Guest guest
Thanks , thats brilliant advice, I think i just wanted abit of reasurance as I feel it helps to guide me do the exercises otherwise i get abit lost in it all sometimes. Do you ever find this? Thats great that you get to sit on a bench and have some time out during your working day and use this to notice your thoughts. Its good too that you can defuse your thoughts at home first and then take it out into the open if this is working for you. how long have you been doing ACT for? I try to spend my lunch break on a bench, just noticing things but in particular observing my thoughts. I practice defusion at home, when I have actually induced some very powerful (negative) thoughts and then noticed them and tried out defusing them. Then I feel more prepared for doing all this "for real" out in the open. x To: act_for_the_public Cc: act_for_the_public Sent: Sun, 28 November, 2010 18:00:41Subject: when and how to practice act Hi everyone, forgive me but I have not had time to catch up with all of the posts on here over the last few days as i am in the middle of moving house, so if there is anything that I comment on that I have missed then i apologise in advance.I have another question for the group wich i need advice on.I have been practicing connection at work but im finding that im getting distracted from my actual job by noticing the environment around me and im actually making mistakes in my work due to this. I think im not connecting but letting my mind comment on the moment i am in instead. I find it hard to connect with all the things in my environment (including my work) at the same time and i usualy get carried away with just one or two things (i.e noticing my feet or the air on my face). then again im wondering if i need to practice the observing exercises on my ipod more at home first in a quite place to get the hang of it and then transfere it over to the wok place. Sorry for the essay but does anybody relate to this and or have any advice please? = )

Guest guest
Hi Nice of you to ask - I love talking about me ;0) so here goes.I've been ACTing since the summer (I'm in the UK - seems a long time ago, with snow now covering the north of England!). Some days, I feel like I completely understand everything about ACT, and then the next day I get completely lost in it all. I'm good at defusing thoughts that I "know" for sure are just, you know, mind sewage. I used to be haunted by images of my boy dying (he's got a learning disability - but nothing that affects his physical health) They don't disturb me anymore. In fact, now I mention it, I don't even properly "defuse" those thoughts anymore. They just mean so little to me now that I don't pay them any attention. That's amazing, and I've only just realised it!!! They used to really play a big role in my depression, but now.... nice!I'm not so good at working out "new" thoughts, and judging whether they are sewage or might be important. These always trip me up badly. Yesterday I saw a paediatrician and got loads of new comments about my boy's problems, some better than I thought, some worse than I thought. I've not slept at all and keep crying, it just feels like too much to take in and process. But I am getting there, and I am sure you will too. Practice, practice, practice...... xFrom: Holmes To: ACT_for_the_Public Sent: Tue, 30 November, 2010 10:25:50Subject: Re: when and how to practice act Thanks , thats brilliant advice, I think i just wanted abit of reasurance as I feel it helps to guide me do the exercises otherwise i get abit lost in it all sometimes. Guest guest
- Your journey sounds a lot like mine. Good job on using defusion, observing what's going on and being patient. Guest guest
, love that you wrote "ACTing" he he that's awsome! I really like the little sayings we come up with from doing all this...a personal faveorate of mine is "ACT kungfu" lol. Anyway, I digress. So you have been doing ACT since the summer- roughly the same time as me then, I too am in the U.K with the snow! It's really coming down isn't it? BUT sooo pretty. It's realy reasuring to hear someone else who has practicing around the same length of time as me as it seems you are really getting alot from it. That's great news also, that it has helped you (no end it seems) with the thoughts about your son. I think you are right, some thoughts are just plain mind sewage from the word go. But then, there are those thoughts, as you say that really do trip us up but yes, it's just practicing defusion more and more that does the trick, although it can take some time and the thoughts just keep coming in the meantime.Im so sorry to hear about the recent news concerning your son that has affected you in the way that it has. Although I can't comment on your situation, i do find tears are sometimes hepful as a release but as I say that is just my way of looking at crying. Best wishes to your son, I hope he's going to be ok.The other thing that really struck a chord with me about what you said at the end there was that it seems too much to take in and process at the moment. My heart really does go out to you as I have had some situations in the past few years that I really felt I just couldn't take on for a while It's funny isn't it that we have clearly put so much time into ACT but the hardest bit I find is using it when I really need to. I'm great at using it when things are o.k and I wobble slightly but if I "fall off" (I imagine myself walking along a tight rope when things get abit unsettled) it seems I sometimes struggle to find the motivation to carry on doing the exercises but then i just try to accept this also, that there will be sometimes when I have an off ACT day. However, im still going to go to bed tonight having attempted some.= )All in all though, I am finding it very useful, having tried every other therapy and self help book under the sun, this seems to be the one thing thats starting to help me lead more of a fuller life, slowly but surley. I found it was alot to get my head around at first and but I tried to be patient and in the last few weeks it has suddenly clicked. yeay. So how did you hear about ACT? I went to a therapist for C.B.T and ended up being introduced to ACT instead. What a coincidence that was as I parted comapny with the therapist after afew weeks but I kept up with "the happyness trap" that he had recommended me!
