Guest guest
Hi, Courage, I am SO glad that your sister has come to her senses, at least for now. I would definitely be there to talk to the doctor. (I know wild horses couldn't keep you away now!) If the swelling is just on the knee, I wouldn't think it was related to her heart necessarily. However, anything is possible. If the swelling is in her lower legs, I would be a bit more concerned. My mother used to get swelling on one of her knees quite often before she had a knee replacement. For years, the doctors would just drain the fluid off her knee with a needle. Her knee would always feel much better after it was drained. I am sure the doctor will have some good advice when he/she sees your mom's knee. Let us know what happens. Guest guest
Hello All, Mom's caregiver just called me to tell me that mom has an inflamed knee and that my sister said I could leave a note with the doctor who is coming by tomorrow morning. I intend to be there tomorrow morning to ask him to check mom for a UTI but I haven't a clue about this puffy knee. Could this be water on the knee? I'm thinking that this happens when the heart isn't working very well????? How is this treated? Any advice you all could give me would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks a million Courage Yes, I was shocked that I was now allowed to have contact with the doctor. My mom very nearly dying last Sunday must have been a wake up call indeed. Guest guest
Hi Courage, Im not sure I can help but I do want to say that its great to hear you can now have contact with the dr.When my dads kydneys first started to fail, he started swelling in the lower legs. That was the first sign of problems.I think this also can be the first signs of a heart not funtioning.I think if your there , I would just have the dr, discuss it with you maybe he can do some tests to see what the problem is.Moms ankles swell throughout the day and then after sleeping they go back down.I think its definately something to bring to the attention of the doc.Wish I could help more.My very best to you and your mom Ron gaat wrote: Hello All, Mom's caregiver just called me to tell me that mom has an inflamed knee and that my sister said I could leave a note with the doctor who is coming by tomorrow morning. Guest guest
Hey Courage, How is your mom transferred for toiletting, getting in and out of bed? If she is weight bearing, she could have had that knee twisted without anyone realizing. My mom suffered swelling of ankles and knees while in her tilt wheel chair the last year of her life, no weight bearing at all, so I put it down to lack of muscle use to help blood flow. I just made sure her legs were elevated and put magnetic insoles into her sheep's wool slippers (for her heels). That did seem to help. Thing is, Mom got contractures behind her knees despite our caring, couldn't straighten her legs, so blood flow had to go up and over. That could also have been a factor. It is all a process toward the end, I hate to say. I would think an inflamed knee would indicate injury, as in swollen, hot, reddened, possibly infected. A swollen knee would indicate fluid pooling. So glad you will see the doctor and get first hand information. Keep us updated. , Oakville Ont. Guest guest
Hi Piper, I'm not sure what occurred to have my sister say that I could all of a sudden leave a note with the doctor. I am not, however, counting my chickens just yet as this doesn't mean that she will let me have a say. It could be that she meant that I could leave the doctor a note about mom taking dilaudid? Or it could mean that mom nearly dying did scare her and she is second guessing the advice she got re mom's current meds or with my mom's knees starting to swell she didn't have a clue what to do and needs input? Gosh, who knows what she is thinking. Either way, I am hoping to see the doctor tomorrow and ask him about the knee. I am also going to suggest that mom get tested for a UTI but don't know how this is going to go over as I'm not sure if we need my sisters OK on this. I can't help but feel that the damage is already done. I understand that even if mom comes off the dilaudid it could be quite tricky and this alone could case her to die???? If mom is able to come off this heavy drug I believe that she will never get back to where she was before - bed-bound but still hanging in. Its a mess! Guest guest
Hi , My mom has been bed-bound for about 2 years now and needs the lift whenever she is being transferred. Mom's legs have also been contracted for years now as well. I'm sure that the swollen knee is yet another sign that she is falling further down the slope. I also find that I have lost a lot of my confidence regarding mom's meds. I feel that it is too late now to make major changes as the damage is done. Guest guest
Courage, Mom was in a wheel chair the last year of her life and her ankles swelled until I put them up to rest. Circulation wasn't that good. My knees get swollen when the weather changes. My knees are bad. Hope you get to talk to the MD in the morning. Sis is getting afraid of her choices? Now she is putting it on you.? That is a good thing. You will be ok. You always have been. And there is a point that pain meds were about all Mom was on except for BP. And that was as needed. Hope things go well. Hugs, Donna R Caregave for Mom (after I brought her from WI to MI) for 3 years and 4th year in a nh. She was almost 89 when she died in '02. No dx other than mine. Guest guest
Hi Courage My Mil has been in hospital for 5+ weeks now (mosltly bed bound) and goes from bad to worse to bad to good (does that make sense? probably not) Anyway my reason for this note is that last week we noticed her leg was puffy and quite solid to touch we told the staff about it and they sent her for an ultra sound scan which revealed that she has a DVT. She's now on Walferin (sp?) and also they queried her swallowing ability so have her on a drip with the anti biotics through IV. All told she seems to be rallying with this treatment. I hope your Mum doesn't have a DVT but maybe it would be worth asking them to check.
