Has anyone ever had or considered having a lung biopsy? If so, please let me know your thoughts on the pros and cons or your experience with a lung biopsy. Thanks, Cassie

Hi Cassie,

Do you know why you’re recommended a biopsy? CT scans show a fair bit, and aren’t invasive.

A biopsy isn’t surgery but is still an invasive procedure, and most infx us brochies get are ‘nocosomial’ ei pathogens of hospitals which have become resistant to just about anything and everything, eg Pseudomonas aeruginosa (if you don’t have already, is one of the worst, so AVOID at all costs!, Influenza haemoph...(something!), Staph, etc etc...

There’s quite a bit on web-sites, try googling <nocosomial bronchiectasis>, would be worth being informed before you decide, and may help w/ giving you good questions to ask your doc.,

Good luck,

joy

Cassie,

I don't have any lasting effects from this needle biopsy. Collapsed lung is medically a pneumonthorax. In my case there was a slow leakage from the needle which caused a partial collapse. A slow leakage of air from my lung into my pleural cavity. I had to have a tube placed into my lung until my lung built back up, Simple explanation. It is more complicated but I didn't suffer one bit. It required a 2 day stay in the hospital. Here is a site about collapsed lung/pneumothorax:

Lung biopsy

Hi Joy and ,

Thank you both for your response. I've seen quite a few doctors for my pulmonary problem. The doctors seem to have a debate on what my CT shows. While one doctor believes I have bronchiolitis (inflammation of the bronchioles), the other believes I have bronchiolectasis (bronchiectasis of the smaller airways).

All the doctors agree that my symptoms sound like bronchiectasis (ie, chronic daily yellow sputum since severe bilateral pneumonia several years ago). However, since the smaller airways are harder to see on CT, any bronchiectasis in this area would also be more difficult to see. That is why I'm considering a lung biopsy -- to confirm my diagnosis and hence, treatment (if there's any possible way of reversing what could be somewhat mild bronchiolectasis, etc, I'd want to do it sooner rather than later!)

, were you able to fully recuperate from your biopsy? What does it mean that your lung "collapsed" and was it painful? Any long-lasting side effects/other complications from the biopsy? The doctor plans to do it laparoscopically first, and only if necessary, open me up later.

I'm really debating whether to have this done so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Good to hear from you both,

Cassie
