Guest guest
I have asthma, and I get the flu, and the pneumonia shot, the worst I had as far as side effects, was maybe one day of feeling a little off, or just went home and took a nap, and then nothing else. Don't know what to tell you about the needle thing. I have had so many shots, and blood drawn in my life, never used to bother me either, I notice the older I get, now I find it distasteful, don't know why. But, I just turn my head and think good thoughts, and you know what, it is usually over, and I most of the time, still waiting for them to do it and it is already done, also, anymore I don't seem even feel it. My doctor put me through xrays and blood work, which didn't show much of anything. She put me on Advair & Ventolin and those have helped a great deal. My question is, is getting a flu shot generally a good thing when you have asthma? I'm debating if I should get one this year. I'm generally fairly healthy, but have an extreme fear of needles. Guest guest
The one year I had hte flu vaccination, it made my asthma far worse. It could be coincidental that it was only about 6-8 weeks after I'd moved to this area, which I've since found out is on the edge of one of the worst parts of the UK for asthma and allergies, but I've still refused to hve a flu vaccine since, and have been okay. Guest guest
Could be, your body was still getting used to the new enviornment, and maybe with the added shot it was just too much at that particular time. But, maybe just the flu shot also, that is something to really think about. To: asthma Sent: Saturday, August 20, 2011 12:14 PMSubject: Re: Flu Shots & my Intro The one year I had hte flu vaccination, it made my asthma far worse. Guest guest
Hey Becky, I've felt absolutely fine this time. No reactions, no problems. Last year, I felt rough for about 3 or 4 days. I have had shots, blood draws, and I'm on insulin for diabetes, so needles don't bother me. If the nasal spray stuff works for you, go for it.To: "asthma " <asthma >Sent: Saturday, August 20, 2011 12:01 PMSubject: Re: Flu Shots & my Intro I have asthma, and I get the flu, and the pneumonia shot, the worst I had as far as side effects, was maybe one day of feeling a little off, or just went home and took a nap, and then nothing else. Guest guest
They recommend that those of us with these kinds of illnesses get a shot. I had a bad reaction to the last shot given to me by my regular doctor. My allergist said there is a way to test ahead of time to see if you would have an adverse effect. If you don't, even I would recommend getting the shot.  Hi, I'm Becky, about 3 weeks ago, I had an Asthma attack and have been having a hard time breathing since. Guest guest
Thanks for all the info. I think I am going to hold out a little longer on the flu shot. Right now I can get the shot through work for free since it helps their numbers, but not the nasal spray. I just applied for a new job that would actually have medical benefits and then I could just get it through my doc. The one time I did the nasal spray, I did feel sick for a few days after, and I still got sick through out the year. Peace, Becky (Chicago, IL)In the beginning, the universe was created. Guest guest
Even though I had the shot, I still did gt the flu, but, it was nothing like it would have been without the shot. I also had that really bad flu, tha was going around, and that was miserable, really miserable, but, of course they didn't have a shot for that then, I don't think. So you still maybe will get it, but, it does make a difference, at least it did for me.To: asthma Sent: Sunday, August 21, 2011 2:55 AMSubject: Re: Flu Shots & my Intro Thanks for all the info. Guest guest
With asthma, you really should get the flu shot. People with asthma are more susceptible to the flu or other respiratory illnesses. If you decide to get the flu shot, it is not recommended that you get the nasal vaccine because that is made with a live virus vs an inactivated virus in the shots. Your family members that live with you should also avoid the nasal form because the virus can be "shed" if they sneeze or what not and you may find yourself with the flu. A large number of people who fell victim to the H1N1 flu were people with pre-existing respiratory conditions...so if you can, its advisable to get the shots. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice everyone. I did end up sucking it up and getting the shot. (my parents are still in shock that I went to get a shot on my own without being dragged kicking and screaming.) I'm not to worried about the swine flu, think I actually caught a very mild case a few years ago, I'd been at a conference and a group of us managed to get it. Kind of worked out well, we could all be miserable together. I work at a drug store with no health insurance (not enough hours), so I am exposed to a lot of things, but can't afford to go to the doc a lot, in the end the thought of a bunch of sick people coming in to find something for their colds/flu made me opt to get it. Though that is the one perk to working at a drug store, Free Flu Shots. I've still been having a lot of breathing problems. But at least I can get out of bed and get things done now. Though my coworkers are still checking on me a lot, making sure I am taking my inhaler and that I am not turning blue. Peace, Becky (Chicago, IL)In the beginning, the universe was created. Guest guest
Just a reminder...If you have had a previous noticeable reaction to a H1N1 vaccine, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US advises that you not have another vaccination. When I had it back during Swine Flu epidemic in Michigan 40 years ago, I almost had to be hospitalized from the vaccination. Turned out I had underlying autoimmune issues that had yet to be diagnosed and my current rheumy felt that's why I had such a hard time. Some folks with autoimmune disease can tolerate the vaccine, but making that decision should be discussed with the physician who knows your medical history best. Guest guest
Hi Becky. Your personal best will change over time. You can increase it through control of your asthma, through cardiovascular excercise, through control of your allergies, and through breathing exercises and routines such as yoga. So many factors go into what your personal best is. Don't over analyze it. For some people their personal best is in the 300's and some is in the 500's. It is what it is.MadelineFrom: Becky S To: asthma Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 12:38 PMSubject: Re: Re: Flu Shots & my Intro Ok. Will do. Can your personal best change over time?
