Hey All:I just joined the group so sorry if I am asking a question that has been asked before.

I just started Advair and have to take Valium to counter the side effects. They keep telling me that the side effects will calm down after a little bit and wanted to see what others have experienced.

Also, how long did it take to fully control your asthma? Thanks much.

If you've been on Advair a while and still having side effects, talk to your doctor. Something isn't right here. You may be hyper sensitive to something in it.To: asthma Sent: Thu, June 23, 2011 10:49:19 PMSubject: Re:

Maybe you have to start at a lower dose for your body to adjust. I always need

to start low as I can be sensitive to some meds. Not sure why you have to cover

up the problem with Valium. Why not get to the source of the problem instead.

Thanks. It's only been four days. Just hoping it will stop at some point.

, I totally agree with you. I asked for a lower dose but the part that makes me shake, the LABA, is 50 on all of the Advair products. For some reason the doctor wanted me to try this and would only consider another drug if I tried for a couple of weeks and it still was a problem. I was already taking the Valium for a stomach issue so we thought we would give it at try.

When we met, he said he thought  this was the best solution given my heart condition. After that it has been follow up calls. You never actually get to talk to the doctor when you call, you just leave messages and the Assistant calls you back. She seemed quite competent though. I live on and island so trying to see specialists is difficult.

Sorry for the rambling, just hoping he is right and for those who have taken it, your experience has been that the side effects go away.

Thanks everyone who has responded.

Hi Kathy,I have to agree with . I associate those types of symptoms with a much higher dose of steroid. The corticosteroid in Advair should not be doing that. I would definitely ask my doc to change the med. There are several out there and they all have small differences. Something else may work without the horrendous side effects.MadelineTo: asthma Sent: Friday, June 24, 2011 6:52 AMSubject: Re: Advair

Thanks Madeline - it isn't the corticosteroid that is causing it, is the LABA, long acting beta antagonist.  The LABA is  more like your rescue inhaler. I was on 600 mcg's of corticosteroids before Advair with no problem but also no results.

Also are you taking the disc form or the metered dose inhaler HFA form? There might be a difference in the two b/c one uses a propellent and the other does not. Also, what is the dose you are on....may be that it is too much for you. Either way you might want to ask your doc about looking into other options if you need valium to quell the side effects.

When my doc wanted to put me on Advair I told him it didn't agree with

me because I had used an inhaler with steroids before and was speaking

from experience so he gave me the lowest possible dosage. (115/21) I

used it for a while then it quit working so I stopped taking it. Then

I spent a week in the hospital while they were doing tests and I think

it was because I stopped the Advair without tapering down.

Jenn - sounds like they had a nice way to ease you into it. Glad to hear the side effects stopped.

I took serevent, the LABA in Seretide as a separate inhaler alongside Qvar for a year befire being put onto Seretide. It made me feel like my heart was racing at times for a few weeks, which is one of the listed side effect, and after a while once my body was used to it it stopped

I don't know if it makes any difference here with what you are talking about. But, when I first started taking my inhalers for asthma, I found out I was inhaling too hard and fast. You are sensitive to that LABA. I haven't had problems with it. If it's still that bad and you've been on it a few days, tell your doctor no more. To: asthma Sent: Fri, June 24, 2011 4:31:45 PMSubject: Re: Advair

Everyone has been so great. I really appreciate your suggestions.Ann - I'm taking the metered dose which I think would give me less? Not sure. I'm on the 500/50 which is actually lower than I was on before. I was on Qvar HFA 40 twice in the am and pm and Flovent HFA 220 twice in the am and pm. plus Singular. No side effects. The 50 level doesn't change in Advair, I wish it did, I think I need a lower dose on that part.

Thanks Wollow. I don't think that is the issues. I believe it is the actual medication. I've been on asthma medication before so am pretty familiar with hot to use it and with the corticosteroids I had a spacer which made it very easy.

Thanks for the thought.

Willow - I wanted to let you know that I thought a lot about your suggestion yesterday.  I thought about what I was doing vs. your experience and decided to try your approach. My body responded positively. I'd been doing it with the spacers for so long I forgot how to inhale slowly without one.

I want to apologize for dismissing your suggestion so quickly and to thank you for offering the it.

I wonder how much medicine I was missing because no one said to inhale twice?Oh well. Now I know.

Thanks every one.

I have found that using a spacer makes a huge difference for me.  It also has the added benefit of less thrush and less of that disgusting bitter taste from the albuterol.  I take two or three full deep calm measured breaths then hole the spacer to my mouth with the inhaler inserted.  One puff, inhale.  Wait fifteen to thirty seconds and inhale again.  Then repeat for the second puff.  Exceptional.

Well I inhale once, and keep my mouth shut as long as I can,  not easy for me, LOL.   Then I breathe out for a little while, and then go back and take the second inhalation.  I never counted, just waited a while maybe a minute or two, and then the second inhalation.

1. Do you then breathe out through your nose between the two inhalations?

2. My doctor actually told me it didn't make any difference whether you waited the full minute between puffs or not. He also illustrated a technique where he held the mouthpiece a couple of inches away from his open mouth, released the puff into the air, and then inhaled via mouth. I've never tried either suggestion. I faithfully count the 10 seconds of holding the inhalation, and then boringly up to the 60 seconds between puffs, but sometimes on the 60-second count I get to thinking about something else and forget whether I'm still in the 30s or have got to the 40s, etc. lol

Advair

I faithfully count the 10 seconds of holding the inhalation, and then boringly up to the 60 seconds between puffs, but sometimes on the 60-second count I get to thinking about something else and forget whether I'm still in the 30s or have got to the 40s, etc. lol

Being a newbie, I already agree. I've been trying to find a place like this for a while. I'm very glad to have found you.

I was thinking about taking a second inhalation on the same puff - to get

whatever might remain in the spacer. If you breathed out through your mouth,

you'd be exhaling into the spacer. Would that matter?

They keep telling me that the side effects will calm down after a little bit and

wanted to see what others have experienced.

When I first started on treatment I wasn't able to use an albuterol inhaler at

all, and that was back when it had the now outlawed propellant. The instant the

stuff splatted on the back of my throat, I'd have a coughing fit and cough out

whatever of the med I might have inhaled. My then primary doc was who had

prescribed it, and I had a 6-month wait before I could get in to be seen by a

pulmonologist. (We have a shortage of pulmos here.) He immediately had me

start using it with a spacer, and that way I could actually benefit from the

med.

Yes ,I have noticed that sometimes I will cough after inhaling my meds. Not very often, I think it is when I am in a hurry, and do not inhale it right. Yesterday that happened. So I need to slow down and take more time, I don't know why I should be in a hurry, I am retired. LOL>To: asthma Sent: Tue,
