Guest guest
Hi, I am still taking Topamax, so I can't answer that question. But I will say that the weight *loss* definitely stopped after the first 6-9 months of taking it, and I've even gained back about 10 pounds. I lost 50 pounds in six months (which I needed to). I also noticed that the first time I tried Topamax I did not have significant weight loss or symptom improvement but had to discontinue it after however long because the cognitive side effects were so severe. After about a year off of it I have now been back on for over a year and this time had the weight loss, dramatic improvement in symptoms, and very little cognitive effect. So I'd say for anyone to try it again even if you've tried it before; you never know. ~Beth in CA~ Sent from my iPhone > Has anybody had weight gain after stopping topamax?? Guest guest
I hate to do this, since some people are receiving relief from using Topamax, but I feel you also need to know that there is a black box warning on Topamax that you should not take it if you have bone disease. For those with osteopenia or osteoporosis, PLEASE do not take this drug. Just a heads' up on that, you can do more research online if you are interested, or ask me, I'll find it. Guest guest
I'm posting to the group in case it might be helpful to others, too. I take 100mg of Topamax every morning (QAM) AND every bedtime (QHS). I occasionally have insomnia, but not consistently enough that I would attribute it to the Topamax. If anything, Topamax is know to cause marked drowsiness and cognitive " dulling " (thus the nickname " Dopamax " ). This is probably why it is prescribed for once a day dosing to be taken at bedtime. The first time I took Topamax a few years ago, it caused SIGNIFICANT cognitive side effects. My neurologist did the very slow taper up, like you have to, and it didn't matter. I was like a complete idiot, and I am a very sharp, intelligent person. It was so severe that I had to quit taking it after several months. I could not function. I had no short-term memory, and I was like a walking zombie. About a year later, I decided to try it again. Same dosing, same taper to start. My husband says he notices some differences in my functioning this time around, but it has not been very noticeable to me, and I've been back on it for close to two years again this time. So, who knows. Now, the past month or so I have all of a sudden had cognitive changes very similar to the first time I was taking it. I plan to talk to my doctor because something is definitely going on. I don't think the medication could be causing it after this long, but the effects are very similar. My brain is like mush. Maybe this is what people describe as " brain fog " ? Hope that helps someone, Beth in CA > (snip) and it even says on my script label " TAKE AT BEDTIME " HE told > me that I should be taking it in the morning, NOT at bedtime, and > that it is the Topamax that is making me have the insomnia...(snip) > I would love to know how those of you on Topamax, take it... my dose > is 100mg QHS(snip) > >
