Guest guest
,I had a tetanus shot nine years ago, which means I'm due again next year. The shot was not very painful at all at the time I received it, but my arm was extremely sore for the next few days. Otherwise, I had no problems with it and was glad that I got it. My parents have gotten the pneumonia vaccine without a problem. HIB they give to babies: my son received it with no problem. Although there is always a risk with vaccines, the risk of the disease is always much greater. I assume that the doctor is recommending the vaccines because you are not doing a good job of fighting off infections and she may be concerned that if you are exposed to one of these illnesses, that you will not be able to fend them off. My unprofessional opinion is that you should follow the doctor's recommendations. After I got the flu in Feb. 2009, which sent my lungs into an asthmatic response that took weeks to fully stop, I started getting the flu shot every year. I have not had a contagious illness since that flu, not even a cold. I have never in my life gone this long without getting sick. It is quite a blessing.SheriFrom: Wolf To: asthma Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 12:33 AMSubject: quick question Hi All;I was getting colds all of the time. Guest guest
We don't have tetanus boosters now on a regular basis. You are assumed to have a good level of cover after three vaccinations (my last was in my school leavers' vaccinations, 10 years ago), and they'll then only top it up if you either have an accident where it is recommended (most people in the UK are very close to a hospital or somewhere else they can receive medical treatment - even the most remote areas will have some sort of health care facility, and can get to a hospital within about an hour), or you are going to a country where the standard of health care isn't so good. The recommended length of times always change - when I had my Hep A and typhoid vaccine before going to Belarus and Russia 10 years ago, I was told that if you had a booster a year later, you were covered for 10 years. I asked about getting that topped up before going to Morocco last year, as I was very close to it 'running out', only to find that you now need Hep A and typhoid again after 20 years, not 10JennTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! Don't brand me, don't classify me, don't tell me what to wear. I'll be who I want to be, and I'm proud to be me.Subject: Re: quick questionTo: "asthma " <asthma >Date: Thursday, 18 August, 2011, 7:34 ,I had a tetanus shot nine years ago, which means I'm due again next year. Guest guest
You should probably definitely get the tetanus shot if its been over 10 yrs since your last one. There is no cure if you cut yourself and get a tetanus infection. Ive had the hep B shot (HIB) series when it was initially offered in the early 90s. The only problem I had with it was a sore arm from the viscosity of the vaccine...its thicker so it does tend to make your arm sore. You get the first shot, then the 2nd shot in either one or 3 months..and the last one after 6 months. I "Should" get the pnuemonia vaccine but Im holding out on that one for now. I never got a flu shot until H1N1 came out and I had read that most of the deaths were coming from people with pre-existing resp. disabilities. I knew just enough to be scared by that so I got both the annual flu shot and the H1N1 shot. Personally, I wouldnt steer anyone away from any of these vaccines..but thats just my opinion that they are worthwhile. I do not tend to react to most injections (except my allergy shots...go figure lol). Ann
Guest guest
Okay, thanks. It would help me if someone who was as sensitive as I  had taken it and had not reacted. I don't have to do anything right away. She wouldn't even have tested if I hadn't brought up not being able to avoid colds. If I get my immune system strong enough, my body should be able to handle it but right now I don't think it is. Sounds weird I know but I think you have to be strong enough to handle it.  You should probably definitely get the tetanus shot if its been over 10 yrs since your last one. Guest guest
Hi . my dd, age 20, was getting sick all the time with repeated resp. infections..seems like she get over one and another one would happen..anyway took her to an immun. dr who ran test which showed she was making no antibodies to Igg...he gave her an pneuovax shot and retested her in 4 weeks. it showed her starting to make the antibodies. I am almost afraid to say out loud but it help a great deal...she has only had one bronchitis episode since. she still gets sinus infections but I belive this is because of severe allergies to dust and the environment. she didnt have any problems with the shot at all. the hib she got as a child and the tetnus every 10 yrs.. her immune system is very sensitive to things and she didnt have any reactions to these vaccine. good luck..I hope the pneu. shot helps you like it did her. jean ps. if you get all three shots I would recommend not all at the same time..this way if you do have a reaction you will know to which one. j > > Hi All; > I was getting colds all of the time. Guest guest
hi . I just responded to your email..I am the one with a dd who also got frequent resp. infections and who is so much better now after the pneuvax shot....ok...I just read this about your reaction to the flu shot....flu vaccines have thimerosal (a mercury-containing preservative) in them..or they use to(not sure if they still do)...could it be you reacted to this? the pneumvax doesnt have this presvative..maybe something you can ask you dr. please note, although my dd who tested possitive to mercury on an allergy test she did not have any reaction to the flu vaccine..you may be more sensitive to things like this...just thought I mention the presvative in case you want to ck into. Ill keep you in my thoughts and prayers...I know how hard it is to be sick all the time. jean > > Thanks. Guest guest
Thanks again Jean. My doctor said she would give me a skin test to see if I had any adverse reactions. Then we would start with 1/2 a dose wait 30 minutes to see if anything happened and then administer the other 1/2. She is very sensitive to my concern. I more me not wanting to risk it. She also said we would pre-test any flu shots in the future. I so appreciate your prayers. Guest guest
Thanks again Jean. Sorry if you get this message twice. My doctor is very sensitive to my concerns. She said she would give me a small test to see if I responded. Then I would only get 1/2 and we would wait 30 minutes before we administered the next 30 minutes if everything went okay. I appreciate your prayers and thoughts!  hi . Guest guest
I got my flu shot yesterday. I have been doing well today. I had a rough time with it last year because the seasonal vaccine was combined with the H1N1 vaccine. This year, so far, no problems with feeling bad.To: asthma Sent: Friday, August 19, 2011 11:35 AMSubject: Re: Re: quick question Thanks again Jean. Sorry if you get this message twice. Guest guest
I will only be on here for a minute because I am still very sick. When I came home from er & hospital apparently I caught something that turned into a very bad throat (strep) and every single gland swelled. Thought after antibiotics for 3 days that I would be able to shake it but am just as bad. caught strep throat from me and was also put on the z pack and apparently germs are in apartment and can't shake it..... You won't believe this but when I complained to rheumy that I was still sick last week she told me to go to an ENT and I did but the day I saw ENT he told me that throat looked much better to him and he sent that note back to rheumy. Well, today I have 99.1 at 4pm and hope it doesn't go up more by tonight but infection is in mouth, glands, throat and chest again. I can't believe this.... Rheumy doesn't have hours on Friday and receptionist had to fax her about my 99.1 and rheumy faxed or called her back to tell her to tell me that I should go back to the ENT. What B.LLS!!!! I can't believe it. Thought she would be telling me to be in Rheumy's office Monday morning but that didn't happen ....SharonFrom:" Canter" Subject:Re: Re: quick questionDate:August 19, 2011 11:48:51 AM EDTTo:"asthma " <asthma >I got my flu shot yesterday.
