Guest guest
J & A and Louisa There is one thing I notice about this group. It doesn't need me! That is no bad thing!!! I go to sleep and folk from America and New Zealand keep the thing rolling along. J & A - you seem to be doing well. When you get the biopsy results you can really feel good about it if they have taken it out with good margins around it. Louisa I should get the scan results when I go to London via Cheltenham next Friday. We had a good night out with from the Prostate Cancer Charity - she was up in York for conference and we met her in Selby for an Italian. As we all three (Maureen + Pat and me) come from Leeds originally we had a good reminisce! , and got the hard work of helping her at the conference stall. I hope to get down to Angel Walk next Friday to see the "Angels" - nurses who man (or is it woman) the help line!

Guest guest
, Yes we do need you. There are those in the group (at least one-me) who reads everything you put out. I may not have very much to contribute since I am relatively lucky with my PSA score, but it certainly helps to keep in touch with you, and others. I had a Radical in Jan 99, and still leak, but have now moved to a new medical area, and am hoping that they might be able to stop this inconvenience. Having been normally healthy before diagnosis, I got a bit of a shock. So this made me rethink life in general and all the things I had NOT done. So next year (2000) I ran the London Marathon, and that made it all worth while. Since diagnosis, I have come across many men with Prostate conditions and cancers, and the chat-line has helped enourmously to keep abreast of medical thinking and developments. Guest guest
Robin Conggratulations are in order at doing so well. You did well to get a place in the London Marathon and to finish it. It amazed me when we visited Greenwich, saw the Cutty Sark and then realised how far this is from central London - we went by boat - you ran it! What do you use for the leaks - I use Ladies Always Ultra Nightime! As you say it is good to stay in touch and I hope the group continues to work in a friendly manner
Guest guest
, The Prostate Charity found me a place (I think they call it a golden ticket) since I had promised them £1.000. In the end I gave them £4,000 and some more to the ward of the hospital where I had my op. Washington never told a lie, and alas I cannot match that. It is true that I covered the distance within the allowed time, but I did not run all the way.!!!!!!!! I have the finishers medal and t-shirt to prove my involvement, but the whole day was far too enjoyable to rush it!! Although a very personal amibition I know of a number of Prostate sufferers who sleep easier at night knowing that it is possible for a non-runner to go and do the London Marathon only 1 year after the op. So it has helped some people. I qualify as a non-runner by virtue of the fact that I have only ever run for a bus twice in my life, and missed it on each occasion!! Leakage is a minor nuisance. Most often now when I go lifting heavy stones etc:. The "management" decided we should have a new pond in our new home, so 10 days of digging ensued with boulder lifting daily. I felt very very humble when lifting them compared to that programme "worlds strongest man" .Think I would go in for "worlds weakest man" contest and probably win it too. Leakage come just when I don' want it. Ie when making a presentation or interviewing.Everytime its "fingers crossed" that the damp patch does'nt show.!! Please keep writing. Guest guest
Robin, Man, you're just what the doctor ordered. I've gotten in a routine since the start of the new century of jogging (nobody would call what I do running)3 miles every weekday. It's the only way I keep my weight under some kind of control. I thought that with this diagnosis of pc that my jogging days were over. But you are really an inspiration. Congratulations on your recovery progress. And on your marathon medal! Guest guest
Hi Dennis, Your comments are far too flattering and generous. You see my family have always told me I'm a stubborn mad old fool who is over-weight and should not run- even for that celebrated bus. So that made me determined to do it. Sadly the loss of the Prostate gland itself did little to lose me any weight so I had to resort to more drastic measures. Like all these modern sports its all in the mind. 5 days a week come rain or shine I pounded around my own 3/4 mile circuit until I could not stand the sight of it any more. So measured a 6 mile " track " around the local roads and hills. This became fun. My colleagues would say (at the end of a days work) so what are you doing tonight?. Usually everyone else would proudly announce which pub they intended to drink dry. My (very soft ) reply would be " probably 2 circuits- about 12 miles " !! I really enjoyed watching their faces, since they were much younger than me. I mention the word " fun " because its very important to laugh at what you are doing. I had great fun for months in training, and the biggest laugh of all was at about 19 miles - somewhere round the back of London- when I was overtaken by a 79 year old going great guns. We chatted briefly and he certainly inspired me to keep going. " Chin up " he said. " Helps the air go in " ! At the time I was speechless so was grateful for his encouragement. It was his 15th marathon!!! I rabbit on far too much. Sorry. If you are interested in the more mechanical side of how to develop jogging into longer distance work, I would be happy to tell you what I had to do. There is no limit once you know how and set your own targets. Good luck, Robin Ewart ********************************************************************************\ ** The information contained in this message is confidential and may be legally privileged. Guest guest
Robin, Regardless of what you say, you are a definite inspiration to me. Don't know if I'll ever make it to marathon level but I would like to be one of those 79-year-olds who's still running 10K's. My wife's friend is training for her first marathon. I listened to her go over a litany of her injuries and ailments caused by her training and then was startled when she ended with, " It's just wonderful! " It turns out she's a cancer survivor, too. Guest guest
Dennis, Your wife's friend has got it right. Laugh and enjoy it. She may appear to suffer injury etc: but mentally she is loving every moment. Her message is clear (particularly after cancer) " do what you want to do, and have fun doing it. " I would really like to do another marathon- even with all the training- but my wife threatens draconian measures if I do. So I have bought a semi-mountain bike, and go out early mornings for a spin. Gets the heart going and you see over all the hedgerows. Excellent sport at this time of year. A little pain or injury is not important in the main scheme of things. Enjoying each day is much more important. Because its all very personal (you can't get anyone else to do your running for you) the sense of achievement is really high when you finish a challenge. Don't be frightened to have a go. You will be amazed at how much you can achieve. (I've got the t-shirt to prove it!) I look forward to hearing of your success Robin ********************************************************************************\ ** The information contained in this message is confidential and may be legally privileged.
