Guest guest
Ross, A good place to start is perhaps Donna Pogliano's book 'A Primer On Prostate Cancer' a comprehensive guide to treatments and protocols. I have loaned many copies to the newly diagnosed and I can only say that the feedback I get is that the book is indispensable. A lady telephoned me just the other day and said that she was able to tell a doctor things even he didn't know because she had read it in the book. I would also look at Terry Herbert's site YANA ( You Are Not Alone ) and see the section 'A Strange Place' . Also take a look at the site below. Woollam's ICon Magazine. Above all don't get prostate cancer anxiety...............most of us live with prostate cancer and not from it. I would wager that at 73 years of age you will die of old age rather than prostate cancer. Reply-to: ProstateCancerSupport To: ProstateCancerSupport Sent from the Internet I am new to this group. I am the owner of a yahoo computer support group with 1900 members and 76000 posts so this was the first place I looked for support. In a yearly physical my MD found a nodule in my prostate and I don't have an appointment with a urologist till August 5. I am 73 years old, my wife and I don't have any family and she isn't well and I don't want to discuss this with her any more than I have to. My father died of colon cancer when he was 55 so I have had a colonoscopy every 5 years and had polyps removed I was clear the last couple of times. My stepfather died of prostate cancer and I know a little about the condition. I have had a digital exam and a PSA every year and my PSA has always been low. I got the results of this year PSA Friday and it was 0.50 so I have not had a rapid rise. I presume when I see the urologist he will give me an exam and schedule an ultrasound and biopsy. I am here because it is tough when you get news like this and you don't have anyone to talk to about it. Ross
Guest guest
Ross, Let me get this right. You are 73 and have had a recent PSA test which has come back at 0.5 ng/ml ? Am I reading this right or are you missing something out? Subsequent to this: > will give me an exam and schedule an ultrasound and biopsy. I'd say go for the ultrasound and perhaps go for a bone scintigraphy scan if you are very concerned. However, hold off the biopsy until your other results are back. A PSA of 0.5 in normal circumstances is nothing. Indeed a PSA of 5 -6 ng/ml for a man of your age would be regarded as normal. > I am new to this group. I am the owner of a yahoo computer support Perhaps you could tell us the name of the support group - I have had my share of computer problems that is for sure ! Cheers, Sammy. Guest guest
Sammy I have a physical every year at this time and my MD does a PSA. I have had an enlarged prostate for years and have been taking Flomax for five years. Last week during my exam the doctor said he felt a nodule in my prostate and scheduled me for an ultrasound and it was to be sent to the urologist but when I got to the hospital the ultrasound technician called the urologist and he said not to do a ultrasound until he examined me. The urologist made me an appointment for August 5. Friday my MD got the results of my PSA and I double checked it and it was 0.50. I can't remember what my PSA was over the years but I was always told it was low. Guest guest
Hi Ross, Sorry to hear of your, understandable, concern. I doubt that with the low PSA you report that you will have an aggressive form of prostate cancer, but it is as well to check it out. You might like to pick up a copy of the protocol; that Donna Pogliano, a leading activist wrote with Dr Strum and which they are trying to distribute as widely as possible. You can find a copy here http://www.yananow.net/DonnasDoctor.html has given you some good advice, although he forgot to give you the URLs. The Internet version of Donna's Primer can be found here http://www.phoenix5.org/Basics/DPprimer0918.html And my small booklet here http://www.yananow.net/StrangePlace/index.html All the best Terry Herbert in sunny Kalk Bay, South Africa Diagnosed '96: Age 54: Stage T2b: PSA 7.2: Gleason 3+3=6: No treatment. Guest guest
Welcome to wonder. Most of us here are PCa survivors. Your post brings up an old query of mine.... What about that biopsy? Is there a chance it'll do more harm than good? Will pricking little holes in the capsule release cancer cells into the blood stream? Into the lymphatic system? I guess I'm just not sure about that, concerning biopsy. Ross wrote: > I am new to this group.
