Guest guest
Give her adaptogens J Fidler, MCPP, (RH) AHG Herbalist ________________________________ To: ukherbal-list Sent: Fri, July 16, 2010 7:51:41 AM Subject: hot flushes Hi all, I have a patient, 48 years old, how came to see me for menopausal symptoms - mostly hot flushes and low energy. She had a partial hysterectomy aged 34, and her menopasue started aged 46. She also has a benign growth on her thyroid. Needle aspiration showed a white fluid, and some solid matter. Initially I treated her with a 'standard' hormonal menopausal mix (Cimicifuga, Leonurus, Vitex et al), which had no effect, so presumed that her hot flushes were thyroid-induced. I gave her the following Gingko, Leonurus, Avena, Fucus, Valeriana, Iris versicolour, which worked a treat. 6 months later we reduced her dose down to 5ml OID, and that worked well to keep the flushes at bay. She remained at that dose for 6 months without problem, but now her hot flushes have retuned and increasing the dose to 7.5ml BID hasn't worked, nor has tha addition of Asparagus racemosa, nor Black cohosh & dong quai. Also although I didn't manage to reduce the growth on her thyroid, it became significantly less bothersome - ie she is now able to sleep lying down, whereas before she had to sleep propped up. Any thoughts and guidance much appreciated. Sara Southgate BSc., ND, Dip Herb, MURHP
Guest guest
I always see they thyroid taking over when the adrenals are taxed - I suppose if her thyroid is improving her adrenals might be kicking back in again. I'd be tempted to give lots of adrenal adaptogen herbs - eluthro, centella, withania. And cool her liver with bitters ++++ Best Wishes and Kind Regards, Zoe Hawes Medical Herbalist MNIMH RGN Dip Phyt. www.herbaljournal.co.uk www.zoehawes.co.uk Bath 01761 439 920 > Hi all, >
Guest guest
DEar Sara, This is going to sound very simplistic but I had patient with benign thyroid growth which was causing sufficient disruption for surgergy to be fairly imminent. With nothing to lose we tried cabbage leaves, green outside leaves of savoy cabbage , replenished frequently and with time limit of the planned surgergy. The growth went, was checked by surgeon - pre- operative and declared to no longer need the surgery. There was also resolution of the symptoms being caused by the growth. Worth a try.
