Guest guest
I'v been on the 500/50 for the most part over ten years, don't remember when it first came out. In the beginning my heart would race and pound and I would find it very difficult to try and sleep if I took it right before bed. It was similar to a nebulizer tx which still has that effect on me. The advair no longer has that effect, I don't feel any different on it it. (jittery wise) It is my main maintenance drug. although at times ,like now I have to add prednisone and two puffs of flovent on top. I will eventually get back to just the advair. To: asthma Sent: Tue, July 26, 2011 4:55:50 PMSubject: medication with LABA Hi:Have any of you been unable to tolerate the asthma meds with LABA and if so what did you do? I'm on 500/50 Advair twice a day and I have had to increase my Valium to tolerate it and now I am on an herbal remedy just to allow my body to tolerate the medicine and I'm not breathing any better. It improved for a while but any improvement has gone away. I'm doing very short workouts per the doctor's instructions and in order to breathe when I am finished I have the choice of taking my rescue inhaler which would only increase the jitters or take the Valium. Guest guest
Thanks . My body is just not adjusting. I get sick every week as it has destroyed my immune system. I am taking a supplement from my naturopath to try to take care of that but most importantly it is not working to control my asthma. How long did it take for it to work for everything to settle in for you? Sounds like you need some additional help as well right now. I was thinking of just taking it in the morning and the Flovent at night to reduce the negative impact on my body. Just looking for answers so I can get back to living my life. Not quite sure what to do since my heart condition prevents any other options with LABA.Thanks for answering. Guest guest
Hi . I am taking two meds with LABA. One is a controller med that combines a LABA with a inhaled steroid and the other is a LABA alone. I have never had any problems tolerating the LABA. I do notice some jitters, but they are not too bad. The jitters are much worse with my albuterol. I hope you get this figured out. I have found that xanax works better than valium.MadelineTo: asthma Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2011 4:55 PMSubject: medication with LABA Hi:Have any of you been unable to tolerate the asthma meds with LABA and if so what did you do? Guest guest
Thanks Madeline. When I took it the first time I had no troubles as well. I became ill and my body has become a lot more sensitive to everything. We'll keep working on it. I think my naturopath might have better answers. I appreciate the response. Hi . Guest guest
Your welcome , it must be so difficult with a heart condition. I know it is scary sometimes when my heart is racing and I so far (knock on wood) have a healthy heart. When I can't breath my heart races blood pressure goes up then add in the meds ...no fun! I think it took the normal two weeks to take effect. It took much longer for my body to adjust to the LABA several months maybe longer. My asthma can be well controlled on the 500 for long periods of time. I also have tried to use the 220mcg of flovent 2puffs 2x a day when trying to wean from the advair. I don't usually do very well. You should talk with your doctor to see if this is an option for you especially since your saying you don't feel like your asthma is well controlled. Do u think you have an allergic component to the asthma? I have had the same struggle with my immune system. Doctors are finally realizing we do get more of the steroid from inhaled drugs into our systems (thats no reason to stop using them.. we all need to breathe) I was diagnosed with common variable immune deficiency (fancy way of saying I have low IGGs or immunoglobulins) about 2 and a half years ago. About six months ago this same dr told me it was from the inhaled steroids but still gave the same diagnosis... confusing. I am constantly getting sinus infections that if not treated early turn into bronchitis both which set off the asthma. It is frustrating because these are the best drugs we have to treat the asthma but we end up with unintended side effects. Guest guest
Thanks Ann. I agree. I just met with my doctor and she said this was the medication with LABA with the least side effects so others weren't an option. We used the corticosteroids and they didn't work well. Neither did Prednisone. We're contemplating allergy shots and possibly Xolair but at we'd have to get it down from the $1000 a shot every two to four weeks. I was hoping someone had found something that worked for them that I could try. You never know where the answer might be. Id say if your not showing improvement by now that maybe Advair isnt working for you...you might need to try something else. Guest guest
I had problems as well with my stomach not liking it. So I just do things I know will not come back up. I do it every other day. I used all of those recipes that came with the machine, and they were too strong, the vegetables, so I just do things slowly and only a little bit at a time, and I eat toast or cereal with it, seems to work better. I do love meat too, yep, I am a carnivore, I am not really trying not to eat meat, just don't seem to eat it as much as I used to. I am usually full from the fruits and vegetables, and sunflower seeds, nuts, whatever I snack on. Just started eating healthier snacks, because I love chocolate, and cannot get enough of it. I still eat junk food, but, am a little better at eating healthy versions, if that is possible. Try to stay away from boxed mixes and such, most of them make me sick, getting back to home cooking, and it seems to help a lot. Nothing fancy, just plain old good food. Stopped taking vitamins, they were making me sick too. My Dr. started giving me B-12 shots, and iron pills, seems I have a deficiency in those things, and that made a big difference too. Found out that the B-12 made all of my pain a little better, don't understand why, except the fact that I was a terrible eater, all kinds of convenience foods and such, eating just awful, no wonder I was so sick. I hope you can find good things to eat that will help you.To: asthma Sent: Wed, July 27, 2011 6:19:21 PMSubject: Re: medication with LABA I juiced for a while as well with both vegetables and fruits and then my stomach stopped liking it. Guest guest
I have learned to start slow. It's a big change for me. I used to try anything and not think much about it. Now it's slow and steady. I do the same. I eat healthier than before. I'm allergic to nuts, which I love, so that eliminates a large number of good foods. I'm still a sugar junkie but I try to manage that. Too much sugar nails my immune system and makes me ill. I can no longer tolerate alcohol so it's lots of water and decaf tea and a soda as a treat. I have to confess when I'm feeling sorry for myself I still binge on unhealthy foods. I try not to do that often. My wonderful husband cooks so I just have to get the recipes. I actually thought when I mentioned my immune system that I would get a B-something shot but the supplement give me lots of B vitamins. Today I didn't work out, and other than being fatigued with all of the medication, I'm feeling okay. I really miss working out and used to start my day with two hours. Now, after 6 months of trying to figure out what is wrong with me I'm cleared to start again. I do 10 minutes of walking slowly and I feel like I've run a marathon. What do you do for exercise? My husband says I have to start more slowly. I think 10 minutes is pretty slow but maybe he's right. I had problems as well with my stomach not liking it. Guest guest
Orcas Island in Washington. I just love email Yep great talking to you, I am right outside Pittsburgh, Pa. about 8:30 here. I'm a writer so I'm at the computer quite a bit just because it's what I do. Thanks again for chatting with me. I really appreciate it.Have a great evening. Not sure where you are but it's a little after 5 here. Well, I used to walk and partly jog, due to a lower back problem, I cannot really run anymore. So I walk, and will try to jog every now and then, but, it's usually no go on the jogging. So I keep busy around the house. I do gardening as much as I can, and since I live in an apt, I will walk up and down the halls a few times every other day. I try to make sure I circle my apt at least a couple times a day doing whatever I can find to do. LOL. I wonder what my neighbors downstairs think I am doing up here. I make myself move constantly unless I am reading or watching a movie or something. I noticed lately that I have taken to fidgeting, I used to do that when I was younger, and then didn't do it for awhile. I think it is funny. I have lately read that people that fidget keep their weight down for some reason. So ok, I will keep fidgeting. LOL. I used to go swimming in a health pool where I had physical therapy, used to go real early every morning, except the weekends, and then went out walking on the weekends. Trying to start to lift weights again, very, very slowly. Used to jog, walk, lift weights, and swim all week, after being diagnosed with asthma everything just went to hell. Now, that I am getting energy again, picking these things up again starting out slowly, but getting there. I have noticed that I sit at my computer too much, so going to look in the mirror to see if my back end looks any wider, need to get away from the computer more. LOL> To: asthma Sent: Wed, July 27, 2011 7:38:43 PMSubject: Re: medication with LABA I have learned to start slow. It's a big change for me. I used to try anything and not think much about it. Guest guest
Congratulations, that is wonderful that you are giving it your all. I thought of attending some of those groups. But, I was able to do it before myself, though, this time it is harder, much harder, I will give it a go myself, and if I don't get there, I will get some help also. I sort of talked myself into not making a big deal out of it. You know, I had to fast 12 hours for some blood tests the other day, and it was miserable, because I am used to getting up in the middle of the night and getting a glass of milk. And I couldn't do that, and you know what, I didn't even miss it. I am just going to make losing weight, and eating healthy a regular part of my life, like brushing my teeth, I will not obsess over it, if I fall down ,I will just start over, that seems to be good for me to think that way now. And you know what? It works because when I fall down, I haven't been going crazy and making myself upset because I only had a small piece of cake, really small, like two or three little bites, instead of the whole piece, and I am still losing weight. I think it is because I know if I want it that bad I can have a little bit of it, so I don't feel like I am depriving myself of it. I am a sugar addict, and that is the toughest one to beat for me. I don't drink, or use salt, well maybe once in a while if I have corn on the cob, other than that, I don't even cook with it anymore. One by one I have cut down everything, but, the sugar is killing me, so I am cutting the sugar down a little bit every few days, and it seems to be working. I don't get upset anymore, I will just say to myself, tomorrow, I will make sure I do better. To: asthma Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2011 9:08 PMSubject: Re: medication with LABA Willow B-12 deficiency is also known as pernicious anemia. If you dont have enough B-12, you cant absorb the iron nutrients from your food. Without enough iron, your body starts to have all sorts of troubles. Ive started on Weight Watchers 5 weeks ago. I have tried doing the weight loss thing on my own but Ive learned that I need the meetings and I need to be able to talk with other people who struggle with their weight like I do. It helps me be more accountable to myself. I started eating lots more vegetables and fruit, less junk food and fast food, and Ive lost 13.4 pounds! I also started some exercise...nothing outrageous, but more than I was doing. I feel way better AND...last week I actually forgot to take my asthma meds for 2 days and I still could exercise without trouble. My point being what we put into our bodies can make a huge difference in how we feel and our health. My pulmo had told me that if I can lose 10% of my body weight, my sleep apnea might even partially correct itself...so I have that motivation too. Guest guest
That is exactly what I read about your place. Yes, right now I am looking at somewhere like the outer banks, inland a little more though, somewhere I can go to the beach by walking a few blocks, or a little ride by car. There are always pros and cons, but I am willing to give up a lot of things just to be able to live by the beach. Trying to make my life more calm, and simple. Been cleaning my stuff out, really did a heck of a job. Just at a time in my life that stuff no longer matters. I just want a tiny little place, with a few of my favorite things, to paint, read, and my internet, and swim, and that's about it.To: asthma Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2011 8:46 PMSubject: Re: medication with LABA It's beautiful and we love the deer that roam in our back yard and the bunnies that are on part of the island. No traffic. We like the idea of a beach because we love the sound of the water but had to settle for a view of the water. Lots of trees, and bugs (yuck) and allergens (yeah). But I get to look at beautiful things while I write and have great ferry rides, when you can avoid the ferry lines in the summer . Pros and cons to everything and we still love it here. Have fun with your search. I was just reading about that island, sounds interesting, living there. I have always lived in a small town, and am thinking of relocating to somewhere with a beach or something, sick of living around buildings and houses. Want something different. Guest guest
I am not that much overweight, or at least I don't think so, but, my Dr. would beg to differ with me, but, I could stand to lose some lbs. So I am trying, if it helps me breathe better, and will help with my back pain so be it. I know when I sleep it is tough, I cannot curl up on either side anymore, because my chest hurts, so I have to lay at an angle with a pillow behind my back, and if I sleep on my back my head has to be raised quite a bit from the gerd, so I am thankful to get a good nights rest. From: ANN To: asthma Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2011 9:08 PMSubject: Re: medication with LABA Willow B-12 deficiency is also known as pernicious anemia. Ann medication with LABA Hi: Have any of you been unable to tolerate the asthma meds with LABA and if so what did you do? I'm on 500/50 Advair twice a day and I have had to increase my Valium to tolerate it and now I am on an herbal remedy just to allow my body to tolerate the medicine and I'm not breathing any better. It improved for a while but any improvement has gone away. I'm doing very short workouts per the doctor's instructions and in order to breathe when I am finished I have the choice of taking my rescue inhaler which would only increase the jitters or take the Valium. I take the Valium. Thanks for any help. -- Take care, -- Take care, -- Take care, -- Take care,
Guest guest
Congratulations on your weight loss! It is amazing how so many things can effect how efficiently our body works and how healthy or unhealthy that make us feel. Willow B-12 deficiency is also known as pernicious anemia. Guest guest
Hi Barbara:I use the acronym because I can never remember what it stands for either. Oops, another goof !! I seen there is a name on my email list. Hi !! To: asthma Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2011 8:46 PM Subject: Re: medication with LABA It's beautiful and we love the deer that roam in our back yard and the bunnies that are on part of the island. I just love email Yep great talking to you, I am right outside Pittsburgh, Pa. about 8:30 here. To: asthma Sent: Wed, July 27, 2011 8:12:51 PM Subject: Re: medication with LABA you sound like me We have stairs so I at least get those. I'm a writer so I'm at the computer quite a bit just because it's what I do. Thanks again for chatting with me. I really appreciate it. Have a great evening. LOL> To: asthma Sent: Wed, July 27, 2011 7:38:43 PM Subject: Re: medication with LABA I have learned to start slow. I hope you can find good things to eat that will help you. I've tried to get what I need naturally, expect the fruit. As you mentioned, my body does not like them. I take lots of supplements, especially Vit C. So glad you are feeling better. Part of my problem was being a vegetarian for a few years and I found out that my body needs meat. I'm a type O and we are definitely carnivores even if I don't like the idea of killing animals for my meals. Sounds like you have found the right recipe for health for you which is much of the battle. Well, I have started juicing a little, because I find that most of the juices I buy make me sick, so I do apples and pears, and whatever else I can get in, sometimes carrots, getting better. I really need the vitamin c, because I cannot eat most acidic foods. It seems to be working, I get so much energy, and feel a lot better. I am eating healthier, a lot less meat, still do dairy and fish, I think it is working for me. In the fight mode, our bodies view almost everything as the enemy which would make sense that we get more allergies. You know I have wondered about that myself. I have always had different allergies, but, it seems that since I have developed asthma I keep getting more and more. I have found that xanax works better than valium. Guest guest
Hi Again:It should automatically sign but let me know if it isn't. I live on Orcas Island in Washington. It is amazingly beautiful. I fell in love the first time I visited. It is about 90 minutes from Seattle to the ferry and an hour ferry ride from there. We have a bug man that comes and sprays once a month outside. That helps and if it gets too bad, we call him out more. I have gone from blasting everything with the toxic chemicals to using my shoe and my husband . I realize my lungs can't take the chemicals and I didn't do myself any service by using them before. The only other drawback is access to medical care. Pretty limited so it's been a pain but I hope to be back to my pre-episode self soon. Yup. Good and not so good to everything. Hello, I'm sorry I don't know your name as you never put one at the end of your email. Can I ask where you live ? It sounds very beautiful ! I don't know that I cuold take the bugs though. Certain times of the year, I bet they're bad. I guess no matter wshere we live, there's always something !
