Guest guest
Hi Carol, Jim is very lucky that he has a dentist that has a parent with dementia and understands completely. Jim goes every 3 months for teeth cleaning. He doesn't always cooperate for me to open his mouth, so I can brush inside, but he will for the dentist. I am glad he still cooperates for the dentist, because he sometimes holds food in his mouth and for long periods that can get yucky and cause some problems. The dentist is very good with him. The nh provides a dentsist, but I don't trust that dentist and they can only have so much equipment with them at the nh. As long as Jim can get in a car and I can drive him to his own dentist, I will take him. At the nh, it is urgent to get the teeth brushed, because they don't always brush the patients teeth at the nh. Most of them they put to bed after eating dinner without brushing their teeth. Jim has his own teeth and so do some others. I am always there in the evening to make sure Jim's teeth get brushed before bedtime. So many health problems can be caused by bad teeth. The ones with dentures the CNA will take out and put in a glass to clean, but they do not stop to bush teeth. It is nice to have a dentist in the family and that Millie had the proper dental care for her. Your son will be like Jim's dentist and know how to work on the teeth of a person with dementia and the family of that person will be very grateful for the understanding, as I am with Jim's dentist. I hope you are getting some well deserved rest now......................Jan Re: any novocaine contraindications? My son, a dentist, did a lot of work on his grandmother. Her mental capabilities made some things very difficult. the last month of her life she did not even use her dentures. Make sure the dentist understands the mental aspects of your patient. An appointment can be very trying if the patient will not follow directions. Watch for dentist stress as well. Our treatment was free, but our dentist paid an extreme emotional price every time he worked on Millie.
