Does anyone have problems with knee swelling and pain?

I don't have any trouble w/my knee swelling, but my foot swells quite frequently. My doctor told me it was arthritus and to use naproxyn. He wrote me an RX for a high dose, but over the counter Alieve would do the same thing. Works for me.

Tara,

If you knee is swelling, it's an indication that there is something wrong... Try a couple of things... you might try wearing a brace while you exercise, and if there are any moves that really bother your knee, go easy on them. Pay attention to what moves irritate the area,, this might mean doing the work out slower, but your body is worth it. It's not worth it to blow a knee to do it fast... pay special attention to where your knee is in relation to your foot, always talks about not letting your knee go in front of your foot, and it is really important. When your knee is ahead of your foot with your leg bent, it puts a lot of stress on that joint, and for prolonged periods, can do a lot of damage. Also, taking it easy for a few days isn't going to kill you. Again, your body is worth way more than the price you might pay with over use.

Another thing you might do is put some ice on your knee right after you exercise, for about 20 minutes. Never put ice directly on your skin, because you can burn yourself. Also, putting your knee up and resting it for a bit helps to decrease swelling.

As far as NSAIDS (anti-inflammatories) go, I don't reccommend them for prolonged use. They don't really solve any problem, they put a lot of stress on your digestive tract, and can actually cause what's called a pro-inflammatory state in your body which makes it more prone to injury and pain. Taking any pain reliever is like taking the battery out of a fire alarm, it turns off the alarm, but it doesn't put out the fire. Pain is your body's signal that damage is happening or is about to occur, so listen to the pain when you get it. It is your body trying to tell you something. If you are going to take one (OTC or Rx), take it AFTER you work out, so you can still listen to the messages your body is sending you and correct problems before they do too much damage.

Good luck with the knees.

:) Mindi

PS... you asked when I was due... current wisdom says end of Novemeber. I'm starting to get a little energy back, so hopefully by next week I'll be able to start working out again, even if slowly... VERY SLOWLY.

Thank you so much :) I decided to do the basic today since the

advanced has so much floorwork and that is really where is seems to

bother me the most. I'm going to also review the intro video again

and make sure I am doing those kicks right. My husband suggested

icing it too, but he didn't know how long. All great advice, thanks

so much!!

Hi.

I just got on the list yesterday and have been reading the knee emails with concern. I am a sports med chiropractor and don't want to perform "tele-medicine" or in this case, email medicine. But, from my stand point, it sounds like the problem is chondromalaica patella, which is a roughening of the back of the knee cap. THis would explain why kneeling for floor work makes it worse. The best remedies for that are the knee strap, quad strengthening and ice. Most made excellent suggestions. However, I do urge you to have your knee evaluated by a doctor to see if you have something more sinister, like an ACL injury, where you may be causing further damage. It is only prudent. Let me know how it turns out...mz

RE: knee swelling

hi tara - can you wear the knee wrap while you workout? that might give itsome stability and help to withstand the impact.i also wonder if it might help to take an anti-inflammatory (ibuprophen)before working out?i do get knee pain but not from taebo... i get it if i do too much aerobicstepping and/or too many step-ups onto a high bench (with weights). so, itry not to do those activities on consecutive days in order to rest theknee. the best thing that i have found so far to prevent over-use injuryto my knee is to make my workouts really varied. lots of differentactivities, different impact levels, cardio one day... weights the next...at least one rest day in the week.*~*~*~*~*CarolynRE:> Does anyone have problems with knee swelling and pain?---Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).Version: 6.0.624 / Virus Database: 401 - Release Date: 3/15/2004As Deb has said: "Fitness is a journey and it begins with the first step.""This isn't about weight loss, it's about enlightenment" -Visit our new vault site http://taeboon.isportsdot.com/

I did wear the knee wrap when I worked out this morning and I

haven't had any problems all day. Just barely swollen today :) I'm

just going to have to remember to put it on everytime I work out and

ice it afterwards probably. Thanks :)

If it continues, I'd see a doctor just to be sure. I haev an old knee injury

and have to really be careful. I take ibuoprofen daily and

glucosamine/chondroiten with MSM and if I feel any twinges always ice after

working out. I also rotate my cardio and do weights alternating day to give

my knee a rest.
