but that the getting of children should be in the dark, unpleasant, and sinful. lightly, lightly, phoebe ************************************************************** Oh say does that Star-Spangled banner still wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? ***************************************************************
