Guest guest
Stephania tetandra is currently banned for use in the UK as it shares the same pinyin name " Fang Ji " with a Chinese herb of the aristolochia species. This led to a mass poisoning of women in Belgium in the early 90s. From: jeanrdow@... Guest guest
Jean You can purchase it here through Chinese herb distributors. I buy it through a company called Mayway in California. Guest guest
a similar disaster has recently occurred in the UK where a Chinese herb called " mu tong " - a name which can also represent three herbs one of which is also an aristolochia was prescribed to a woman that led to severe damage of the patient's kidneys and cancer. You may recall that this case was tried in the Old a few months ago and sadly led to widespread media warnings about the dangers of herbal medicine. Mu tong is banned under the same UK order as that banning all herbs with the epithet fang ji including Stephania. If you tried to buy Stephania from Mayway UK they would tell you about the ban and refuse to supply but buying abroad (even from a sister company) doesn't tell you that this herb is banned as I believe these herbs are still available in the USA. This is obviously a problem if purchasing herbs from a foreign supplier or over the internet. From: jeanrdow@... Guest guest
I'm from the US - and have been using Stephania from Mayway in a tea blend for Lyme pts. for a good 8 months now. I appreciate the information - was aware of the aristolochia mix-up. Would love to find a grower who would take on this herb. Do you know if Stephania japonica is used in the same way as the tetrandra? BTW, the tea blend has been v. helpful- an adapted Buhner protocol: Polygonatum cuspidatum, Smilax ornata, Ceonanthus, Cats claw and Stephania-- Artemesia annua add. for Babesia (co-infection) Vermont USA To: ukherbal-list From: ehpa@... Guest guest
(or anyone else who might know) I'm wondering what you would replace Stephania tetrandra with, be it TCM herb or otherwise? What would do the same energetically as Stephania? I would like to not order my herb from China if possible and perhaps use something more local. Any thoughts? And thanks VT_USA__ _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy think 9 to 5 is a cute idea. Guest guest
Dear , Stephania is used as an anti-inflammatory and to treat oedema and swelling especially in the legs. It is particularly used for arthritis. I guess if you were to substitute you would need a western herb that had many of these actions. I'll leave you to decide which is best! Guest guest
, Following 's explanation of how Stephania is used my initial thoughts on alternative indigenous herbs were parsley root or celery seed although others might have better ideas. a
