Guest guest
I have tried most of the ppi's and none of them did much. Anyway I have tried the pepcid complete from target. It is chewable tastes good and really does work. And reasonable. Don't usually eat too late, helps a lot when sleeping, also sleep on two or three pillows, it raises my head and upper chest so the gerd doesn't come up while I sleep. I know what foods really make me sick, and those I avoid, always, other things I can still eat. I think the worst thing for me is pepperoni, haven't eaten that in years, don't even want to now. Do you know anything about it? 2011/8/11 piaybyear You are so right Madeline. I have been having the worst acid reflux for about a year now. Anyhow went to see my gastro and after listening to my complaints he told me to take two nexiums (40mg.). At first when he told me a month or so earlier I refused to and told me that I was not looking for early onset of alzheimers. Also the other side effect is bones and I am not looking for additional problems. I already have osteoporosis from all the prednisone I've been on. Have been taking it daily for 14 1/2 yrs. already and hopefully will be on it for the rest of my life. Anyhow, I broke down with that second visit and took two nexiums the next day. Well, I had the worst stomach cramps and diarrhea and when I finally called gastro's office I was told to only take one pill a day. Meanwhile, when I told my rheumy this she told me exactly what you said and also said to me that Sjogren's dries out the mucus membranes thereby causing the stomach to sometimes have no acid in it because of the severe dryness and to never take more than the 40mg. a day. Only reason why I'm taking it is because of the damage done to my esophagus from the methotrexate and prednisone. By my not eating any fattening foods and cutting out so many important foods including certain fruits such as blueberries and strawberries, I am losing out on many vitamins. That is why I have lost all that weight. Another reason is because I had stopped exercising or hardly exercised in this past year because it's been either the acid reflux, the sjogren's/lupus, the asthma or something else and now I'm paying the price for it. Today I did exercise and then did the weights for 20min. and a little later intend to use the treadmill. Wish I could do this on a daily basis because if I do then I could rebuild my muscles. Because of the acid reflux I stopped eating pasta w/tomato sauce every night, stopped using any dressing or using 1/2 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil in salad, stopped drinking coffee and what I miss the most - haven't gone near a good old fashioned chocolate cupcake or for that matter a piece of cake and oh do I miss food.... Oh .. also because of my liver problems and sjogren's/lupus I can't go near steak, lambchops or any other good meats. So, I underwent the 24 hour ph study and a scope. The results were off the charts. I have severe acidic reflux. I was shocked, but the gastro said that for every person that has "heartburn" there is someone who doesn't. He and my pulmo both also said 3/4 of asthma sufferers have GERD. I have come to realize I do have some symptoms. I will get the hiccups from time to time. I will also get a little late night nausea. I never associated hiccups with acid before, but if I go take a Rolaids they will go away. My gastro said it is very important to have the ph study done because there are two types of reflux. Acid and non-acid. He said the meds for the acid reflux (antacids, nexium, protonix, prilosec, vinegar, etc.) will make the non-acid reflux worse. The doctors wanted to bring that up again but I wouldn't go there again. Hi all. I was informed yesterday by my doc that peppermint is a GERD trigger. She said peppermint tea should be fine, but to avoid peppermints. Who knew? I have a hard time with the GERD as I don't ever feel it. It just causes damage and upsets my asthma. Lovely.
