Guest guest
From MedPage Today (Univ of Penn. med school medical news pub) Lab Notes feature (March 25, 2011): Herbs Ease Asthma A compound of three herbs, including licorice, appears to provide more persistent asthma relief than the corticosteroid dexamethasone, researchers reported at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology meeting in San Francisco. Mice with induced asthma were randomized to treatment with the Chinese herbal mix or to dexamethasone and water. Airway inflammation was reduced similarly with both treatments compared with controls, but eight weeks after the treatment, the herbal-treated group still showed suppression of airway inflammation, which was significantly better than seen in both other groups. Airway hyper-reactivity also was reduced at eight weeks compared with the other groups. The researchers suggested that the herbs " may be preferable to steroid for asthma, " but noted that further study is needed to determine if they would work as well in asthma patients as in mice. ------------------------------------------ Looks promising. Hopefully, further study will confirm the efficacy of these herbs in treating asthma. in CT
Guest guest
I wonder what the other herbs were beside licorice? I use licorice root extract to treat canker sores and it works miracles! Guest guest
This is interesting . I had heard about the licorice. I actually took licorice caplets for a while, but I didn't notice any real difference. I wonder if it is just more effective in conjuction with the other herbs. I would sure like to know what the other two are. Guest guest
The info I posted is all there was on MedPage Today, so I did a quick search for " Chinese herbs asthma " and discovered there are four types of asthma as diagnosed in Chinese medicine. Each type corresponds to a different organ and each of those four types require different Chinese herbs. So, I can't determine which two of the 12 or so herbs, along with licorice, might be in the test treatment. Just did another search and found this research has been going on for a few years. I don't have time at the moment to keep refining the search but you might find some more info on the particular Chinese herbs that relieve asthma symptoms by searching this term: " American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Chinese herbs asthma " . A large number of relevant pages came up in Google. Please post if you find out anything of interest. Thanks! in CT > > This is interesting . I had heard about the licorice. I actually took > licorice caplets for a while, but I didn't notice any real difference. I wonder > if it is just more effective in conjuction with the other herbs. I would sure > like to know what the other two are. > > Madeline > > > > > ________________________________ > > To: asthma > Sent: Sun, April 17, 2011 5:23:48 PM > Subject: Herbs Ease Asthma > >  > From MedPage Today (Univ of Penn. med school medical news pub) Lab Notes feature > (March 25, 2011): > > Herbs Ease Asthma > > A compound of three herbs, including licorice, appears to provide more > persistent asthma relief than the corticosteroid dexamethasone, researchers > reported at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology meeting in San > Francisco. > > Mice with induced asthma were randomized to treatment with the Chinese herbal > mix or to dexamethasone and water.
