Dear Friends,

I have pseudotumor cerebri and a shunt. I was decompressed twice. My first

decompression failed because I needed a shunt at that point but my first doctor

did not realize this. I was underdecompressed and my pressure was chronically

high due to the pseudotumor. I have had a few LP's now with Dr. Bolognese and

his staff. I usually have high pressure at the LP so taking off some fluid helps

me but only for a day or a little more. With pseudotumor, my system is so tight

that I notice the slightest increase as soon as it starts again. But when my

pressure is raised due to a shunt problem and the fluid is removed, I feel

better instantly. My eyes will stop hurting and the noises in my ears stop and

the headache subsides. But as the fluid is remade, the symptoms come right back.

My shunt is my lifeline. High pressure for me seems to be about 190 and up. I

think my highest pressure was 230 and that was at my very first LP. I had a

pseudomenengeocele then from raised pressure and the CSF was pooling under the

patch from my first decompression.

So, when the fluid was removed, I felt like a new person. But, the symptoms

returned so I started taking Diamox again which for me helps provide the same

relief as an LP.

I used to wonder about herniation from the LP's even after I was decompressed

but they use a very tiny needle and it is a highly controlled procedure. You

have to trust the person performing the LP.
