Guest guest
Hi All. Well my asthma is playing up terribly but I have no idea why! I appear to have no infection, no colds, coughs, aliens or recognisable triggers. I'm puffing like a politician lifting his wallet and my chest feels like someone heavier than they should be is sitting on me! There's not too much wheeze but a distinct lack of breath, can't seem to cough much and movement is a struggle. So is anyone else suffering? Is it the time of year, what pollens are around in September? Or is is just my good fortune to feel like burst bagpipes at the moment? I'm considering upping my prednisolone to 40mgs and increasing my nebs, but until I identify what the root cause is, I can't do much more. So any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Many thanks. Cheers, Mike (Chip) Chapman Cornwall. UK
Guest guest
Hi Chip! You cracked me up. Thank you! I very much needed a good chuckle this morning. I am one of those lowly Americans. Like , I am in the southeastern part of the country (in the northern end of Georgia) in the Appalachian mountain foothills. Everyone I know has had a very hard time this summer. This includes people I correspond with from several areas of the world. So, there seems to be something in the air. Literally. I have bronchomalacia and severe vocal cord dysfunction along with my asthma, and it has been the asthma that I have been fighting this summer. On a good note, I seem to be able to fight the asthma from home. The brochomalacia puts me in the hospital (I call it the spa) for several days at a time. I had a bronchoscopic inspection of my lungs two years ago now. The found a mycoplasma pneumonia which required a six month antibiotic course. Before the antibiotics, I had times when my lungs felt and sounded just like what you are describing. I had one doc comment that she didn't need the stethoscope to listen to me. Since the antibiotics, I have not inflamed or conjested to that point again. I also spent two years on a daily (55 - 65mg) dose of prednisone. You must break that cycle. The prednisone has caused many health issues and generally mad a wreck of my body. The conjestion itself can be contributing to a vicious cycle. Are you coughing up little hard balls? I have a problem with developing very deep conjestion that can be nearly impossible for me to get rid of. I used to go through tons of medications and had to have my husband beat on my back (imagine giving permission for your spouse to beat you!). I have found that an accapella device is extremely effective. Here is a link to a fact sheet which explains it fairly well: http://www.cmamaine.com/_pdf/Acapellafactsheet.pdf , and here is a picture http://www.smiths-medical.com/catalog/bronchial-hygiene/acapella/acapella.html . You should definitely ask your doctor about acquiring one. It does a very good job of breaking up that very deep mucus and helping me divulge of it. Again, it is very nice to meet you! You really will like this group. I have learned so much here, and we all understand the daily challenges of asthma and other lung conditions. I don't know if you have much ragweed pollen in the UK but I'm having a fit with it here in the US. I live in the NE part of the state of Tennessee. Another culprit could be mold if it's very damp there. Here in my area, it's been hot and somewhat humid with temps in the 90-95 F range (32-35 C). We have had air quality alerts for ozone the past couple of days. Yesterday I was out with my mom and breathing that air was a chore-like breathing through a partially clogged straw. It burned my lungs but I coped the best I could. I'm a bit congested today and not relishing the thought of being outdoors this afternoon, but we have a church picnic with our kids that I don't want to miss. I have a portable nebulizer and my inhaler so I'll be ok., Co-ModeratorTo: Asthma Group <asthma >Sent: Saturday, September 3, 2011 7:09 AMSubject: Troubles Hi All.
