Guest guest
Hi, Jean: Visit VitaminDCouncil.org. Dr. Cannell founded the Vitamin D Council to provide accurate information on vitamin D. I believe there is information on that site concerning calcium, as well, because calcium and vitamin D are needed for bone health. in CT > > Hi Everyone. for those of you on prednisone a lot do you take calcium and (or) vit. d? and how much of each? > > my dd has to go for dexa scan because they found a schmorl node(not sure if selled right) and also a compression fracture..she is only 19(oops just turn 20)... > > she takes calcium and vit d but I am wondering if she should take more. thanks...I am going to post this question with another group in case you are on both.. jean >
Guest guest
You know, your doctor can run a simple blood test to check vitamin D level. It should be atleast 30. Guest guest
Dividing your calcium supplement into two doses is more effective than taking it all at once. We need calcium for proper muscle function, as well as bone rebuilding. The bone process happens in our sleep, so including a dose of Calcium with dinner really can be an easy way to improve bone density, along with exercises that pull muscles against bones to stimulate more bone growth. Vitamin D production from sun exposure is less efficient as we get older. I get horrible rashes and stuff from the sun so use a high SPF sunscreen most of the year. My rheumatologist gives me a prescription for 50,000 iu's to take once a week. When my g.i. tract is working properly, my Vit. D levels go from the low 30's to the upper 60's. I certainly feel much better when my levels are higher. Having IBS makes absorption more difficult, so I've finally learned that it's a waste of the supplement to even take them when I'm having the diarrhea symptoms of IBS. Even if I take them, I don't get over 36 under those circumstances.
