I was only given the diskus option when I was put on advair. It works well and I admit that I much prefer it to the double dose of flovent hfa. In fact, since I was put on advair, I haven't been to the ER for my asthma, whereas I used to go 2x/year. ~~PATo: asthma Sent: Thu, June 2, 2011 5:05:01 PMSubject: question about advair

hello group,

hope everyone is feeling okay.

my question is this . . . for the people who are taking advair . . . if you had a choice to use an hfa or the diskus which would you choose?

I could take the 250/50 diskus one puff twice a day or the hfa 115/21 2 puffs twice a day.

Thanks

Ive never used the HFA form...but the diskus form is pretty simple. I would probably stay with the diskus to be honest. In my opinion, the dry powder is less dependent on technique as are the hfa inhalers.

I have used both and I prefer the HFA but I used one puff twice a day.

But it stopped working and I still have 75 puffs left. It used to be

a nice substitute for my albuterol inhalers but quit working. I have

stopped using it.

Several days after stopping it I had severe breathing problems and

spent 7 days in the hospital.

I take seretide, which is the name used in the rest of the world for what you call advair. I have the spray version as I don't like powder inhalers. I was also advised by the nurse to stick to inhalers in canisters rather than powder as I go camping a lot, and the canisters are less likely to be damaged by being stored in damp conditionsJennTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! I use symbicort inhaler, and spiriva with the little capsule you crack and then breathe in, and If I miss a dose, I know it right away. I also use albuterol inhaler for emergencies. I have been worried about the getting sick if I forget to take them. It seems as if my lungs are addicted to the meds? To: asthma Sent: Fri, June 3, 2011 11:08:51 AMSubject: Re: question about advair

Once, when people were discussing the 'risks' of it before, I googled 'warnings' and 'advair', and 'warnings' and 'seretide'. There were far fewer hits for the second, despite the fact that seretide is the name used globally, so far more people using it than the name advair, which only you lot use.http://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/3762/PIL/ This link takes you to the page where you can see the insert that comes with seretide over here - how does it compare? There are certainly no warnings on thereJennTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! Don't brand me, don't classify me, don't tell me what to wear. I'll be who I want to be, and I'm proud to be me.

I like to research medications before I take them also.  I think I read the same warning 7 yrs. ago. I recently started taking advair.  I read the advair diskus warning 2 days ago in the advair webpage. It seems like that warning keeps popping up.

About 7 years ago when I was first diagnosed with asthma, I used the purple diskus, I didn't like the warnings either, so I asked to use something else.  Went through that pink and white twisthaler, I forget what if was called, a few different things.  Am worried about what I take now, going to do some more searching on the web and get all of the info I can before I talk to my pulmo.

I have taken Advair before and stopped without problems, but we stepped down my dose vs stopping cold turkey. Im back on it 5 yrs later because I live in a different environment that triggers my asthma and I need the controller med. Its a possibility that your asthma could worsen, but that does not necessarily happen with everyone.

A warning doesnt mean it will happen....just that there is a chance of it happening. The FDA forced the makers of Advair to put that warning out, just like there is a warning about possible suicidal tendencies with Singulair. They never really substantiated that Singulair increases suicidal tendencies, but there were enough complaints out there that the FDA said they needed to warn people.

In the US, there are several laws that require certain information to be included in our drugs...we have some of the strictest regulations in the world...which is one reason that it is also supposed to be illegal to import medications from other countries. This can be a good and a bad thing...bad in that sometimes people are afraid to take medicine that they might need but good because if there is a pattern of specific adverse reactions the FDA can take action.

It depends on how many warnings, and how strong they are whether I choose to take it or not. I try to be as informed as I can. My mother whom is 80 years old doesn't understand all of this stuff, so try to tech her as much as I can, so she can make an informed decision. To: asthma Sent: Fri, June 3, 2011 10:01:01

What's illegal is to REimport meds from other countries for personal use. There

are stiff fines for doing so. US pharmaceutical houses openly sell meds to

other countries that have universal insurance coverage including drug coverage.

Those countries negotiate to buy meds for their residents at lower prices than

we are charged for them here. So the law exists to prevent Americans from

buying their American drugs cheaper by getting them from abroad.

It's perfectly legal, though the FDA warns against it, to import meds from other

countries that are not made here and not available here and are therefore not

under the scrutiny of the FDA.

I don't know what the rules are here. I have heard of someone with MS getting his medication sent in from America as it was something not licenced over here so not somethig he could get on prescription. There are some medications which are not covered by the NHS, so you have to pay full price - that can often be a postcode lottery as some areas will pay and some won't. My seretide would be £30ish if I had to pay - I once tried to get it without a prescription after I forgot to take my inhaler with me when I went away, and that's what they were trying to charge me. I refused to pay and went and got an emergency doctors appointment instead so I could get a prescription and just pay the £7-10 charge instead. What happens if you go to the pharmacy but then don't have the money to pay? I once went to pick up a

prescription but then realised I'd forgotten my purse when I went to pay. I did find £20 in my bag in the end, but they said they would have let me have the inhaler anyway, as there are certain medications they cannot not let you have - asthma medications come under that since it could be a matter of life and deathJennTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! I used to go to a pharmacy that would give me some of my meds to tide me over till I could go and get the money, or call my Dr. to find out what was going on with my insurance, but, not to many will do that today. They all think everyone is a criminal until proven otherwise. LOL.To: asthma Sent: Sat,

Drugstores used to do that where I live. That was back when we still had some

small independent ones where the clerks knew you. Those little stores have just

about all been crowded out now by the big chains that buy up meds in huge

quantities, and the clerks there are different almost every time you go in and

absolutely refuse to give you 3 or 4 pills to tide you over, even for a long

holiday weekend until your doctor can okay your refill.

That can be really dangerous in other situations besides asthma, for example if

it's a blood pressure medicine or something like prednisone that you can't quit

abruptly but need to taper off of.

This drugstore I use, Walgreens, when I first moved here they had the same pharmacist, and assistant for about 3 years, and they knew me by name, it was very nice, that, but they have changed and now only the assistant knows me, if she is there on the day that I go in. They are always nice to me though, just different people now.To: asthma Sent: Sat, June 4, 2011 1:12:16 PMSubject: Re: question about advair

I think, I am not sure, the advair thing might apply to people of certain races more likely.

Ive never used the HFA form...but the diskus form is pretty simple. I would probably stay with the diskus to be honest. In my opinion, the dry powder is less dependent on technique as are the hfa inhalers.

question about advair

hello group,

hope everyone is feeling okay.

my question is this . . . for the people who are taking advair . . . if you had a choice to use an hfa or the diskus which would you choose?

I could take the 250/50 diskus one puff twice a day or the hfa 115/21 2 puffs twice a day.

Thanks

Never thought about it, but, it makes sense different genetics with different races. To: asthma Sent: Sat, June 4, 2011 5:18:07 PMSubject: Re: question about advair

Yes - there are differences. I know certainly with organ and blood donation it can make a difference. There have been campaigns here for those from non-white backgrounds to sign upJennTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! Don't brand me, don't classify me, don't tell me what to wear. Most drug manufacturers have branches in other countries and can get

around that stipulation very easily.
