Thickening of the bowel in an elderly woman

Hi All

I've had an enquiry from a prospective patient who wants to know if I

can help the above condition, diagnosed following severe pain by CAT

scan. She has been offered an operation to correct the condition but is

very reluctant as is aware of the risks a major operation at her age

entails.

Has anybody treated thickening of the bowel successfully? I would be

very grateful for your feedback. I'm sure I could improve the condition

of her bowel wall, but not so sure to what degree, and don't want to

discourage surgery if this is the best option to prevent future obstruction.

thanks

" Thickening of the bowel " is just too vague - is it muscular, mucosal, fibrotic

or what?? What is causing the severe pain - is it a spasmodic or inflammatory or

neurogenic type of pain? Bowel movements? Did you find anything on examining

abdo?

I'm reposting this as she will be phoning again soon, and some shared

experience would be much appreciated.

Any thoughts? anyone?

It was a telephone enquiry, so I haven't examined her yet. Her consultant

had originally thought there had been a " kink " (presumably torsion?) but

on performing a CAT scan had diagnosed a regional thickening of the

bowel wall, reducing the lumen as a result of " wear and tear " . This was

located mid way up the ascending colon. She has no pain at present and

her bowel movements are normal, but has been advised she needs an operation.

I am interested to know if anybody has treated a patient whose bowel

wall has developed a local area of thickening and succesfully improved

the calibre of the wall.
