I have been taking them for going on four years now. Personally I don't think I have any side effects from them except maybe a little restlessness and some minor thrush here and there. However, for a good but of that same time frame I have been on prednisone a well. I know there are a multitude of side effects from that. It would be possible that I am having some side effects that I automatically attribute to the prednisone.Sent via DROID on Verizon Wireless Taking inhaled-steroids for long peroids of time Just wondering if you post how long you have been on inhaled-steroids. And if you think they have caused any problems (or you suspect). I am curious as to what happens after long term use. Thanks,Lynne

I've been on daily inhaled corticosteroids for a little over 10 years. The only

side effect I notice is bruising at the least bump. Most of the time I can't

even remember what I bumped into, or what bumped into me.

It takes at least a week for each new purple place to fade, and by then I've

already got several new ones in various stages of fading. Most of the time my

arms and legs are a site to behold - ugly with purple areas. I look like I'm in

a bad domestic abuse situation. lol It can't be helped, I guess. I need to

stay on the medication for COPD. My asthma is only a very minor problem.

I bruise really easily too - I don't know how much it is to do with the steroid inhaler. Oddly enough, I bruise easier the further down my body I get. I get bruises from the slightest little knocks on my legs, and I've had some really quite impressive bruises and have no idea where they are from. (Currently sporting a nice one on my lower back from falling out of a grass sledge!)Yet I walked into a low roof the other week, smacked my head and fell over backwards from the shock of it, and it didn't bruise at all.JenTha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! I used to bruise easily (not because of steroids because I wasn't

taking them) and then I started taking 1000 mg. Vitamin C every day

and I never bruise any more even with steroids.

I'd get that checked into. It doesn't sound like a side effect of inhaled asthma and allergy steroids.

I don't get them on my face either, but I sure do on both legs and arms - hands

and feet, too.

It is, according to my pulmonologist. He says all his patients on inhaled

steroid get the purple spots, and it's typical that they have no idea how most

of them happened.

Yep..I get them too. My right arm looks like I got into a major argument with something. I actually have 2 bruises adjacent to each other. Getting them hurt...but they are way larger than they need to be for what I did...I walked into a counter top edge and yesterday a door handle hit my arm.

Yep from here too. Mine never actually feel like bruises. They only look like

them. I get oodles of them just from my dog's very roughneck idea of showing

affection. I have a beaut right now where one of her hook-y front dew claws

caught me on the inside of my arm while I was giving her " love pats " the other

day. Sigh.

About the Vitamin C that someone suggested for them. My thyroid doc suggested

that too - particularly Vitamin C from bioflavonoids. He said that can

strengthen capillary walls and help prevent the bleeding under the skin that

causes the " bruises " . I should take him up on that suggestion and see if it

helps.

Sounds familiar. I hate it when I get those bruises. I can't figure it out. Sometimes I bruise and other times I don'.

The effect seems to be dose dependent.

Another vitamin you might look into is Rutin. My cat has a vascular problem with her lymph vessels and the vet prescribed this to her with lasix. Shes outlived her life expectancy of not making it over 3yrs...she will be 8 this year and she was 3 when it happened.

Rutin is a plant pigment (flavonoid) that is found in certain fruits and vegetables. Rutin is used to make medicine. The major sources of rutin for medical use include buckwheat, Japanese pagoda tree, and Eucalyptus macrorhyncha. Other sources of rutin include the leaves of several species of eucalyptus, lime tree flowers, elder flowers, hawthorn leaves and flowers, rue, St. 's Wort, Ginkgo biloba, apples, and other fruits and vegetables.

Some people believe that rutin can strengthen blood vessels, so they use it for varicose veins, internal bleeding, hemorrhoids, and to prevent strokes due to broken veins or arteries (hemorrhagic strokes). Rutin is also used to prevent a side effect ofcancer treatment called mucositis. This is a painful condition marked by swelling and ulcer formation in the mouth or lining of the digestive tract.

In combination with the proteins trypsin and bromelain, rutin is also used forosteoarthritis.

Possibly Effective for:

Osteoarthritis when taken in combination with trypsin and bromelain. This combination seems to be about as effective as the medicationdiclofenac(Voltaren) in relieving pain and improving knee function in people with osteoarthritis.

Insufficient Evidence for:

Blood vessel disease.Varicose veins.Prevention of mouth ulcers associated with cancer treatments.Bleeding.Hemorrhoids.More evidence is needed to rate the effectiveness of rutin for these uses.

Rutin is LIKELY SAFE when used in food amounts and POSSIBLY SAFE when used appropriately in medicinal amounts for a short period of time. It can cause some side effects including headache, flushing, rashes, or stomach upset.

Special Precautions & Warnings:Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of rutin during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

I got this info off http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-270-RUTIN.aspx?activeIngredientId=270 & activeIngredientName=RUTIN

All I can say about it is that for my cat, she has not had major fluid leakage since she started taking it..when her problem was discovered, she had a full cup of fluid in her chest cavity. It may or may not work for the bruising..and of course, you should always get your doc's approval first.

Interesting that the list of side effects includes skin fragility. I have that,

too.

I had both the bruises and increasingly fragile skin during the years when I

took only a half-dose of Symbicort (one puff twice daily). A little over a year

ago I had to increase to the full dose. I can't really decide whether it's

become worse since then or not. I sure hate it, in any case. I'm stuck though,

because Symbicort helps my breathing better than any other med I've tried.
