Guest guest
Here's the latest newsletter from The Lewy Body Society in the UK: Newsletter 8 November 2007 Apologies Some of you who have viewed the website recently will know that I had the bad luck to break my ankle a couple of months ago. It has been an exercise in patience and lesson in empathy. I am happy to say that I am now back on my feet again. Unfortunately clearing the backlog of LBS work did not kept pace with my healing and I apologise for any delays there have been in getting back to you. My time on crutches taught me that you get there in the end, it just takes a very long time. Welcome, Marzena. The Lewy Body Society is delighted to welcome Marzena Kurzawa, recently of the University of Warsaw, Poland as the first sponsored LBS PhD student. Marzena is a 24 year old geneticist who will be spending the next 4 years working on the molecular genetics and functional genomics of Dementia with Lewy bodies at Newcastle University under the supervision of Prof Chinnery and Dr . Her scientific interests are focused on the molecular basis of human genetic diseases and the role of genetics in neurological disorders such as DLB. Earlier this year she received the prestigious Ernst Schering Foundation Scholarship which enabled her to carry out a research project at Newcastle. In her spare time Marzena likes to read thrillers and keeps fit by jogging. More about Marzena in the next issue. LBS Christmas cards Artist Nikky Corker, who is a dedicated member of the LBS, raising money and serving on the management committee, has designed and donated two exclusive Christmas cards which we are offering for sale on the website. These charming cards come in packets of 12 with 6 of each design. The message is: Season's Greetings. Price is £4.50, including P & P, on the website, or £3.50 in person, if possible. Supplies are limited and going quickly. This is a wonderful way to spread awareness of the disease. Clever Nikky not only designed and produced these unique cards, she persuaded the gallant members of the Wetherby, Yorkshire Lions Club to pay for the printing. We are much obliged. Spots for Sale The first ever Lewy Body Society Auction of Spotty Things is currently being catalogued and will be online in the next few weeks. Items for auction include women's clothing and accessories, men's accessories and things for the home. About 30 " Lewy body " objects will be on offer, with the winner being the highest bid received by the closing date, which will be the same for all items. Jacqui On Sunday 16 September LBS member Jacqui Cannon ran in the Liverpool 10k Women Challenge and raised nearly £400 for the Lewy Body Society. Jacqui is also a LBS star. An early and enthusiastic supporter, she has raised money and distributed brochures and talked to people as well as literally throwing her body into it the cause. She has just agreed to be the North West Regional Director of the LBS. Her account of the Challenge can be found on the website. Spare Change Another first for the Lewy Body Society! On Friday 28 and Saturday 29 September LBS members and friends in Bishops' Stortford, Herts collected for the charity outside the local branch of Waitrose. Despite some typically miserable wet autumn weather an astonishing £700 was collected from generous passersby. Although ignorance of DLB is the challenge we face, it was surprising and heartening to hear how many people did know of it. It's a start. Please get in touch if you would like to organise a local collection day in your area and we will tell you about gaining permission and supply you with buckets and stickers. It is an easy way to raise money for the charity. All you need are enough willing people. The money raised from just this collection will cover the cost of sending 1000 brochures out to doctors. Making ourselves known The LBS has proudly exhibited at 2 important conferences in the past month. From October 14-18 we had a stall at the International Psychogeriatric Association's Silver Jubilee Congress in Osaka, Japan, where our distinctive blue and white spots caught everybody's eye. 2500 delegates from all over the world attended and probably half of them came to our display. People from 12 countries around the world expressed interest in starting Lewy body organisations in their own countries. Japan Members of the LBS Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel, Jane Byrne, Ian Mc and O'Brien also made an impact with their well- attended presentations. We also had a popular stall at the second UK Dementias Conference on 5-7 November in Harrogate, where we were given enthusiastic support and congratulations by our many visitors. Harrogate One final pitch What about Christmas carolling in aid of the Lewy Body Society this year? Let us know and we'll send you a collection tin and stickers. Best wishes to all,
Guest guest
, no need to apologize. We are all just glad you are able to get around again. I am sure it still gets sore at times with over use, so do continue to let it heal. You are important first.
